Dances With Wolves and The Searchers are wonderful Westerns but I still believe this to be the greatest Western ever made. Also the way that evil is shown to be in the ordinary, personified by the Jack Parlance character. He is the gaunt bringer of death. Even the dog senses this as it slinks away.

I agree that Wilson is a bad lot, though more amoral than evil. In a lawless time and place, he killed for money - but only after provoking his target into a fight. Actually, I thought "old man" Ryker wasn't evil, or even thoroughly bad. He did try to buy out the "squatters" and may even have had a case for feeling that, notwithstanding the Law, his hard-won cattle-grazing lands were being whittled away.

@@HartmutJagerArt It’s about standing up for yourself. It’s about protecting family and making a future for them. The gun was and is a tool. A means to protect yourself and it is only as good as the person who uses it. Watch this picture from beginning to end and place yourself in the shoes of these farmers. Would you stand lost in apathy while everything you worked for burned? Would you allow your family to be harmed?
I invite you to consider such things before passing judgement like that.
