- There is no such a thing as Right or Wrong in Sashiko. However, I am so passionate (and somewhat frustrated) that I want to share the style of Sashiko we practice. As always, I have reasons for my passion. This is a video of explaining the 4 reasons why I prefer the Sashiko method we practice.
Many ask me, “How can I make stitches so even?”
I often share in the Sashiko Class with my proverb, “Don’t try to make it even”.
Sashiko is more than just a stitching for decorative purposes.
I hope you can learn the Sashiko we have been practicing by watching the video. Also, it would be great if you could consider taking the Online Sashiko Class as well.

This is like the way I teach handwriting to kids. Being mindful, enjoying the process and avoiding preprinted letters words or stitches. Teaching through showing, learning through watching and making own experiences. Finding the right position and again enjoying the process. Being mindful stitch by stitch and- when the result is usable: how great is that. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Ah and this thought came into my mind. We don‘t live in poverty like the developers of these stitches but we will experience a new kind of poverty in future because we cannot afford to spend and throw away so much material because we must stop ruining this beautiful planet.

It never occurred to me the dashes were meant to indicate stitch size, it was just a stitching line. I didn’t need to worry about covering the marks, they go away with ironing.
I just stitched straight lines on an old tea towel until I felt my rhythm was right and my stitches were even.
The sashiko needle can go through denim?! Is the needle tip flat or round? I have a canvas needle that I've been using to mend my jeans but I don't like the needle because it feels it slices through the fabric rather than moving through it.
"Our" Sashiko needles can go thorugh denim. I do it, and many other students of mine do the same.

With your technique you can't do the cross stitch style right? Like a row of + together?
I think you can stitch - - - - - horizontally and then - - - - vertically over it. This works for bigger areas and of course not for small picture motives. I think it helps to see the whole fabric geometrically.good luck and have fun :-)
