"It's just a song!" Me: Get out of my head get out of my head get out of my head get out of my head get out of my head get out of my head get out of my head
I feel like this video does have a meaning! For me because this song comes before the song, Gimme Love (in the album), it shows his meaningless, carefree life on earth. This is shown in the many shots of doing meaningless or mundane things, like walking through gas station, stuffing his face with donuts/drinking alcohol (shallow pleasures in life) or missing the basketball shot. This version of Joji to me seems depressive and showing a fake life of fun as a young adult but he really feels like nothing he does is of any meaning. We start to see the origins for his aspirations for the stars and escapism while he is in the "rocket ship" shopping cart, throwing the donuts behind him as if he wants to just throw away his life on earth and leave. This video gives the motive or reason to leave earth, while in the following Gimme Love video it shows Joji with his new found goal of getting into space and how he goes about it. (when he finally gets into space, the depression doesn't leave, but comes back as now its just him and his thoughts Success ≠ Happiness) I think this video may feel out of place with the other Nectar music videos due to it's less story based and more random general vibe type of storytelling but I think it fits perfectly as how he perceives his life on earth as being dull, shallow and void of real meaning. Anyways, those were just my thoughts! :)
Also to agree with y’all, smithereens has the most moving songs to me, they have sooooo much more power behind their lyrics, their instrumentals and beats just hit my heart so much harder. But nonetheless all of his music just hits a certain way with me. They always have, idk if it’s because of the background that I have with him or what. His music is just so heavenly❤
not lot of people know, but this music video IS connected to the other nectar music videos, it is not very obvious, but it has some symbolism in some parts

I do like Smithereens better but thats because I tend to like more emotional music, and Nectar is more chill/hype at the same time somehow
Please have your mom react to Joji’s Chloe Burbank Album 🙏🏼 !!! It’s worth the listen and it’s his most underrated work from the late 2010s !!!
