- My review of the focal 836V speakers. The best value for the money if you know how to tame it's metal base tweeter. Highly recommended. I loved it so much I had 2 pairs! I have now moved on but it will always be one of my favorite speaker.
Equipment used
Exasound e28 dac
Bel Canto Pre 2
Bel Canto 1000s mono bloc power amps
Yter speaker Cables
Siltech Princess interconnect
Transparent Super MM2 RCA
Love my Focal 836V's for the last 7 years I've owned them. While some may call them bright, I think what I like about them is the way they separate highs, mids, and lows. It gives them a dynamic sound, and since I primarily listen to rock and roll, they do it very well. You can also turn the treble down a bit, if they're too bright for you. I've only been able to demo the Electras a few times, and in not so great rooms. I get the urge to upgrade every now and then, but only see the 1028s and 1038s for $5,000+ where I live. The 836s are so good, I can't justify spending $4,000+ more to get the electras. Maybe I need a better demo to convince me. I run mine off an old McIntosh MX 134 theater processor, and a parasound 200/wpc amp. Still gives me goose bumps at times.
The 1028 are not $4k better performing than the 836V. The 836V is excellent and is definitely one of my favorite speakers and I have owned 20+ pair. I will post up my last video 836v VS 1028 at one point and give you my opinion on their difference.
I'll keep an eye out for the video. In my basement/theater room I run BIG old Def Tech BP-2000s. While good, the 836s are much better for music in the midrange and treble. Been a long time since I've demoed any speakers, but I've heard quite a few > $5,000 that just don't sound as good as the 836s. I heard the Sopra 2s about a year ago, and while good, there is no way I could justify $12 to $13 thousand for them.
The other brand I would love to demo is Salk Sound. The wood and cabinetry work is to die for, but I just can't buy something that expensive without hearing it first.
I have had my 836v speakers for around 8 years now and I love them still to this day. Only other speakers that have mad me feel that way are the dynaudio contour 60's. Very very detailed speaker. But for the price I will stick to my 836v's that still give me goose bumps and play very loud with no problems.
@@ThomasAndStereo where is this 1028 vs 836v video? cant find it on your channel. in short which is better?
Had the luck to get a pair for 1.500€ total in 2008. Sitting on the complete 7.1 set for a few years too now. Amp/Electronics is definitely a thing. Those bad boys fried one big Onkyo TX-NR905 😅
Hey Thomas, I bought the 836V's but I still need an amp to drive them with. Do you have any recommendations for them? I probably want to buy an used amp.
Thank you. You persuaded me. I'm going to buy the 836V tomorrow.
I just replaced my Sonus Faber 3.0 Venere with Focal 836V and what a difference!!! I owned Focal 826V before but 836V is soooo much better. Everything is nice and clear. I didn’t want to get rid of Sonus Faber because I thought they were very good but even my wife said that Focals sound so much better. My setup now is:
Focal 836V front, Klipsch RC-62 II center, Marantz AV7702 preamp, Emotiva XPA-5 gen3, B&W ASW750 as front sub, B&W ASW700 as rear sub. My room is approx 24’x12’. So yes, if you can’t afford 10k Focal speakers just get 836V’s.
Yes, it's very good for the price. Congrats Jack
I used to research so many brands of speaker. I own the Chora 826 model and have been content ever since.
I know I will not consider anything but Focal in the future.😊
I have 826E Japon Edition. Yes, Chorus Series sound harsh and
metallic due to the tweeter. Young people (especially listening only rock)like such sound but old people will dislike. To make it calm, remove tweeter protect grill and add super tweeter may deserves consideration. The cheapest way will select Speaker Cable to control harsh sound. I think high price cable is not necessary.
I watched this video last month, but after going from a 60WPC Dayton APA-102 to a 80WPC Nuforce STA-200 with my Focal Chorus 705 I had to come back and co-sign about harshness and equipment pairing. With the Nuforce the bass is so much fuller, and they've gone from sounding dry like my M-Audio BX5s to very detailed without being fatiguing.
Thanks for dropping in again and share your experience. Yes, the amp is very important and glad that it made a difference for you.
Super informative.. already in love with focals...Great video
Thanks, positive comments and like keeps me motivated to make videos :) appreciate it.
My pleasure Bro
hello Thomas, Great sounding speakers. I actually have the chance to buy either this model Chorus 836V or the Profile 928 at almost the same price. Any suggestions on which should I go with and if you can give me some reasons it would be much appreciated.
What are soft cables 🤔
How much are they when they first came out? Is $1600 for a used pair worth it?
The Focal Aria 936 might be a good replacement and the tweeter isn't harsh on the Aria (or the new 700 series).
I am curious about the 936 too. I might get a pair in the next few weeks, if I do, then I will post up a review shortly after that.
How does a pair of Devialet Phantom Golds hold up compared to these focals? I hear the phantom Golds have the sound, power and quality of a setup 4x more expensive. I've heard a pair of phantom Golds and they sound incredible.
I never heard the Gold version so really can't compare.
I am pretty new to speaker world, quick question 2X826v 2X806V 1CC800 VS 2X926. Which speakers should I get for 2200 CAD 5 speakers or 2 speaker? Any recommendation for PERAMP and AMP? I care about vocal and HIFI, 90% music listen
In your example the 5 speaker would be great for the 5.1 experience. One issue I see is that you will be lacking bass. I had the 926 and 836 before and felt the 836 had more bass. It is very bright these speakers, have you ever listened to them before? If you are spending 90% on music and you sure you want focal. The 926 will be better. If you are not one of the audiophile who listen deep into recording , 836+ a good sub will probably be better.
@@ThomasAndStereo Thank you so much for your response. Cheers!
Hey Thomas Is like to know What would you recommend the 926 or 836 for music and movies?
Since you asked about the 1028 in the other comment, get the 1028 instead.
@@ThomasAndStereo ok thanks
Hey Thomas I've got a question for you I have the S..M.S.L DAC and it has a setting of mini slow or fast witch one of the setting is better I think fast seem to be the best and I do hear a difference with the DAC of course anyway would like to her your input please
Hi Andrew, I never come across a dac that has this kind of setting. I google it and see the company does make a few different dacs. If I were you, I would create a forum post on avsforum.com or www.head-fi.org/ and ask people who own the actual unit to share their experience. At the same time, ask how their setup is so you have a better comparison.
Thomas & Stereo well thank you Thomas I believe it's some kind of filter I'm not a 100% on that I've been doing some listening and I can honestly say it does sound a little nicer and with Streaming it really made a difference I tried it on my marantz CD player and because it's a lower end CD player it sounded really nice and it's a older model it's a 5 disc player...thank you again the DAC is the S.M.S.L M8A dsd HI-RES that's the model number and I would also like to say I really enjoy your videos I love the supper high-end stuff your reviewing keep up the good work
How would the Focal 836v pair with McIntosh ma series integrated amps? Would this still leave them on the “bright”side?
The focal will be bright with most amps out there. The mcintosh, the older series is a decent choice because they focus more on being musical. The newer series focus more on the new sound. I had the MC47+MC452 with the Focal Kanta and it's ok but leaning towards the bright side.
Thomas & Stereo would you say the 836v is more or less bright than the aria 936? I’m torn between chorus 726, used 836, and aria 936. My audio rom is on the smaller side, 10x20, and I don’t want it over powering at moderate levels.
Nah, they are about the same. I had the 836 and 926. I would even say the 926 might be a tad brighter but the 926 I had was not broken in yet. The 836 had more bass than the 926 but less refined.
Thomas & Stereo thanks for the insight, I’ve found your video reviews quite helpful.
The sound of the FOCAL 836V paired with my McIntosh MA 6900 is absolutely PERFECT... I am sorry to say, but this speakers put my Klipsch Forte II to shame
Thomas, which cables do you recommend with the Focal 836’s and the Bryston 4B sst2?
No silver cables. Cables that are not bright. I used to be on a budget and came across the signal cable that worked pretty ok.
Thomas & Stereo thanks for your reply. I will source out the cables you recommended.
Check out the forums, it will give you more opinions.
Thomas & Stereo I will check out Canuck audio mart as well.
Yes, good idea. I think you might be better to put the money on the preamp or dac, usually speaker cable is the last as it has the lowest return. Its just a bit better than standard cable?
I was looking at buying this speakers a week ago. But once I saw that you can not bi-amp them I lost interest on them. I really wanted them, but there is no reason why any speaker with that many woofers shouldn't be bi-ampable. Oh why did Focal do that!!??
My understanding of focal is that they make everything in house. So unlike other companies, there is no compromise when it comes to woofer and crossover. That is one of the reason why they are very efficient. (In theory) so no need to bi amp to get good performance from them. Usually I would bi amp if it is not efficient. A very musical low power amp for the top range and a very powerful amp for the low range. In this case, in theory, they are efficient so no need a powerful amp to drive them. However, in real life use, I recommend a high power amp. If you never hear this speaker before, go audition it, it might change your mind.
Thomas & Stereo the thing is that I have a tube amp that makes 40 wpc that I really like and I have a class D amp that has loads of power but does not have that "refined" sound. So, driving a speaker with that many woofers with 40 wpc would be a shame. I'm not giving up my tube amp so that's the reason I think this speakers won't work for me.
100% agree. I know exactly what you mean. Sadly I think Dynaudio has the same issue.
Well to me that’s a very bad reason poor reason not to buy the speakers
This was a good speaker. The new Aria is very different-too refined. The 836 had good bass. This was a punchy speaker. With the new Araha, Focal seemed to go for a different sound. I am not a fan of the new Aria as a result. Bass is worse, excitement is gone.
Yes, the new Aria goes for speed instead. This have more heft to the bass.
Had $10K worth of focal speakers installed in my car...big mistake. Wish I would have gone with something else. The focal flax are too harsh, my ears actually hurt at medium levels with them...incredibly high fidelity and clear as light, but harsh and sibilant
Yeah, the brightness problem...I am sure it can be 'adjusted' but I don't know anything about car audio.
