At the time this movie was released NYC was going through a major financial crises. In 76 president Gerald Ford told the mayor to 'drop dead' on his request for a bailout. In this movie, the mayor talking of the city being too broke to pay the hostages was real.
At the time New York was essentially broke. Soon after this movie was made they asked the federal government for money to bail them out, and were turned down. They didn't have enough money to pay essential city employees like police and firemen. AT&T started threatening to turn off all city phone service.
Convincing a bank to give them $1 million (Roughly $7.5 million today) in cash wouldn't have been easy.
One of my favorite NYC movies. Great ending!
Mine too. It's like a 70s Die Hard.
The best ending, ever.
When I saw this in a theater (Milwaukee), soon after it was released, and the last scene happened, the whole theater let out a huge scream of laughter. It was wonderful.
finally someone is watching the old movies.😎
So glad to see you react to this, much better than the remake.
I walked out of the theater with y gf halfway thru. Awful movie, never should have remade it.
Amen. The reMake is garbage
One of the great American films of its decade. When I first watched it, I had not expected so many genuine laughs.
One of the best endings of all time.
This is better than the remake. This movie is not exactly accurate with how the subway works, but it's close enough that it doesn't ruin the movie for me like some other subway movies. I was a subway motorman for 27 years, there are a lot of similarities between the employee characters and the employees that work for the subways. Some are really high strung like they own the trains, and some are just there for a paycheck and pension. I started my career in 1988 and saw this movie when it first came out in the theaters. I have seen it a few times after I worked there too. It's a good movie and your reaction was also very good.
Great movie. Robert Shaw, superb actor, and one of the best bond villains.
Classic movie. I was 8 yrs. old and still remember it. I watch it when I find it. Great acting, story and old N.Y City scenery. Thanks for reacting. Great job. The escape plan was well thought out though.
enjoyed your reaction 👍☺
Walter Matthaw has that great tracking hound-dog face so his ending shot is just perfect. Great 1970s NYC crime move, will never be topped by any pathetic remake. Others you should watch: The French Connection, The 7 Ups, Serpico.
Interesting that 3 characters in this film would go on to co-star in or appear in Tim Allen's Home Improvement and Last Man Standing
Classic movie
Larissa, it's New York & it was a different time period.
Also, you're the first reactor I've seen reacting to this movie. Awesome choice 👍
And extra points to you for choosing the original version & not the remake 🙂👍
Great pick!!! Of all the great 1970s NYC films, and there's so many. this is the best.
Great reaction. I read this book in high school in the 80s, and saw the movie a few years later. The mid 70s were a great time for Robert Shaw (Mr Blue), between The Sting (1973), this movie (1974), and Jaws (1975). I always liked Walter Matthau (Garber). A couple other great movies with him are The Odd Couple (1968) and Grumpy Old Men (1993).
Top 5 favorite film!
Fantastic Flick!!!! The reMake doesn't hold a candle to this. Do more Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw movies
Some great actors in this one. Walter Matthau (Lt. Garber), Martin Balsam (Mr. Green), and Robert Shaw (Mr. Blue) have all been in a lot of really good movies. Jerry Stiller (Lt. Patrone) was Ben Stiller's father.
If you like gritty crime dramas like this one, please consider watching "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975).
@@Jeff_Lichtman Ben Stiller's father.
@@Madbandit77 Oops! You're right. Thanks for catching it. I'll fix it.
The kidnappers (3out of 4)
The Brit - Robert Shaw (Jaws)
The Sneezer - Martin Balsam (Psycho, 12 Angry Men)
The Trigger Happy - Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman)
The fourth is Wilson from the show Home Improvement.
Maybe, but Hector Elizondo is best known for his role in one episode of American Dad 🙂

You can't tell all the white men apart. Gee, that's not racist.
Classic movie. Remake was garbage.
There were actually 2 remakes....both of which were bad.
@@Shadowman4710 I dont count a television show as a remake.
