Thank you, Jerome, for reviewing Gamera! I only saw this movie a couple of times, so I don't remember all the details. The only things I remember are, that Gamera can fly, the character name, "Doctor Hedaka," probably because of the near-alliteration; and the Rock band singing "Gamera-a-a-a!" :) Thank you for filling-in the gaps.
I think of Gamera as a giant violent Yoda. Gamera is wise and gleeful like Yoda and yet casually destructive as well. And they're both the "friend of all children" in their own way.

Romey, thank you for taking this on. What can I say, I've been a space enthusiast my entire life, and the sheer concept of a giant turtle who can retract, shoot flames, spin, become his own spaceship, and travel through interplanetary space was simply too charming for me to resist. I've never really cared that much about the actual movies, it's the simple idea of Gamera I've always had a soft spot for. (I frankly find him easier to relate to than Mothra -- why couldn't it have been Gamera who had the singing twin fairies?) I do have to warn you, brace yourself for cuteness overload in Gamera vs. Viras, also billed as Destroy All Planets. I also regret that after all that interplanetary spinning, noone ever had Gamera land, then blow a full minute spinning in the opposite direction just to try to get back his bearings. (There's an argument that an infamous little American movie called The Giant Claw qualifies as kaiju, but I leave that to you.) Anyhow, I thank you for your dedication and thoroughness -- but I have to worry about your owls, as they seem to be getting tiny and flowery, at least in color. I can always use at least one big dark authoritative owl to help set the tone. All right, Romey, you've done well -- and owl be seeing you.

Jerome, it's amazing the hard work you do to please fan requests. I've only seen one Gamera movie - many years ago - but I remember one scene vividly as it really said what the filmmakers thought about teenagers. As Gamera is leveling and destroying everything in his path - a bunch of kids are dancing to the "Gamera song" in a night club. They then ignore all warnings from authorities - "we want to stay here and dance!" they respond. Then - Squish!!! Of course, we all know that people wouldn't ignore official advice meant to keep them alive during emergency times - would they?
The greatest mystery of the 20th century. Why a turtle? Love Gamera because it so over the top violence and interesting monsters design. When i finally saw the Japanese version, i thought this Kenny is insane. But the best thing about him is breathing flames and his flying. Looks great in color.
Just call the kid a Kenny. All the kids in Gamera movies are Kennys.... And there are other turtles that walk upright.TMNT :) And I would argue that he was very antagonist. I mean there is a scene where he literally turns his flame breath on a group of people in a building after he ripped off the roof. He roast them alive. Which seems so counterproductive to the kid saying "Gamera is a good monster". I will never be about to get over that scene. Barbecuing people alive....to playing his theme song with a club along an alien shark's back. Yep, the series is weird lol.

I loved the Godzilla review and appreciate you giving Gamers a watch as I love the villains going against Gamera. Just love all of the Malkin films from all over the world.
Here's a fun fact: about 20 years ago, there was actually a Godzilla vs Gamera film announced, but it was permanently shelfed. I've read conflicting reports about why. One source said that it was because after Daiei was bought-out by Kadokawa, they were really not interest in the Gamera franchise anymore. Another source said that it was because Kadokawa wanted Gamera to win and Toho wasn't going to let Godzilla lose to Gamera. I would almost like to see a Legendary version of Gamera fitted into the Godzilla MonsterVerse if they could get the licensing rights to him.
Sorry, don't believe that for a second. I'm sure Daiei would love to be connected to Godzilla. However, Toho has shown only apathy for Gamera. Probably a rumor started by the same people that said there were two different endings to King Kong vs. G. As Tom from Tom and Jerry would say, "don't you believe it!"
I was pleasantly surprised the first time I saw this film--which was actually only a couple years ago, despite the fact that I am a big fan of monster movies. I think GAMERA does a good job of introducing a few unique touches--most especially the subplot involving the boy--to distinguish itself from Godzilla, despite the obvious inspiration. Plus I just think the idea of a giant turtle (as opposed to a monstrous T-Rex or dragon or whatever) is kind of endearing. For me GAMERA is one of those fairly good movies that, while never coming anywhere close to greatness, remains solidly entertaining.
Thank you for sharing this. I'll be honest and at the risk of pissing off the Gamera super fans, I never liked the Gamera movies and I definitely think they are weaker compared to the Godzilla movies. I don't know but a flying monster turtle who befriends kids, even that was too far for me. Full disclosure I haven't seen most of them. In fact I was surprised to hear there are 12. I can remember only watching this movie all the way through and just bits and pieces of a few others. So I look forward to your reviews no matter how you present them or how many. Maybe your reviews will finally get me to give this franchise another shot. Side note, the American "actors" in this movie crack me up. I remember thinking did they just grab some American tourists sightseeing in Japan and say "hey do you want to be in a movie?"
It's pretty common even now for Japanese studios to just pull in whatever English-speaking "actors" they can find for those sorts of parts. Japan is such an isolated culture that they tend to only really think about how Japanese audiences are going to see things, and since few of them speak English very well, they don't see any reason to do more than they have to.
some of the Gamera movies are weaker. Primarily movies 4-8. I'd say that the original movie and the even movies 2 & 3 are on par with a lot of Showa era Godzilla movies. The last 4 Gamera movies, being the Heisei trilogy and the millennium era movie, are equal to and even better than a lot of Godzilla movies.

Thanks for pandering to us fans! I hope all the pestering wasn't too annoying. I was very excited to see this review go up. One thing I'll say about the Showa sequels is that they all contain lengthy recaps of all the preceding movies, so if you end up watching a later one, you'll pretty much see all the highlights of the previous movies, at least as far as the monster scenes go. Half of the enjoyment though is all the weird situations the kids get into. And as the Showa series goes on, it gets more and more ridiculous. If you do end up watching more of them, you could save a substantial amount of time by just skipping past all that repeated footage. I think a lot of fans are kind of blinded by the Heisei trilogy, in that they look at what works and sort of willfully ignore the parts that don't (I'm definitely guilty of having looked at them that way in the past). Not to say that I don't still like them a lot, but there are definitely some questionable creative choices and weird little things in all three of them.

The dance sequence might not be that random since Gamera's screech was created using gloved hands across a guitar string. This was probably the editors poking fun at the effect. Don't get me wrong, its still random but knowing that bit of trivia makes the segue a lot more humorous in my opinion.

Gamera is a little bit adorable when he waddles lol, he looks so clumsy its no wonder he knocks over everything, he's part black friday shopper part Mr Blobby ruclips.net/video/n1TE6JN9dio/видео.html Mr Blobby is a very odd British television character from around the 1990's and he is still referenced occasionally now, it was incredibly popular, it's a thing, thingy, not really sure how to describe it, odd, weird, weirdly odd lol. it's also hard not to think of otters when I see a turtle at the moment or I should say one otter in particular, need a kaiju otter to splash around on Gamera's shell and be his friend/sidekick lol. I hope to see Gamera at some point along with so many other kaiju films on my list. Once again a terrific review with interesting points and some great clips/images. 🐢 ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~
I think it's a mistake not to review the entire classic Gamera series. I think you were be surprised. I would say that, with the exception of "Gamera Super Monster," most of the sequels are better than the original. The real standout of the classic Gamera films is "Gamera vs. Barugon" which drops all humor (and kids) and adopts a serious tone on par with, or perhaps a touch darker, than the Godzilla series. The serious approach makes "Gamera vs. Barugon" the best of the classic films. Though "Gamera vs. Gyaos" is pretty darn good as well.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO yAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I think the boy is To-shi-o, not that that matters, yes all the kids of Godzilla movies were annoying like most of them are in sci-fi films for some reason. This kid was okay, I enjoyed it, I also SAW the dubbed version sadly. the Americans in it were okay.
But on which syllable are you putting the emphasis when you say it? The easiest option is to not say it at all, but I couldn't just call him "the kid" through the whole review. :)
I'd say that the first Gamera film is pretty good. The second two are decent. Everything after that in the showa era are lousy. But the Heisei era Gamera trilogy is not only outstanding, but better than 90% of any of the Godzilla movies. Don't get me wrong. There's a LOT wrong with the Heisei trilogy. Especially the 2nd and 3rd movie (which I feel are overrated). And the millennium era Gamera movie is great. Combining the seriousness of the Heisei trilogy and the kid-friendly "Gamera: Friend of all Children" thematic elements of the Showa movies.
Oooh! I'm going to exercise my democratic right to "early absentee voting" and cast my ballot for 1980's "Gamera Super Monster." I promise you after viewing it your life will never be the same. Whether for good or bad, I'm not at liberty to say...
BTW, sorry to make three comments in a row but I'm not sure when your next vid will be up and I don't want to forget by the time you do I was just wondering what you're thoughts would be on 1981's, "Pennies From Heaven"? with Steve Martin, Jessica Harper and Bernadette Peters. I'd ask you to compare it to the original British TV show but I can only find the first three episodes the last three are blocked in the U.S. for copywrite reasons. ruclips.net/video/RPRL3IdIcVc/видео.html

I hope to see Gamera at some point along with so many other kaiju films on my list. Once again a terrific review with interesting points and some great clips/images. 🐢 ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~
Welllllllll, that's the weirdest thing I've seen all day today! Thanks for that. :D
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
yAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
I think the boy is To-shi-o, not that that matters, yes all the kids of Godzilla movies were annoying like most of them are in sci-fi films for some reason. This kid was okay, I enjoyed it, I also SAW the dubbed version sadly. the Americans in it were okay.
But on which syllable are you putting the emphasis when you say it? The easiest option is to not say it at all, but I couldn't just call him "the kid" through the whole review. :)
@@Weiselberry I was putting emphasis on the Os, but yeah not easiest to say, at least he wasn't super annoying; thanks for replying J :) stay safe
Hey.. It just dawned on me how weird this film is.
^Another MST3K Quote.
Gamera Super Monster is the Godzilla's Revenge of the Gamera Series.

Jerome Weiselberry sorry you got a message from someone ignore it plaese i am sorry

You are beautiful. Have you read The Raft by Robert Trumbull?
Nevermind. I have seen an older video of your book reviews and I realized you have read it before.👍
Yes, I have! I thought it was great.
