It was 1997 and the winner was Goeffery Rush for the movie Shine, which was also an amazing performance. So, maybe less outrageous than simple circumstance. Like, if he lost to George Clooney as Batman, THAT would be outrageous. And... Billy Bob won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for this film.
@@hhiippiittyy yep, just goes to show that there is always someone better out there and Billy Bob set the bar so high from this role that only someone as talented as Geoffrey Rush could ever beat him.
I'm sure that was because they realized Billy Bob was too good for an academy so they just left him without one since they didn't have an award for that great of acting sequence I guess 🤷♂️
Truly is an incredible transformation from his actual personality, what a rare and unique actor, I loved this movie, gems like this one come along very rarely.
I love all of the body language he uses in this scene. Usually he plays the character as mostly stoic and soft. But here, when he's describing certain events, you can tell it's distressing to recount them just by the way he moves or closes his eyes. An excellent performance.
We all strive to get 100% on whatever we do but, Billy Bob got 1,000% for acting beyond the greatest imagination. I feel he killed it to be worthy of the Academy Award's best actor performance throughout the movie. Talk about nailing it.

Not sure how they ever let him out ,, he point blank tells them he would do it again the same way .. but then we would not have a Movie
@Revolvin Goatt I don't think anyone is making fun of mentally handicapped people, they are judging and analyzing the character, of course. He violently attacked and killed his mother and some male she was having sex with, that is deeply disturbing, at any age and regardless any mental handicap, it surely goes beyond that. Perhaps he was rehabilitated in those year's inside the institution and murdered again for other reasons, maybe moral.
I always skip that part when I watch this movie. I'm a father and it gets to me too much. Same with the opening scene to the movie Law Abiding Citizen.
It’s unfortunate Billy Bob Thornton wasn’t more widely known when this was released. The transformation and incredible delivery would have received greater recognition than it did, even though it received a lot, had that been the case IMO.
What do you mean? This movie is what put Billy Bob Thornton on the map and got him roles after this. He won the oscar for writing the screenplay for this movie and he was nominated for best actor for this movie. After that, he played more overweight roles, until he lost alot of weight for Armageddon and started getting more leading man roles.
@@theclaybeartravels3596 well said. I acknowledge all of your points. I think my comment was directed more towards the best actor award specifically. I should have been more clear. Thanks.

I think it's the blade on a scythe ... which is what was used to hew tall grasses, including the harvesting of wheat (note that little boy's family name is "Wheatley"). So, the connection between a Sling/Scythe Blade and a Lawnmower Blade is pretty clear. 👍
