I was very happy when I heard about this pedal, I have seen multiple demos and reviews and you did the best review I have found, great work on showing what the pedal is and what is not, Excellent review and playing
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew this one was going to be good! :) You definitely did not disappoint! Just discovered your channel today as this video was posted to my youtube feed. I've been watching a lot of videos about the x-100 lately as I'm on the waiting list until I receive mine from sweetwater. I have to tell you that your video is the best I've seen regarding this pedal. Not to mention that you have the absolute HOLY MECCA of a rig behind you! :) I'm thankful to still own some rockman equipment (Sustainor 100A, Chorus/delay, floorboard and 3 headphone amps). As a child of the 1980s it is a sound that has never left me, and I still love to this day. The tones that you got in this video sound phenomenal! You gained a sub, and like number 51 is from me! I greatly enjoyed all 40 minutes :).
THE X100 pedal review I have been waiting for! Thanks David! I have been wanting to get the Ultimatum for years, and after watching your video I finally found one on Reverb this morning. Can't wait to get it on my pedal board, right next to the SR&D Acoustic pedal. Rock on, brother. : )
Awesome collection. I used to have an original X100 and a Soloist. My favorite SR&D that I sold years ago was the rack mounted XPR... I think that's what it was called. I've always loved the 70's MXR pedals. It looks like MXR did a great job.
david thank you so much great job with the demo, sounds great to, love the fender amp, the pedals are brillilant to your set up ,very little noise ,i do like the new mxr rockman will be getting mine soon, ,please next time lets hear the new pedal with rockman echo, thanks again realy enjoyed, bob cedo and mxr did a great job, im looking forward to running my through the pa in stereo, THANKS AGAIN VIDEO WAS GREAT SOUNDING.
Nice video! Been using Rockma stuff since 80s. Actually had one of the three way cabs but it was to big to store, take out to use so I sold it stupidly! Still have my A1250 but had it put in bigger custom made 2/12 cab. Keep up the videos, you have amazing collection!
Live not love😂. Hey do you know what speaker came with the A1250? Mine had a Eminence when I got my combo years ago but speaker blew. I have heard they came with Celestions but I think mine was stock with Eminence?
Im only saying this to help you out. If you are going to make a video showcasing pedals where tone is important, you really should mic up the amp or at least turn the amp toward the mics of whatever you are using to record it and do some gain staging. guitar amps are very directional (Im sure you already know this), so when you record like this it introduces a lot of mids making it sound way more muddy than it really is sitting in front of the amp. I myself learned this a long time ago playing live shows from using conventional pa systems and guitar amps. Not so much a problem with bass cabs as those freq's travel in a 360 pattern essentially. That other rockman pedal sounds pretty good btw
@@perfectsound500 It's all good brother, You can get an adapter and run a real mic through your phone that would help a lot. If you are gonna mic the amp I would suggest an Audix i5 mic it beats the pants off the industry standard shure sm57
David! I’ve been seeing so many reviews lately, but I’ve been hoping that you’d do one! Thank you! I appreciate you comparing them the way that you did. I have both the ACG and the Ultimatum, as well as two X100’s, and multiple half rack units (many refurbished by you). I have one question, and it’s concerning something that you didn’t really address: why do you reckon MXR didn’t include the Echo setting? I’m really quite disappointed that they left it out. Any thoughts? I’d appreciate your speculation! Walk on! Jamie Schmotzer
@@jamieschmotzer Jamie…the original Echo circuit was (by today’s standards) kind of cheesy. Because MXR has a whole line of delays, they focused on the heart of the matter. That said, because it is a stereo pedal, it can be fed into a stereo delay or even the Rockman Stereo Echo. I DO believe an MXR Stereo Echo pedal would be fantastic.
The ultimatum sounds much better, at least for my taste. I have sustainor from the 90’s with the double IC chips, and to my ears the ultimatum sounds much better. Plus the Ultimatum will sound great with a tube amp. Not so with the modules.
I've owned an original Rockman Ultimatum pedal as well as a clone (from the Pedal PCB "Proposition Distortion" board), and I found both to be a bit muddy/choked sounding. I'm a much bigger fan of the Rockmodules, particularly the Distortion Generator. I recently got an MXR X100 and also prefer that to the Ultimatum sound.
@@mattsguitarstuff7564 The Ultimatum is an interesting pedal. Depending on the rig, it can go either way. To my ears, I prefer the saturation qualities of the UDG. But, our tastes all differ. In fact, I love them all…just some more than others. Since I use XPR’s, Rockmodules, and the Rockman stomp boxes…it really depends on my mood, my fingers, and my ears.
The ultimatum is awesome but the rockman pedal is dead on Boston. I’ve yet to hear a better sounding overdrive pedal than my Strymon Riverside though. But for the perfect Boston sound, the Rockman is worth every penny
Where did you put it on your signal chain, I’ve played around with it and I could only use it in certain ways. I’ve had trouble finding a go spot for it on my board.
@ ok, it comes set to mono correct? I just felt like I was fighting between a really nice clean tone with the built in chorus to an unusable tone at the distortion setting with my other pedals.
@@brandonprice3664 it comes set to mono. If you take the back off there is a small dip switch where you can change it to stereo. I’m running it in stereo with a 1/4” TRS Y cable that splits out to two 1/4” I put those into input 1 and 2 of my DAW interface.

So are Rockman stacks an entire abandonment of vacuum tube technology? If so, this means Tom was an early adopter of Solid State.
Absolutely! Tom’s aim was to emulate tube tone and punch with solid state technology. He was a pioneer…but his sound was all his own.

The mid range is what there all about. Does the new box have a headphone out
It does not, although with a stereo output jack, I guess it’s worth a try.
