Sly and Robbie - David Letterman Show 1985 Sly Dunbar - Drums, Robbie Shakespeare - Bass, Paul Shaffer - Keyboards, Will Lee - Keyboard, Sid McGinnis -
I was fortunate enough to meet Sly & Robbie after a show in Seattle in September 2009, when I was just twenty years old. Robbie Shakespeare in particular was really special to me, since he was one of the main reasons I became a bass player. Both guys couldn’t have been more gracious and easygoing. Even at 1:00 AM, they made time to chat with everyone who came to meet them.
Every album I've ever heard that had Sly & Robbie as the rhythm section has been brilliant. From Black Uhuru to Joe Cocker (Sheffield Steel), from Bob Dylan to the Taxi tours and albums. Horrible news that Robbie's gone.
Seen them many times over the years and in "84" while bopping around Kingston, I passed by the Zinc Fence Studio and Sly just happened to step outside for a break and I kicked it with him for a few minutes. The last time I saw them together was when they were backing up Bitty McClean in LA.
I've always loved oldies. I didn't grow up in that Era but I've always admired the work of these legends. They were treading and going viral before it became a thing. They helped to pave the way for upcoming reaggae artists. Love these geniuses
The 1985 hybrid drum kit!!!! Love it. This song is very emblematic of the 80’s Reggae, the synth sounds, the square rhythms very “cocaine vibe” as opposed to the 70’s herb based w/ horn section
@@davenorris4914 great performance, love the song. Never heard of it before watching this. I have it saved in special RUclips folder for jamming along to with my Roland TD-17/DTX560 Frankenstein drum kit.
@@ramelolivez63 I was born in 1985 the same year I believe this video was on the late night show. I watched a reverb video that talked about the importance of a certain model of Casio synthesizer that became the go to and emblematic synth sound of 80’s reggae. It also talked about the large shift in the island culture from the 70’s-80’s and how a big part of that was the big shift in drug culture. Burning Spear/Gregory Issacs have several interviews where they talk about the drug culture shaping the music culture and vise versa.
I saw this when it first aired. I have it on Vhs someplace. I forgot how tight these guys were. This was when they were working with Mick on She's the Boss. Sly and Robbie were the shit!
No one can beat Robbie and Sly on an INFLUENCE level!!! From Black UHURU , GREGORY... tooooo many to list on, and on,and before! The REAL KINGS of BEATS.
Saw them in '83 backing black Uhuru at USC and again in 2009 at the house of blues on sunset in Hollywood. It was at that show I found out Robbie could sing. He had a very light falsetto that floated on butterfly wings . I was stunned . R.I.P
I think you can IMOP: Im not stuck in a time warp. But i do miss their earlier jaunts . I have enjoyed Scientist Dub albums with the Roots Radics more in recent times. Shame on me
The musical notes may be simple, however when arranged properly each instrument builds the groove that is the genius of sly and Robbie , if you not grooving or dancing to that you don’t have a pulse
When you find the groove. Rhythm, "riddim, riddeem!!". Like the vocalist said to me at a gig one time while dubbing it up, bass and drums, "sit on it, no fills, just hold it tight". Sly and Robbie in action here.
@@johnmiller8281 I am pretty certain its a dub version of #WhatisLife their Grammy Award wining hit of the approximate time. See wiki Black Uhuru en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Uhuru for good start on Catalog then see also Direct Jamaican lines for more complete listings and on dub also look for Sly and Robbie's "Taxi "line of Releases. As you may know already Dub is instrumental focused Reggae.
A good 'vocal version' of this 'Hot you Hot' ..is available on 'Wanted - dread or alive' by Peter Tosh. Also on Sly & Robbie 'hot you hot' compilation on island records..
Pretty strange that they chose to play 2-chord rhythm track with no singers or instrumental solo parts. It's not a hard thing for Sly and Robbie fans, or reggae fans, to accept and enjoy. But a national US audience that's mostly unfamiliar with this approach to music? That's a hard sell.
Actually it is a bit dull sounding .but it's hard to get 'bottom end range' from TV- but really they were producers/backing musicians ...possibly best experienced when they were backing Black Uhuru..
Here, paying my respects to Robbie Shakespeare. RIP.
The Original Bass Player On CONCRETE JUNGLE ( yep ) the first song, of the first, Marley & The Wailers Official Record

Sounds like something i would say. Very True.
Sly was sitting in on Steve Jordan's kit there, augmented by a few Simmons pads. Jordan moved over to guitar!!!
