I was really impressed with your reading Peter! I originally intended to fall asleep, but I stayed up till 5am listening to this because it turned out to be so captivating. I don't think I'd ever be able to read aloud for almost 2 hours so perfectly. Super high quality content
God, this story reminds me of my depression. Has ever since I read it in middle school. A man wakes up one day, suddenly unable to go to work and unable to speak clearly. He continues to spiral downwards in despair, dragging his family along with him, and then he dies. Cheery stuff. Great reading, Peter.
There is a happy ending though. That is what we must take away from the story. Throughout Gregor’s “despair” his family is forced to change. I think that is the true metamorphoses. They started out dreadful, but emerge as fine, respectable people.
@@joanduthie1689 I mean, it's about a man falling deeper and deeper into a depression, no longer taking care of himself, and committing suicide through neglect, all the while his family grow to hate him more and more and are happy when he's dead. The moral is that if you suffer from mental illness you are a burden to your loved ones and are better off dead. Not happy at all. I do suspect it was a way for the author to vent about their experiences with mental illness and how they're treated, rather than actually teaching that as a moral, since you empathize with Gregor. Still sad either way. A family being happy their depressed brother/son kills himself so he's not a burden anymore is not a happy ending my dude. And why the quotes over "despair" his anguish was a billion percent justified.
@@joanduthie1689 I'm glad his family could move on, but clearly Gregor (in whose mind we're placed, through whose sight we see the story) was denied that "happy ending." It's embittering and awful that they just cast him aside like that. It's happened to me, too, and just like Gregor, I know there's a reason. I have become a creature that lives in filth, can't communicate with others, can't even leave it's bed, something awful that sucks the energy and joy out of people. I'm not the same person as I was, and my people can't like (or even understand) the person I've become. If they're better after they toss me away, well, good for them. I'm glad that someone can be happy. But I don't think being abandoned because you've become repulsive at no fault of your own is a happy ending. I don't think dying unloved is a message of hope. But there's a catharsis to seeing that ugly bleakness depicted in media, because I know there's at least one other guy out there who also knows what it means to be Gregor.
Peter Ive been subscribed for about 5 years and I just want to say its been amazing to see the progress of your channel. You have really inspired me to draw my own things and I just want to say your great and keep up the good work ;)
He was used as the home's only wage earner to pay back debts that weren't his and then, in his time of need he was locked away and treated like a dangerous pet.
15:28 "That boy has nothing on his mind but the business!" Haha, this line is great because it sounds like it could be sampled for a rap or pop song. I think it's pretty clearly implied that the character's fixation on money/business is detrimental to their well-being, though. I feel that way too; even though looking out for greed and planning finances are essential to survive in our system, I hate doing both of these things so much. I sometimes wonder how much time of my life has been wasted thinking of money, which is both a meaningless placeholder for distribution of goods, and that which determines if we live or die. I think a century ago, Kafka too had the burden of the ubiquitousness of money, that lie of a valuation, to bear on top of his depression, and I feel for him.
This had me crying at 3 am in the night. Such a good book and your narration added so much to it. This is the first i have heard an audiobook from you but i have watched ur art and pen reviews for a while..and i have the sudden urge to binge listen to all your audiobooks immediately
2022; I can think of no more humbling a story to begin my year with than this. If you're still reading these, you've done a wonderful job. Love ya Peter
Franz Kafka was a cheerful kinda fella. In the Penal Colony was among my favorites but I never forgot reading this book in high school as ‘required reading’. It lead to crazier stuff like Naked Lunch and the Complete works of H. P. Lovecraft. Nice reading Peter, I truly enjoyed it.
Peter I could seriously watch you draw and listen to you talk all day long. Seriously every time I hear your voice and watch you draw you inspire me to relax and inspire me to draw even if at times I have a hard time thinking of things to draw. Thank you Peter. 😊
I had to read this for school but your reading helped me not only get through the story, but thoroughly enjoy it in the process. For that I thank you!!!
Thank you, I have trouble committing to novellas such as this because of my poor attention span, so I'm glad to have the opportunity to read the story in this way.
Overall, my sophomores seemed to appreciate Kafka's story. Thank you for reading and drawing. Not only is the artwork unique, but the steadiness of your hand is most impressive.
I know this is an old video, but I love this idea of a story whilst we draw together. You give me great inspiration, Peter. I'm trying to stay away from the drugs, and putting my mind into art. It has been working this time, I hope I can carry this on and feel excited with art and not drugs. Thankyou, from Carla, I'm using my fellas phone at the minute, so none of those bad influences can ring me.
Hi! I am from the Czech Republic, the country Franz Kafka came from. He lived in Prague. Also fantastic video as always. :) I love your job and the videos with the audiobooks are really good idea. Thank you. Its beatiful. Keep going Peter. ;)
@@cube2fox yes he did, in his museum nearby the Charles bridge you might find many letters and original handwritten books mostly in Czech, also lived at multiple places here in Prague and dated many Czech women.
I found myself painting while you read. Kafka was a very surreal read or listening experience which had my imagination was running on pure ether. Has me wanting to do a painting of my own visual thoughts of what I’m hearing come to life. I enjoy and appreciate a good reader. You do well. Thanx.
Whoo Hooo! When I check for a Peter video at 3:15 am my time and.... JACKPOT! ! ! Love You Peter ! Update; That was a great reading, I fell asleep listening to it. I'm pretty much an insomniac, so I really appreciate your story videos, and in a different way from how I enjoy your other videos ❤❤❤
*spoilers?* I remember being given the short opening passage as a reading comprehension test for a SAT test and being so confused by it and I didn't find out later the reason he had so many legs was because he had turned into a roach. I read the book afterwords in hope context would help but it didn't really.
It says he turns into a bug in the very first sentence. Different words are used for it depending on the translation, I think. "Monstrous vermin" in this case.
This book hit different when I read it when I was grounded. I felt more empathy for Gregor for him being trapped in his room as I also was trapped in my room and leaving would be a death sentence
I am honestly very impressed with your ease and confidence to compose an image. I consider myself a very competent renderer, but employing imagination on the fly as you do is definitely not in my nature, so I admire it greatly. Recently discovered your channel and have been making my way through your videos and making a few purchases with your amazon link, hope it does a small part to keep the lights on. Keep on 'Drahw-ring' brother -
I quite like this, thank you for sharing:) Your videos help continue my creative flow when normally I would become consumed by some sort of art block and become discouraged from making art
Dear Peter, thanks a lot for all that quality content. I wish you all the best, especially concerning your career as an artist, you deserve your success. It's rare for me to hear someone sound smart, but there you are bro ! Keep it up and trust yourself, you're doing a great job :D
I found your channel after being recommended a @Nightshade video, and I love your content! I am an art school dropout and haven't been able to pursue/practice my art for a long time (partly because of my job and also because I felt uninspired for so long). Thank you for sharing your art - your calmness and what I find to be authentic presentation really "drew" me in. 🥴🤓 I started sketching and finally used my nice set of pens the other day... pen and ink used to be one of my favorite mediums and I really appreciate your technique and that you share helpful tips. I always end up getting ink on my hands or smudging my shit but a few little tweaks and slowing down make a big difference. Also, I realized that I haven't wanted to draw or pAint because I have regret over letting my drawing skills wain... I see my portfolio and look at it with disdain because I see all my old work as not good enough, or immature maybe is the word I want? Logically, I know that I must consistently spend time and expend effort to grow and feel more confident, but I also realize I've just been overthinking it all far too much. Thank you again for inspiring me to just draw, and enjoy myself. (I've been looking at glass pens and ink since one I watched of you trying some new ones out and I'm hoping to try that once I get more comfortable and also can keep a piece smudge free, haha) 🖋
Wow what a great book. I was honestly only looking for a short classic novel for my independent reading project. But in the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Your artwork is incredible. Both the reading and the speed paint kept me hooked! Keep up the great work! :)

why? because Gregor had no free health care?

Why did this pop up on my recommended AFTER the AP Lit test?????
