Great and honest review! (just found your channel) I'm a nut for Kaiju films also, and of the Gamera Showa's, I like GAMERA VS. BARUGON the most. The movies featuring Guiron and yes, Gyaos, are also entertaining. I've never once regretted purchasing Arrow's Gamera Blu-ray sets (Showa and Heisei) even though some of the Gamera films get a bit tough to sit through.

You also saw Gyaos in G vs. Guiron. I understand your comments and reaction completely. You have to remember that these were purposefully aimed at children and didn't have much of a budget. I have a different opinion which is definitely colored with nostalgia and remembering these films through my child-eyes. I am envious of the people that can say they know which film they saw first and when and where they saw it. I am not sure; however, I do know that this film and King Kong vs. G where two of the films that had the most impression on me growing up.
Unfortunately, I had no Godzilla or Gamera toys growing up. What I had was a sandbox and one of the toys that were with that was a plastic turtle. I also found a stick that sort of resembled Gyaos - in Cubist sort of way. So I got to play for awhile pretending - at least until someone found the stick and thought it was just a stick and got rid of it. I wasn't happy. Oh, well, I got over it. Yes, this is not a high quality movie and, of course, the kids are always annoying until the Heisei series. As a kid, I always wanted the monster stuff, but now, I need a good human story for these monster movies.

The words "giant flame-throwing rocket-powered turtle" will never fail to make me smile. Go Gamera! That said this particular entry is not one of my favourites either. I generally have no problem with the child protagonists in this series (they are kids movies after all) but Eichi is a bit much. I blame the script and direction though not the poor child actor trying his best. Luckily better entries were yet to come.

Also you should what do you think of the trailer for Gamera rebirth? 7:46 Gyaos was also shooting at Gamera in the head to get away so of course he'll lose his grip

Thank you for sharing this video! I don't know how you do it. I've said many times I've never really liked Gamera movies but somehow you always manage to make me at least curious to check them out. Even this movie, even though you are not as enthusiastic about it. Also I particularly liked how you pointed out how important the "human element" in kaiju movies are. I have friends who always say "humans don't matter, it's only about the monsters" argument and I've never been able to argue against them as eloquently as you did.

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  Год назад +2

Aw, I'm glad to hear that! And as far as the debate over the human element goes, I've given it quite a bit of thought in the last few years, trying to decide just how I feel about it. I think a good "case in point" is the fact that films like the original Gojira and Mothra vs. Godzilla have some of the strongest, most interesting characters and storylines, and they continue to be favorites for both casual viewers and diehard kaiju fans alike.

Nice review Weiselberry. FYI, VS Jiger (sorry if I mangled that spelling, I knew it as Gamera VS Monster X when I saw it as a child on local television) is a much better film than VS Zigra.
I mention that only because you said these were the final two you have not seen. Jiger - or Monster X - is a believable looking kajiu and the film has some interesting sci fi elements, along with the late series goofiness of course.
Zigra was made when the studio was in or very near bankruptcy. I never saw or heard of that film until the home video era, it was the one Showa Gamera film that was not sold to American TV back in the day.
As to Gamera’s roar - funny story. When I got my first real job after college, in back office accounting for a corporation, there was a filing cart with casters that badly needed oiling - and I swear when someone pushed that sucker I always thought “that sounds just like Gamera!”

    • @Weiselberry

An old man now I grew up in the 1960's watching Japanese SCI FI and monster movies. Even then I could see an evolution from serious, dark themed adventure, such as the first Godzilla film to a kind of self-mocking parody by the end of the sixties. I like them all, but agree with Miss Weiselberry that the 1967 Gamera vs Gyaos is one of the least engaging, although the colour photography is excellent.
The film does come from a different cultural perspective to Western films, Japan being a corporate culture, the sympathy is with the foreman engineer character who is trying to make a road that will benefit the whole society, against the villagers who are in the way and are portrayed as somewhat selfish. The exact opposite would be more normal in a Western film of the same time.

  • @varanid9

To say Gamera vs Gyaos is one of the better entries in the series isn't exactly high praise. However, it has better FX than the later ones, the human story is reminiscent of the superior Godzilla series, and there is a ghoulish streak in the antagonistic monster. Besides the Hisei series, this one and particularly Gamera vs Barugon are the only watchable films of the franchise, IMHO.

One thing I liked about the aerial battling in the second Gyaos-Gamera encounter was when Ganera was shell-grinding on Gyaos, and Gyaos released his fire extinguisher from his chest and extinguished Gameras leg-hole jets, 'causing Gamera to fall (fortunately) into the ocean.

So scared for Gamera when I watched this as a kid! Lots of give and take and surprises in the monster battles. I think Gamera v. Barugon was the best of the old Gamera films, though. On the other hand, Jerry Lewis once said, of the cabin-stranded Tramp-gold-speculator eating a boiled boot in Chaplin's 'Gold Rush', the great question is: Did you eat it with him. More so than in Gam v. Brgn, I suffered with Gamera when he fought Gyaos.

Hi JW. I agree with you concerning Gamera vs Gyaos. In fact, I'm not much of a fan of the Showa Gamera films as a whole. The Heisei movies are another matter. I enjoy those and rematch them fairly often. But for 1960s kaiju films, I much prefer Godzilla over Gamera. Heck, I'd probably even favor Gorgo or Gappa or the X from Outer Space over Showa Gamera. The Daimijin trilogy is also great, and I enjoyed your review of them.

I have to agree across the board on this one. It had been a zillion-ish years since I'd seen it, so what it was about (other than giant monsters, one of which happened to be Giant Turtle Gammera) I remembered not a thing about it.
I think they missed an opportunity for both more story cohesion AND laughs by not making the real estate -conflicted characters take up some kind of physical battle with each other---the villagers taking up posts in the hills nearby to foil the real-estate types/developers who come in with big machinery (or sumptin'---I'm just blue-skying goofy ideas here), to parallel the big monsters fighting: It could've been done very subtley, but better if the parallels very pretty overt, maybe even characters referencing the monsters, saying "now WE're acting like those monsters! We are humans! --we can do better than them!" or some such. Oh well, not my place to be second guessing a film meant mostly for pleasing youngsters. That's just the writer side coming out with a faint whisper in my head of "wish I'd been there when they were figuring the story out!".
I love that you point out that the most incredible thing of all is that all these serious adults listen to the words of a child so seriously....and how funny that whole deal with the skeleton-interior of Gyaos!
Thanks for another very fun, very comprehensive review!

It seems as if because I enjoy other dorky nerdy sci-fi things I should love these movies but I only like them and watch one or two a year. I enjoy your review because it stands out on RUclips, most channels either praise everything about these movies as the best things ever made or make fun of them and treat them like they are only here to be laughed at. Have a great day everyone.

I think in the vacuum of the internet where strangers with like interests are able to band together, it can create the mentality that if you love Thing 1, you must also love Thing 2. But that's really not a rule. These giant rubber monster movies are definitely an acquired taste, and I know of lots of sci-fi fans who can't get into them. In my case, it took a while for me come around to loving the Godzilla series, and even then, there were entries I didn't care for. And I never did warm to the Gamera series. But I try to be as fair with them as I am with any film, pointing out their strengths and respecting the filmmakers for their efforts... while also having a good laugh when they do something bonkers. :) Anyway, I'd say you're in good company here.

  • @bartolomeuomacduibheamhnad6855

Gamera vs. Gyaos sounds bonkers, Gamera’s eyes look pretty googly in this one, if he was pulled over by giant space turtle traffic cops he’d probably need to do a breathalyser test to make sure he wasn’t on something. It seems like the budget was spent on cutting the car in half so they had to save on the Kaiju costumes lol. Gyaos does look like he’s wearing a graduation hat lol.

Just finished watching Gamera versus Gyaos in preparation for your review.I enjoyed it.The villagers seeking a better price for
their land is kind of padding. With a moral lesson to impart. We don't get to see enough of Gamera. He is the star. His name is in
the title. The boy was the wise sage.Who names Gyaos due to the noise the kaiju makes. The young audience would have identified
with him.And would have been thrilled to see the adults listening to him and taking his useful advice.Your observation about
Gyaos having a graduation pate made me laugh. What prestigious learning academy is Gyaos an alumni of?
I also got to see The Thief of Bagdad 1924.A large scale epic that is thrilling to behold.Loved the use of colour tints.
Green and red looked quite striking. How many times have elements of this been used in other movies over the last century?

This is not a Toho film, but this might reflect a mid-20h Century Japanese attitude towards villagers:
"Kikuchiyo: What do you think of farmers? You think they're saints? Hah! They're foxy beasts! They say, "We've got no rice, we've no wheat. We've got nothing!" But they have! They have everything! Dig under the floors! Or search the barns! You'll find plenty! Beans, salt, rice, sake! Look in the valleys, they've got hidden warehouses! They pose as saints but are full of lies! If they smell a battle, they hunt the defeated! They're nothing but stingy, greedy, blubbering, foxy, and mean! God damn it all!
[He hurls a handful of arrows into the wall]
Kikuchiyo: But then who made them such beasts? You did! You samurai did it! You burn their villages! Destroy their farms! Steal their food! Force them to labour! Take their women! And kill them if they resist! So what should farmers do?
[Kikuchiyo sinks to his knees, and begins to sob uncontrollably]
    Kikuchiyo: Damn... damn... damn... damn...
[Kambei unfolds his arms and looks down at the palms of his hands]
Kambei Shimada: [Quietly, after a long pause] You were the son of a farmer, weren't you?"
