- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made a sharp remark on criticism over India's oil trade with Russia. Jaishankar defended India's decision to look for 'good deals' for its energy requirement amid volatility in the market. He also said that there is a 'campaign' against India for buying Russian oil at a discounted rate. The EAM Jaishankar was speaking at an event organised by the Indian Council for World Affairs, where he held a discussion with visiting UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. Truss said, 'India is a sovereign nation, I am not gonna tell India what to do.' Watch!

The United States just increased their purchase of Russian oil by 40% in the last 2 days AND the United States has exempted Russian uranium sales to the United States from the sanctions to prevent a spike in electricity prices. Now Japan has refused to put sanctions on their joint venture with Russia in the Sakhalin peninsula for a oil and gas project. The sanctions have utterly failed. Russia is offering India a HUGE 40% discount ($61/barrel) and India can pay for it using Rupees.

Neither can the west dictate India’s foreign policy nor can Russia buy it with oil. Indian foreign policy is as per its own interests and perfectly neutral.

The hypocrisy is nothing new. When India did Pokhran II tests, USA threatened (and later implemented) numerous sanctions on India for the 5 tests whereas they had till then done over 1000.
Mr.Jaishankar spoke very softly against hypocritical policies of Europe and UK. Had it been China they would have been extremely vocal about their dual nature.
