African Americans always seem to focus on their being no black players in hurling or gaelic football. Its not because we have segregation or especially racist in ireland its just that we are nearly all white as a nation. They are many black people here now ,but thats only recently and they come from basically soccer countries therefore don't have the skills for our native sports and don't know them so gravitate towards soccer instead. You see people from ethnic minorities on county teams at younger age level alot more and hopefully this will happen at adult senior level as well. You have to remember up on till twenty years ago ireland was a country you left not go to.

O'Learys lie but the stats don't - Kilkenny are by far the best. In the history of the All Ireland they've won more championships than any other county and since 2000 they've won 11 All Irelands - Cork have won 2 in the same period.
cahillgreg settle down there now kid. Kilkenny fortuitously had an amazing team in that period which just happened to coincide with the demise in Cork hurling of the same period due internal rows/strikes etc. Like Kerry it makes things a hell of a lot easier when a county concentrates on one code also with Cork dealing with both along with LOI football all and rugby. And lest we forget not one but-two doubles then the choice for most successful county really becomes a complicated affair. The Rebels are back on track and building. But let us not tarnish hurlings greatest rivalry by getting nasty. My grandad used to say it’s no achievement unless you skin the cats on the way Croake Park so there is a lot of respect for Kilkenny down these parts.
I'm obviously Irish (half Irish really) and got introduced to hurling back in the day when ABC Wide World of Sports would show the all-Ireland championship every year around St. Patrick's Day. You would have to be Irish to be crazy enough to play this.
Joe McD. God made Ireland covered in peat because the Irish are the only people on the earth stubborn enough to try and burn mud . My great grandfather was Pasco Lee Splawn , everyone called him Patty .
We didn't do slavery so there are not too many brothers about. There are a few now and we should see a few soon. Hurling is not a paid sport, they play for free.
A few answers to your questions. You can't hold the ball for long, think of it like travelling in basketball. If you hit it over the bar, you get one point. If you hit in the goal, you get 3 points. The ball is called a sliotar and it's hard. If you get hit with it (and you will!) - it stings. It's also an amateur sport, so nobody gets paid. There are some black guys who play, but remember - black migrants to Ireland is a reasonably new thing, so lots of the younger black kids nowadays will play for sure and spice things up. You'll see them in the next few years at the highest level (county level).
To the other Irish people commenting here: Hurling has been around for 1000s of years, true. However, up to quite recently the rules were not well documented. It seems that in the past it was not a field game but played along roads, between villages. If that is the case and as it's a Celtic game, Golf might be another version of it. That would be really interesting to research.
My son plays every week with our local club Na Fianna .. you have to start when you’re four or five .. otherwise the amount of skills needed is just too hard to pick up.
Irish game, 3000 years old. In last few years, with more immigration to the country, the pool of players is becoming much more diverse You get one point for putting it over the bar between the uprights, and 3 points for scoring a goal. You shoul check out Gaelic Football, the other big national sport in Ireland. ruclips.net/video/EjvUld0shh8/видео.html You do get both sports in the US, with GAA(Gaelic Athletic Association) clubs in cities like Chicago and New York, and New York actually participates in the big summer Championship here in Ireland. Interesting bit of trivia, both sports were actually exhibition sports in the 1905 St. Louis Olympics, demonstrated by various clubs from around the US. I believe a club from Chicago won. As well, its speculated that Ice Hockey was an adaptation of hurling(or Shinty as its known in Scotland) by Irish and Scottish immigrants to Canada.
Hurling is one of the oldest field games in the world and is popular for at least 3000 years in Ireland with the first literary reference dating back to 1272 BC.

No, never too old to hurl! I played my first match when I was 56, the oldest rookie hurler on the planet and coached the Indiana University Hurling Club to the 1st National Collegiate Championship...never too old!
MrMichaelCavlan the game isn't called Hurley as well that's what the stick is called and the ball is called a sliotar

Hurling is Irish. The Scottish version is called Shinty. It's one of the fastest, most skillful and dangerous games ever invented. It's been around in various forms for well over a thousand years. And it's NOTHING like baseball.
Hurling is irish and thats what it is caled for boys and camogie is hat we call it for the girls and i play camogie Up The Irish Repuplic
Thank you for appreciating it. It’s the BEST. SPORT. ON. EARTH. 😄

It's Irish and only played in Ireland
Max Russellstown some places in America are playing it now. Irish coaches have moved there and have made their own teams. you can watch them on RUclips.
That was fun to watch! Much better to appreciate another country's sport rather than criticize it because it's different that your favorite game, you know?
Ireland 😂
I love people's reactions to hurling its just amazing
Hurling is Irish and the goals are the same in gaa
GAA is not a sport, ;)
GAA runs hurling as well so obviously thats the case.
stoney71 ? ok
L H GAA is the Gaelic Athletic Association, it's not an actual sport it's the organisation. A lot of people just call hurling hurling and refer to football as gaa
On the rebels
react to gaelic football next
Hurling is Irish. Oldest and Fastest sport in the world. Not for wimps, most players have had teeth knocked out but most of them now wear a helmet which is not compulsory. Its MAD.

Hurling is an irish sport its the worlds oldest field sport. 3000+ years old. Its also the fastest sport on grass. Its played on a field roughly 4 times the size of a soccer field. You can carry the ball in your hand for 4 steps then you either have to pass it shoot or balance it on the hurl(stick)

Your confusion was hilarious😆. Ive played it, I was good too. 👍🏼
This is Irish, and also Corks the best
O'Learys lie but the stats don't - Kilkenny are by far the best. In the history of the All Ireland they've won more championships than any other county and since 2000 they've won 11 All Irelands - Cork have won 2 in the same period.
Are you sure
Adam O Leary Corcaigh Abú!
Adam O Leary Cork V Limerick tomorrow? ?
cahillgreg settle down there now kid.
My great grandfather was Pasco Lee Splawn , everyone called him Patty .
tá an iomáint go mór i mbéal an phobail up the Desie and up Ireland
Why does anyone care if an American is amazed by hurling. ..It will take five minutes out of his day and never think of it again...
We didn't do slavery so there are not too many brothers about. There are a few now and we should see a few soon. Hurling is not a paid sport, they play for free.
At 3:29. That's not a miss. That's the player behind him hooking his stick. The way to overcome that is a shorter grip on the hurley stick.
My mother used to play back in the day .. now my son plays as well as rugby .. it’s one of Irelan’s national sports.
I don't play hurling but I love watching it is sport is so old like 3000 years old
Our country's most old and treasured sport 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Hurling is a 3,000 + years old Irish ☘️ game & it’s the Best, fastest & toughest field game in the World
its irish and new york and london also have teams
A few answers to your questions. You can't hold the ball for long, think of it like travelling in basketball. If you hit it over the bar, you get one point. If you hit in the goal, you get 3 points. The ball is called a sliotar and it's hard. If you get hit with it (and you will!) - it stings. It's also an amateur sport, so nobody gets paid. There are some black guys who play, but remember - black migrants to Ireland is a reasonably new thing, so lots of the younger black kids nowadays will play for sure and spice things up. You'll see them in the next few years at the highest level (county level).
One of the oldest and fastest field sports in the world 🇮🇪 the beautiful and violent game of hurling. I just wish antrim could win 😢.
You got to love the Mad Irish!
"Can you tackle?" lol
I came across hurling a few years ago. Still blows my mind
I'm Irish and that's were it's from
Hurling is an irish sport its over 3000 years old and you are allowed to catch it only 2 times if u catch it 3 times its a free to the other team
My son plays every week with our local club Na Fianna .. you have to start when you’re four or five .. otherwise the amount of skills needed is just too hard to pick up.
Irish game, 3000 years old.
In last few years, with more immigration to the country, the pool of players is becoming much more diverse
You get one point for putting it over the bar between the uprights, and 3 points for scoring a goal.
You shoul check out Gaelic Football, the other big national sport in Ireland.

You do get both sports in the US, with GAA(Gaelic Athletic Association) clubs in cities like Chicago and New York, and New York actually participates in the big summer Championship here in Ireland.
Baseball is also an Irish game.
Surprised?
It was developed first as a GAA sport called "Rounders".
I have only just started watching your video, but I reckon you will love the sport. When I first saw it, I thought WTF, but I love the sport, it is crazy but..... just wow :-)
Hurling is so old that it is in Irish mythology
I love how like everything was cork it made me so actually made me so proud ❤️
Hurling = Irish = unreal sport
