The buckles on the front are supposed to attach the day sack (zainetto tattico = small tactical backpack) that of course can be used separately. The big elastic band can be used for the helmet or other stuff. The fabric loops you noticed on top and bottom of the front side are destined to attach ice axes. The straps you see on the top of the sides (over the external pouches) are designed to carry skis! Even if all Italian Army is provided with this backpack, it's actually called "Zaino alpino", because was created for the Alpini, the mountain troopers of Italian army (and I'm proud to have served with them).
Pack is very cool. Swiss link is great and your awesome for supporting and giving them some publicity. Helping our shrinking surplus buisness is a noble cause in my book. Purchased a rain jacket from them, it had a faulty zipper. just took one email and they sent me a new one free of charge and let me keep the other. Great company! p.s. it's awesome that mil surplus Wednesday is back!
Hi Luke great review of what looks like a great pack! I believe it is called the Italian Mountain Troop SF Alpine Bergen. There is also a detachable patrol bag that it is supposed to come with but these are extremely difficult to find...
alsome pack great price thanks for sharing with us I really like the look of it I appreciate you for taking your time to bring this to us wish you all the very best my friend
I had one for years, I've replaced it with a British plce Bergen just for the detachable side pockets. The actual bag size is 100l for the main bag (including side pockets) + 20l for the detachable bag, which can be used as a standalone pack.
Basically, in the mountain troops (where this backpack is used basically) it cause some problems to the back of the soldier cause this plastic plate on the back. You need REALLY how to load it cause the balancing is the right thing to do with that. U carried 1500 rounds of mg and i still have some problem at the back :D
I have the OD green version of this bag. It actually has a smaller removable bag that attaches to the outside. The od green version does not have the velcro flaps to tame the loose straps. The clips male and female should be replaced asap. The clips are of cheap quality, but all around the bag is pretty durable and has plenty of space. Recently I used this to carry a jacket, full length side folder AKM, chicom chest rig, 3 AK magazines, 120 rounds 7.62x39, camelbak, 3 MREs. Climbed up a small mountain with this load in the pack and it was quite comfortable.
For years I've used one of the three different packs I have. I keep coming back to the one large open main compartment style. I have one with all the pockets but I found I put things in those spaces and either don't use them or forget what I have in there. The non-military pack I have is just basically falling apart. The first thing to go was the plastic zippers. I think I'm going to give this one a try. I'll pick one up within the next month or so.
Slip your axe handle through the bottom loop, then flip the handle up. Secure handle with the 2” web buckle. The bottom loop cradles the axe head. I used to add loop and web buckle to non military packs. Liked the review.
LOVE that pack! The ability to attach tools well is a great option and I love the hidden strap feature as well...hmmm got me thinkin about trying one of these
The Romanian Army backpack is the same, I own one, it's really great for the back regarding weight distribution on your back, the big problem, it's kind of heavy and it lacks molle and extra pockets.
Did anyone else notice the lack of Molle (PALS) webbing? For the price, it looks like a good pack. (I would buy one, or two) I just like my packs taller and not as wide (Like the ILBE) less chance of hitting trees when hiking in the forest. How about the Italian Military Combat Rucksack Vs the USMC ILBE with 50 pounds. that would be great !!!
seems like a similarly designed pack as the eberlestock j51 warhammer but at around/or over $300.00 it is much more frugal!!!! I simply love the warhammer pack as I own it and use it every chance i get! Any thoughts Luke or maybe you have not had your hands on the warhammer pack? I know you have reviewed some eberlestock packs in the past in fact the g1 little brother can be zipped into or outside of the warhammer! The modularity of this design is killer!
they are sold out, awesome bag, also picked up the canoe bag which fits right in the ruck waterproof option still with plenty of room., I have already used both of these and they are as good or better than some of my more expensive rucks by far.............
Luke, I believe if you multiply the measurements it ends up about a 50 liter ruck. Not including the pockets, which are about 4.4 liters each so total just shy of 60 liters is a decent guess.
NinjaPoobah man you are wrong. I have this pack and also 65 liters pack. If I put'em side by side, the 65 liters one simply disappear. The Alpini rucksack is damn huge. I think that the main compartment can be easily 80 liters. In the army they said that the total capacity of the system (big backpack + day pack) is about 120 liters at least. I've seen an 81mm mortar carried into it!
Ahoy Luke. Thanks for this review. I hope in Germany you can get it easier. Niceeeeee pack! But why do you show your ul gear in the military surplus intro? ;-) Greetings, Azze
Hi Luke! When I started following your channel the last thing I could expect was to stumble upon the review of the rucksack I myself used in the army. This review kinda made my heart soften. Thank you for that and for your excellent work. Keep going!
TheOutdoorGearReview It's already a good ten years now. I took service in the 28th Psy Ops regiment "Pavia" (and my heart is still there). Mine was the last run of the woodland camo pattern (before the army adopted the "vegetato" in 2006), but I have also an "army green" one. Of you're interested I can arrange to send it to you the green one for the sake of collecting. Let me know.
that looks a little like my Austrian rucksack, I like it but the suspenders straps are in bad shape, I want to replace them if I can. my Polish military rucksack is 75 liters, makes me think my Austrian pack is 60 liters maybe less
you really have gotten pretty buff lol. Looks like an awesome pack. I need some advice if youre wiling to give it, I live in north carolina just like you, however I live in central north carolina around the sanford area. I leave for basic training on the 23rd this month. Any ideas to have an awesome trip before I go? I was thinking pisgah for some bushcraft backpacking but im not sure, your advice is welcome :)
Hey there brother, thank you so much for your service. Basic is going to be a BIG change but you will do great I am sure. As for a bushcraft trip, Pisgah is a good choice. Of course, I don't recommend cutting down any living trees; you will have plenty of materials to work with. If you head out there, make sure to have some good maps with you as the trails aren't always the best. Enjoy buddy, good luck with everything. - Luke
It looks good Luke but will it hold as much as molly 2 russack by that I mean sleep system clothes and food , tools basically everything you need to survive if the case was to be homeless for at least a month ? Thanks in advance From Mark
Hey, Luke. Subscriber. Love your videos. Would you say that this Italian pack might solve the problem you noted in your review of the Large USA ALICE pack (which I own) of expanding outward when fully loaded and thereby stressing your back? I know you haven't filled up the Italian one to the brim yet, but do you think it better at keeping items vertical rather than ballooning outward like the Large ALICE?
Hey there Wrongway, I tell you what, I will do a versus episode putting the ALICE and the Italian packs head to head. I do think that the Italian will be the winner though in terms of comfort/back stress. We shall see. - Luke
What better waist belt would fit that pack? I put a molle belt and shoulder straps on my Alice pack. I think they call it a hellcat system or Malice pack. Made a world of difference. That waist belt looks too flimsy to distribute much weight to the hips. Especially if it was loaded out with 50 or 60 pounds.. anyone know of a better belt that would adapt to this pack?
I've heard it being referred to as a day pack but unfortunately I have no idea. I've seen one picture of it and that's it. It's really hard to find some info on this pack in general. - Luke
PraiseTheZeus it depends by the company that made yours. This rucksack doesn't have a brand. It was produced by many manufacturers because the army marked a tender every time a new lot was needed and you know... The lowest price won. I've seen people using this pack for 20 years and at the same time I've seen the same model broken after one week. It depends. You must be lucky haha.
In this 2015 footage, the Folgore Brigade is still indifferently using this along with the new "vegetato" pattern. ruclips.net/video/_Vo23v8M_ho/видео.html

Reminds me of a Turtle Back with the width & depth! Like this one!! Thanks Luke!
My pack came today. Pack is in great shape. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to giving it a try.

StrikerITA where did you buy the detachable bag? Thanks
Now that is my kind of pack looks like it’s very comfortable even when loaded
Thanks Luke for a great review
Congrats on the new sponsor. Your reviews are great.
I used that in the Italian Army, and you dont know how is hated that pack :D
Oh yeah? Please share some info and insight on it brother.
Thanks
- Luke

1500 rounds of 5.56 is no joke, can't imagine if it was 7.62! Respect!

Very interesting! Please, can you make a quick comparison between this and the ILBE, considering the ILBE "empty" itself is over 8 lbs.
This one weights around 2 kg or 4 pounds empty.

Thank you Luke! I will look at it!
Thank you Luke😺👍
The straps on the top pocket are really cool. Shame it doesn't have a better waist belt.
this pack is sweet!
I would also look at a LK-35 if your looking for a bushcraft pack. You can probably get one for cheaper too.
Thr front park is available at sportsman's guide I believe and ild kill to see you do a video of the pack
Just received this ruck, it is outstanding..............
Hell Yeah! Enjoy it Ben. - Luke
they are sold out, awesome bag, also picked up the canoe bag which fits right in the ruck waterproof option still with plenty of room., I have already used both of these and they are as good or better than some of my more expensive rucks by far.............
I like military surplus Wednesday.
It just seems so huge! What are people carrying now when "roughing it?"
Luke, I believe if you multiply the measurements it ends up about a 50 liter ruck. Not including the pockets, which are about 4.4 liters each so total just shy of 60 liters is a decent guess.

Tziga Vertov not worries, I just took a guess with multiplying the measurement and converting to liters. It was a guess
NinjaPoobah OK man, no probs ;) bye
3660 ci=59.98 liters
Luke, no Owl pillow in the pack? ;) Great review...
Hahha Oh yeah, I need to steal them once again to add some spice to my marriage. haha - Luke
Ahoy Luke. Thanks for this review. I hope in Germany you can get it easier. Niceeeeee pack! But why do you show your ul gear in the military surplus intro? ;-) Greetings, Azze
Even with military gear, I want to go light as possible.
- Luke
Thanks!
Seems like a perfect pack to me
This pack is very similar to Fryallraven Helags 40L pack that is hard to find.
Hi Luke!

Hey there brother!
You used one of these in the Army? That's great! How long ago was that?
- Luke

Prefer my British army rucksack it hasn't failed in 14 years still looks new
that looks a little like my Austrian rucksack, I like it but the suspenders straps are in bad shape, I want to replace them if I can. my Polish military rucksack is 75 liters, makes me think my Austrian pack is 60 liters maybe less
my Polish pack is frameless but has a sternum strap, my Austrian pack doesn't have sternum or waist straps and is also frameless

Thanks in advance

I still prefer your Italian Vegatato pack, that thing was badass. Do you still have it?
The vegetata one is the new one! this thing here is super old, in italy it cost around 20 euro
What years was this pack in service? - Luke
this was in service until 2005 if I'm not mistaken. The new one is thinner but longer.
please do a review on the 5.11 72 rush
SlyGuy but they all suck. I want to see a person who can actually review the bag properly.
Awesome pack!!! Does it pull on ur shoulders like most pack do??? Just wondering!!!
So far so good with my testing. I'm going to up the weight to see how she handles. - Luke
there's also a romanian army dpm version

How does the comfort/weight distribution compare to an alice pack?
Sold out of everything, almost.
Their office and warehouses were located in Paradise,CA, which were burn to the ground due to wild fires last year. They're slowly getting back up.
What better waist belt would fit that pack? I put a molle belt and shoulder straps on my Alice pack. I think they call it a hellcat system or Malice pack. Made a world of difference. Do you know where to buy the attachable pouch for those extra buckles? Also, how water resistant is this pack?
I haven't personally seen the attachable pouch except for in one picture.
The pack is water resistant but definitely not waterproof. - Luke
where is the lasagne pocket?
nice one
what's the name od the additional bag that could be attached ? where could I buy it? great video
I've heard it being referred to as a day pack but unfortunately I have no idea. I've seen one picture of it and that's it. It's really hard to find some info on this pack in general. - Luke
are the shoulder strap and waist belt removable? thanks
Where do I get the removeable day pack?? I've looked everywhere... HELP!
I wish that I could help but I haven't seen it anywhere. If I do, I'll shoot you a message. - Luke
Where's the pack made???
Not really sure, there is very little information on these packs available. - Luke
What about durability ?
So far so good brother.

Thanks Brian. - Luke
They won't ship to Texas. PLENTY of others that do. Their loss.
