You guys are doing fantastic job on this LJ .The GTR and XU1 did not come with radios ,Only optional extra. In saying that I also have a orange 1972 GTR. When you guys finish torana it will be better than the factory. Keep up the fanstic job.
they just used filler over the hole 🕳️. So many dodgy jobs done to this car and it’s been so good to see it get properly repaired. Top work Gents and looking forward to the next episode. 💪 You Boys have been amazing thanks for showing us what’s gone into this car so far. Have a good week keep it real keep it steel 👍
The XU1 is coming along very nicely. My XU1 was about 5 years old & the front screen had to be replaced ,the vehicle was always garaged. Under the windscreen rubber, there was also corrosion, I had to weld to repair. I went to Eagers to purchase a new rubber a guy in spare parts told the original rubbers were made of a reactive material, causing the corrosion issue. The replacement was of a different grade of material to prevent this problem. It made me think I have seen a few since with the same problem. Cheers guys.
It’s coming along very nice now boys the owner will be so happy. Im not sure how these guys can bog over things like this. It’s a real dodgy shop that did that. Hope we can get merch soon and i feel watching your show is so positive. Its always good it very positive. Keep it reel keep it steel 👌👍💪
That roof panel is easily in the best condition, compared to what else we’ve seen on the car. I doubt the antennae hole would have surprised anyone, but the vacuum hose, on the mirka kit is worth its weight, just in the time saved in cleaning up aloe. And you wouldn’t be blowing out multi coloured boogers for days after 😏 My only question is, why did you apply primer before welding up the hole?
Your spot on @honestpat7789 and the reason we epoxy primed the roof is we never let bare metal sit any longer then 20 mins one its ready for etch or primer. Thanks @honestpat7789 for watching the show and leaving your comment.👌
Turret aeriels were popular in 70s i had one on my hk monaro not factory also we used to pop the rear vision mirror when we went to the drivein cheers Mick tbar
Hi guys I'm Vaughan I been watching this build from the start I look forward to the next episode keep up the awesome work you guys are fantastic I would love to restore my old reliable vn calais but I can't afford to do it anyway keep it up.
Hi @VaughanKoch-yb9wd thanks for watching the build its awesome too have guys like you follow the whole way. Hope you can do your vn one day in the future. Thanks for taking time to leave a comment.👍
Another great episode again lads. I assume you primed the roof prior to welding was just to seal the steel to prevent surface rust? Im guessing a time factor or lack of to weld the roof antenna hole? looking forward to the next one cheers!
Hi @scottyr6033 yes we always like to epoxy up seal the steel once we are ready. We weld up the hole after the turret is primed. Thanks for watching @scottyr6033
Fantastic build guys can’t wait to see it finished! I’ve watched most of the videos and keep noticing Chateau Mauve overspray in areas it would only get from factory as seen @ 12:14 under the turret in this video, and on the door frame under trim area in previous a video. Is this a genuine XU1 or a replica? Either way keep up the great work!!
I reckon that you may be on to something there, the inside of the turret is all sprayed out in black too, instead of the colour overspray. It's very common for these things to happen, especially xu1's.
The silicon and sponge on the cross member I don't believe is factory. Normally the factory sound deadening would take up any slop but it looks as if most of the deadening has been removed. Let me know if you need a photo of what it should look like.
G'day fellas , just thought I'd drop you a quick message about the centre roof aerial in the orange Torrie . No , it was not a factory option . Back in the day when us younger blokes used to install these aerials , the common method was to drop down the interior light fitting , and drill the hole above the interior light . This meant that the aerial used to sit further forward towards the front windscreen rubber resulting in the aerial looking just right for location . For some reason the centre roof aerial mounting hole in the orange Torrie was done further rearwards . This would have resulted in the aerial looking odd with it sitting more towards the middle of the roof . Also , with the method I described how we used to do it , you did not have to undo the roof lining .
G'day again fellas , after reading a few of the other comments that was posted about roof aerial , I realised what I had said was incorrect and that , and the other comments were correct . That is , the mirror was what was removed and the hole drilled above its location , not the interior light . If it was done above the interior light , the aerial would have been positioned more rearwards resulting in it looking a little odd , just like your orange Torrie . Anyways , keep up the fantastic work you are doing . I am picking up a lot of useful tips from the gun crew at Adams for my own Torrie that's waiting for its long awaited make over . How long did you ask , try about 35 years waiting in the corner of my garage . You know how it is , got to get the priorities in order . House , marriage , cancer battles , parents with physical disability and dementia , etc , etc . But I will get there and relive my youth again with the car from my teenage years . 👍👍
Hey @bradc6977 not always I like to adjust it to the sweet spot. If that makes sense. sometimes it welds little different at times with copper under it.
Coming out of Harry Firth smash repairs if memory serves me the turret aerial came fab standard in the 2 door ford escort story around radio reception was the higher the aerial the better the reception mind you this was back before they put suppressors standard on plug leads.but the Torana Arial were on the L/H/G closer to the motor hence that horrible wizzing should when you rev the car. Then the centre Arial became that must go to have of the late 70s early 80 back when surfing pot smoking hippies loved the sandman P van ah yes I remember those beach parties well so you didn't get the sand rash when you met the love of your stoned life the back of your van was home away from home now all the little Shirley's book a hotel cry babies 😅
This has become my favourite channel by far. Cheers lads! Masters at work.
Thank you @Jakethemuss35 we appreciate the awesome comment and support.

Thank you for the info and taking time to watch the build @jamesm5100
I remember the old man putting a aerial on his white EH panel van above the windscreen looked cool give it the shark look back in early 90s

Thanks for watching the show @Luvcars360
Turret aeriels were popular in 70s i had one on my hk monaro not factory also we used to pop the rear vision mirror when we went to the drivein cheers Mick tbar
Hi @mickmurray2977 thanks for that we always appreciate these cool replies. 👍 How times have changed.
Not a factory option, which has already been mentioned. The aerial hole in my LJ was above the mirror mount plate. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the info! c cheers @warrenmarshall3134 we appreciate the comment.

The roof aerial is definitely not factory, if a radio was optioned the aerial was fitted to the left front guard about 6” from the back of the guard.
@1farmgate thanks for leaving that with us and watching the show mate 👍
Adamson Auto Body - Great job as always fellas. What size wire did you use when tig welding those repairs, looks like you used some mig wire?
Hi sorry for late reply we been flat. I used mig wire on the turret. Thanks for watching the show we appreciate the comment.
Ron here Love the tig welding bite and finish

This car is going to be a magnificent XU1 when it’s finished.
Was there a fight as to whose side aerial hole was located?
@wheels8732 hahahaha mate if only the camera was rolling all day u could see the behind scenes lol. Thanks for the comment and watching the show 👍
That’s some very tidy work today boys, another great video to start the week on the right track. 👊👍💪👌
Hi @colinmiles9390 thanks mate its getting there now we appreciate you watching and commenting on this build 👌
Great video.
Thank you @phillipcara3232 for the comment and support.
They was not a factory thing but a dealer could have them fitted for you,,, other than that you would do them your self. Cheers
Thanks for leaving a comment and watching the build @user-qo9uc6jt4j

Why didn't you just prime quarter at say time? Save time and no joins in primer. Each to their own. Cant wait to see colour go on 👍
Hi @alanjones99 we would have mate we just been busy doing other job as well.
The silicon and sponge on the cross member I don't believe is factory. Normally the factory sound deadening would take up any slop but it looks as if most of the deadening has been removed. Let me know if you need a photo of what it should look like.
Hi @Th-Inc thank you and will do. Thanks for leaving a comment and watching the show. 👌
I love da sander with vacuum I couldn't go back to one with out vacuum
They are a great set up we feel the same way. @chrisoo8998 thanks for watching 👍

when your tig welding the hole in the roof, do you always have the tungsten so short? it seemed really short?
Hey @bradc6977 not always I like to adjust it to the sweet spot. If that makes sense. sometimes it welds little different at times with copper under it.
I hope the guys that did all the bad repairs back in the day are watching and feel the shame for all the work they did to these cars
Everyone used to fit those roof aerials, some wouldn't even connect them.
@65cj55 hahah they must have been the cool thing for sure back then, Thanks for leaving a comment and watching the show.
