Thanks for reacting to my video!
You can take three steps with the ball in hand, but to run any steps beyond that you have to balance the ball on the stick.
You can't pick the ball directly off the ground with your hand, hence you have to scoop it up with the stick.
I tried to explain it as best I could with the captions using as few words as possible, so apologies if something got lost.

Then having a break to drink tea and eat fancy cakes (which I believe are quite nice) every half hour no wonder the game lasts for 5 days, I mean come on!

It was more than likely a battlefield simulation to get young warriors used to melees and violence on the battlefield. Hence the combination of contact, physicality and speed. Two groups rushing at one another with weapons being swung around on an open field. Ancient legendary Irish warriors like Cùchulainn played it as boys and their skills with the hurley and sliotar were legendary.

The part where it said take ball in hand for 3 steps and you said he took 17, the ball wasn't in his hand it was balanced on the hurley ;)
The keepers can actually pull off some great saves, pretty sure there a vid on youtube of hurling keeper saves, go find it and there another reaction video.
There probably some videos showing more of the hard hits that can happen...it is not uncommon for a hurley (the stick) to get broken on a players shin....you'll also notice they don't wear shinpads (if anyone tried it would be like wearing two massive targets) and helmets were only made mandatory about 10 years ago I think

OK, I need to clear this up, the stick is a Hurl/Hurley, they don't have 3 steps they have 5, when the ball is on your hurl you have unlimited steps, you can bounce it off the ground to be able to put it in your hand again

  • @lleweybyrne
    @lleweybyrne 3 года назад +5

That video is very sanitised and is the cleaned up version of the sport. Believe me you need to brave as hell to play that game. I tried pretty much every sport you can think of and nohing, and I mean nothing even comes close to playing hurling in terms of intensity and being on edge because you know that in the next tackle you could get hurt badly by a hurl (axe shaped stick 😂) coming across your body at full force. Remember this is an amateur sport and these guys have jobs on Monday morning! I like the idea you had of getting rid of the goalposts and just using a soccer style goal. That would be a very interesting thing to try, I’d never even thought of that concept. In my opinion there’s far too many long range points being scored which causes long breaks in play and the art of defending has been reduced.

Only a race as crazily creative as the Irish could have invented hurling. The "ball" is called a "slithur" and is quite light with raised stitching. The "bat"- hurl- is made from the ash tree. For years players didn't wear helmets mouth guards. Imagine the carnage. Thanks for posting this.

Next time you say hurling is not a though sport , maybe get a fue hurls broken off you. If you dont want to do that watch something like :Irish hurling-best fights! Toughest sport on earth, to educate yourself on what happens behind the scenes (ignoring the ruel book). Then you might be able to decide is hurling a game for the though. I would just like to remind you that this is an armature game, it has been around for 3000 years. People play it not for money or fame , instead they play it for their community, their parish, their county, with their friends and neighbour's. Every player is a volunteer, they all have jobs, hurling is a hobby but one that they take very seriously. most players have to travel long distances to get to training several times a week , and they dont get played every extra moment is spent training or travelling to training. It is unfair to say that this is a sport of speed not bravery but every aspect of this game is brave.

You can only hold it in your hand for 3 steps, after which you need to use the hurl (the stick)
Croke Park, the main stadium in Dublin for Gaelic Games, is the 4th largest stadium in Europe.
Scoring a goal is actually not as easy as you'd think, because the keepers in Hurling aren't right in the head, and make incredible saves. Plus there is a big buzz seeing a player at some weird angle near the sidelines manage to put the sliotar(the ball which is not a soft ball at all) over the bar from 50 yards out from the goal under pressure.
This sport is talked about in the most ancient of irish folktales.

There used to be a Gaelic pitch on Hackney Marshes and another in Finsbury Park, another on Wormwood Scrubs, behind the prison. The first two have gone now. I don't know if Wormwood Scrubs is still used. The main venue for the GAA games in London is in Ruislip.

A goal is worth 3 points and when the ball goes over the bar it's worth one it's a full contact sport and it's also a very passionate sport

You can't pick up the ball off the ground with your hand. One of the attractions is that it's high scoring. Obviously scores would be smaller if there was just a football goal.

You have to dribble the ball for 3 steps. You can carry it on the hurl for however

All Irish sports are armature. When good you play for your county e2 in Ireland, England is county and so is New York at time of vague recollection. You can't hold the ball in your for HAND for more than 3 seconds but it can be on the end of the hurl (axe shaped stick) as lo g as you you. AFL is dangerous? You're advised to wear a helmet and most do, some don't. There's guys there with wounds that needed 40 stitches. Croke Park when the finals are held only has a capacity of 85,000 people. I think it's the 3rd biggest in Europe. And it's AMATEUR

You CAN'T pick the ball of the ground with your hand
And yes you can catch it in the air, but the chances are that while you're reaching out to grab it someone else is swinging at it at 80mph with the 'axe shaped stick'
Hurlers are fucking nails my friend

Basically they are only a couple of key rules
1 The ball must not be handled on the ground lifted directly of the ground with the hand,it must be either the stick or foot
2 The ball can not be caught more than once in one possession unless its bounced off the ground
3 The ball is slapped when handpassing never thrown
4 The ball can be carried in the hand for 3 steps
5 No offside except for the goal square
6 Tackling is shoulder to shoulder or with the stick,no rugby or ice hockey like checking
7 The stick must not be dropped ,though it can in the womens game

Wasn't exactly a sport 3000 years ago it was used to build up people to become warriors around that time, and there were no rules around that time, not exactly were the rules were introduced by sometime during the 17/18th century maybe.
