I love how Jessica and Rasheed have their own little party going on in the background the whole time. From making food to doing yoga to jumping rope, it's hilarious 😂
This is actually helping to learn, just like fidgeting or drawing in class. I don't remember the exact word for it, but i know there is such a concept.
sir, may I just applaud your creativity. What I mean by that is nobody is making videos like you are. You have like a certain signature style, with the backgrounds, focus, and style of presentation. Greetings from Latvia and turpini būt lielisks. Peace
This format needs to be a regular thing. Intermediate/advanced techniques taught as if they’re rudimentary. Slap bass has always been intimidating for me to try and learn, until now.
I'm not sure why I'm watching this video, I'm already pretty advanced with slap bass. Maybe it's just because I learned to slap from Rob in the beginning with his 8 string slap 101. It's kind of nostalgic watching a new video of you teaching things that I learned from you in the past. I like it!
I'm the opposite. I'm not sure why I'm watching this video; I hardly know the difference between a bass and a guitar. But, who knows, maybe the bass is what lies ahead for me.
I bet there are a bunch of bass players who already know how to slap E string and what not but didn't skip the basic sections of the video because its just so fun and educational Great Job, Rob
The out of focus distraction is a genius way to keep viewer engagement on a boring tutorial video very few would actually watch. You still get detail across and it’s funny. My favorite was the Bob Ross painting.
Rob, even after watching your videos for so many years, you never cease to amaze me. I remember watching your first slap video for the first time, it was probably the best video on your channel. Well Rob, you've done it again. This video was honestly amazing and I loved all the little skits that you guys organized in the background. I remember in your first slap video you guys were so excited that you finally got a good take you can use... as a hobby guitar player, I can relate to that feeling. The amount of work that goes into video production makes the output seem so small, and I don't doubt that videos like these take ages to put together. Thanks for the great content guys, keep it up!
I recommend looking at American Life first. It's a very easy one to learn but takes a decent amount of time to perfect and it'll really skyrocket your string precision.
It is so wild remembering the first vids I watched were like the Maytallica ones I think back in 2016 or 2017. And now seeing your content grow and you you grow as an artist and as a filmmaker, it is so wonderful seeing stuff like this. Love this channel to death.
I've recently started playing bass as my brother's band needed a bassist, and I've watched sooo many videos trying to get better at bass, and seriously this video has been so much more helpful than a lot of the 'pro' bassist videos online.
Screwing around?! Eating and working out are necessary, they were using their down time effectively! And painting a masterpiece like they did is using their creative talents and maximizing their time! I guess the chess and video games were less helpful effective though 😂
That outro jam definitely sounded like it could've been an outtake from Sailing the Seas of Cheese or Pork Soda, always love hearing the Primus-inspired jams you come up with
Reminded me of an old victor wooten video when rob tried playing “wrong notes” but with good rythmn and not overthinking. I’d imagine many of guys know the vid Im talking about
Interesting, I've been playing bass for awhile but learned after guitar so haven't really had any direction on technique. I slap very differently to you but it still works for me. I tend to hit the string as closer to a 90 degree angle to the bass and then pull my thumb away quickly. I can still play fast slapping like the intro to higher ground by the peppers so it's not really an issue but I thought it was an interesting note in case people find it easier that the way Rob described. The only difference if that with my technique you need to mute the other strings with your left hand as they won't be muted with your right
I do the same thing. I learned from a video where they described the technical differences between Claypool's slap and Flea's slap, and the main difference is the angle of the hand and thumb
Holy crap the timing! Just last week I picked up a bass after a couple of years and wanted to learn slapping. Gonna pick some tips from this video for sure!
Remember to take ur time with each individual string with slapping (to become more consistent ) and soon you’ll catch onto it. Ur fingers may hurt from the popping of the strings but overtime your fingers will build the calluses. Good luck on ur slap bass journey
Thanks brother, i've had trouble with slap since the beggining of playing bass (one year+ ago) now i'm trying to focus on it. Huge fan of primus aswell haha
Muting the strings you don't want to hear and aim the next string when you slap. After all this time trying to slap, finally, something comes up with this key advice. Thank you Rob.
A lot of "How to Slap like a PRO!" videos usually just teach you how to pluck and slap and just say "Good luck!" This video actually teaches you the style along with the pluck and slap, with even more methods. Great for a beginner (like me, perfect timing for the video) or a experienced bassist who wants to explore with slap.
Thanks for making a detailed video on your slapping. You really showed what you actually do while playing, other musicians just kinda slap the song and then say "and that's how i slap". I don't feel like a dumbass after watching YOUR video. Thanks Rob!
It’s so funny how Rasheed looks like he’s playing the most epic guitar sequence, but he’s literally just playing a couple of notes and repeating them lmaooo
The instrcutions are as good as the background actions are funny 😄 very original compared to regular YT humor, so refreshing ! and the final clip.. so good !!
Huge Primus/Sausage fan here. Les inspired me as well, Rob. Just wish this apartment complex was cool with instruments, so I didn't have to play at Radio Shack, our local music shop.
I'm invested in that struggle connecting the cord at 8:36 in the background. Wait what are they doing anyways? Wait, are those GAMEBOYS?! On behalf of all of us, we HAVE TO know what they were playing!
Beautiful bass, I am totally happy with mine tone was, but yours looks really great. Sounds great too. Ok, it's starting good, have the same issues you had at the start, let's see if this one finally makes things click with me and enjoy some slap playing. So far I had no luck to graps the exact motion "trick" to do it properly. Looking forward to the rest of this one.
Rob actually has one of the new shecter exotic basses? Damn, I remember when these were announced 2 years ago and then they just never appeared anywhere. Can't find demos, can't find them in stores, out of stock online, its like they never existed
Rob scallion you are like my best friend. No way, you are my best friend.!!😲 Been watching you from the beginning. Love to see you having fun, getting loose, and giving me inspiration to pull my Bass off the wall and get groovie. Background antics kept distracting me and I'd have to rewatch portions of the video, hilarious. Good funky jam at the end,🎵 thanks so much for the content.
The song gives me a Primus vibe 100%. Rob moving on to Bass now? Nice to see more guitar players moving on to bass. I mean I could walk across my street and shake a tree and a guitar player will fall from it. My neighbor was a guitar player to the end, until I brought my bass over to his house one day for him to give it a listen. A few weeks later he went out and purchased a bass, which he now plays more then his guitars. I too am guilty from starting off with a guitar for awhile, until I tried a bass, and now I have a lot more hours on a bass then I did when I played a guitar. Bass guitars are just much more fun to play when you can get percussions sounds off a string instrument as well as chords, so they are like two instruments in one.
Excellent tutorial! My bass has been tucked away for too long...gonna have to break it out again now. And LOL at everything going on in the background. 🤣
Had to pause the video to comment that the trick of thinking of the 14th fret as the 2nd fret but an octave higher has kind of blown my mind. Like, I knew that was the musical relation but I rarely play up there because I didn't have the same intuition.
i like to imagine a universe where rob scallon teaches thump because holy moly it's so difficult. oh, and something about thump and slap, with slap, you do a lot of wrist movements, while with thump, you tend to want you wrist relatively stationary.
I love how Jessica and Rasheed have their own little party going on in the background the whole time. From making food to doing yoga to jumping rope, it's hilarious 😂
I was totally loving the band in the background just doing their own thing!
This is actually helping to learn, just like fidgeting or drawing in class. I don't remember the exact word for it, but i know there is such a concept.
