Once upon a time I was an assistant principal at Refugio Elementary School and while on bus duty one day, I witnessed Coach Herring do the following: One of our elementary students was going to be picked up late from school because his parents had a flat tire outside of Victoria. The student was crying quite a bit and we all tried to do our best to console him. Coach Herring heard about what was going on and drove to the elementary school at about 3:45 PM, right before football practice. He hit a knee in front of the student and asked him if he wanted to be one of his assistant coaches during practice for the day while he waited for his parents to arrive. The student stopped crying and smiled from ear to ear. I can remember asking that same student back in 2013 what he wanted to be when he grew up and he replied “I want to be the starting running back for the Refugio Bobcats”. This week, I got to see that same student play running back for the Refugio Bobcats. These are the kind of memories I have of working on the leadership team in Refugio, Texas. @Krystal Giove I don't know that much about Texas football, but where I played the size of the school determined what class the school participated in. To put a small school in a higher class than they qualify for does not make for good competition. The way to compete with this particular school is to make your players better by good coaching. The schools all have a set numbers of students that determine what class they play in, so all should be fairly equal. Coaching makes the difference.
@Krystal Giove I did not know that this school is a private one. Where I played there were no private schools so recruiting was not an issue. I do not believe that private schools should be allowed to recruit athletes. If the parents want to pay for their child to go to a private school then so be it. Private schools should only be allowed to offer scholarships based on academic achievements and then on finical need. I know there will be some coaches who would use that to get players and that is unavoidable. Where I played the coach, or athletic director, of the school made their own schedule. If no school would schedule these private schools who circumvents the rule about recruitment then that would keep the playing field level.
@@stevensonx9 'bama would have 2 or 3 more national championships had they just kept their starters in, risking injury to star players by keeping them in far longer than necessary? That's just idiotic nonsense, it literally doesn't even make sense considering 'bama doesn't have those national championships recently because they get beat by one of the other 3 CFP teams, not because they bench their starters too soon in games that are already won. Besides, 'bama's bench is so deep due to their first dibs picks of the cream of the crop in terms of high school football talent that's out there, that their 2nd and even 3rd stringers are better than the starting squads - except maybe a select few players on each team - even within the SEC with the divisional teams they play.
Exactly. Our high school coach would bench you if you publicly celebrated a blowout. If it's close yea celebrate together but shake the other teams hand first. If ya blow em out shake their hand and quietly head to the bus. Or as he put it "act like you've been there before"

@2010realitycheck so that poeple in small states don't get completley neglected that's why I agree with the electoral collage, as politicians only care about one thing, and that is getting re elected, it's also very rare for that to happen
@2010realitycheck the really big state combined have enough for 270, and now we have people in small states getting neglected, its not perfect but It guarantees no one is neglected by the goverment
@2010realitycheck wrong, neglected? they are given legislation, helping them if it was popular vote no reason for politicians to help those in small states
So his team never had to finish a game because his league is so shit and so in order to make sure his team is conditioned for REAL teams he plays his starters 4 quarters. I’m failing to see the issue here.
There isn't one. His job is to make his kids the best team they can be, nothing else. If the other teams in his league don't like it, they should work hard and improve.
The issue stated is the huge score line run through. The tactic is correct and a solition to something that was holding his team back and i fully agree with what he is doing. Ive been on the recieving end of 70-7... yeah it sucks, i hated every minute. But ive also been on the other side of 63-0 that was so boring and honestly came down to conditioning for a real team later. No kid likes it on the field but the difference is one team has a future to worry about the other is just throwing itself at a wall. He shouldnt change anything and these loser coaches complaining about getting demolished need to spend less time bitchin and more time coaching. 91 point differences arent from skill alone
The worst part is he wasn't running his starters 4 quarters but only 3. He was still trying to be nice while conditioning his guys and still got dinged for it.
Bring that shit to Florida. Plenty of South Florida teams would Run the score up on his ass. This guy needs to coach in Florida I actually like him but come to Florida where the real ballers are at.
There’s a small town (2650 people) team in Minnesota that has a similar perception. They’re on a 70 + game winning streak and they have currently won 5 straight state championships. You have to remember, the offensive job is to score points and the defensive job is to stop them. Don’t be mad because opposing defenses aren’t doing their job. If you don’t like what’s happening when you play these teams, coach them to do their job better.
The shiner commanches beat them a few years ago Refugio is #1 Shiner is #2 This year they been absolutely demolishing teams. Both of them just won their first round playoff game by over 50. They are racing towards a Collison course in a couple weeks and it'll definitely be a slugfest Last year was nearly the exact same, they both demolished teams all season, met in the playoffs, and had arguably one of the best games in texas high school history. When they play Shiner make sure to watch it
Anthony Krantz actually it probably is his fault lol. But his responsibility is his team. If it’s best for his team to not pull starters (seems like that’s the case) then he is doing the right thing
Refugio recruits players and kicks out any non football students, my school has lost to them like the past 3 years in the second round of playoffs, they keep enough people for a band and anyone that doesn’t play sports can’t go to the school
Jake Vlogs exactly! You can be strict and hard on your players but not go into unfair and damaging. Just to clarify by damaging, I mean damaging their ability to perform excellently.
In that ESPN special, he talked about how hard life can be for his students, many of whom are the kids of migrant workers. It’s great to see a coach who cares about his kid’s home life and economic circumstances to that extent even if there’s not much he can personally do about it
I agreed....but make it more challenging first quarter start ur 2nd or 3rd string team, hell if ur that good start the first half with the 3rd string and then ur 1st string second half....that would show them how great ur coaching skill is and u get ur 3 string team some confidence playing ur opponents first team...
I understand why you say that, but their division is based on how many students are in the school.....Generally speaking, schools were 3000+ students are going to have a much better football team then a school with 325 students
@@timgreen1835 i still don’t understand what the cause of the competition discrepancy is supposed to be ? @@timgreen1835 Are teams in Texas not allowed to "play up" a division when their talent level is way above the other division teams? In Colorado, they allow schools to petition to shift up or down a division, if they either completely dominate the other schools to the point that it's actually non-competitive, or if they suck so bad that they're getting beat by 40 points a game and can't even score against third-stringers.
In Texas with lacrosse, if you win all of your games in your division, you move up a division. If you lose all of your games, you move down. Not so in football.
No one said "illegal", it's just classless. Condition your players with tougher practices, not by teaching your kids to kick opponents while they're down.
For real. The world has so many jealous losers out there who do nothing but hate on successful people (and 99% of the time that success can be attributed to the winner simply outworking the loser).
@Krystal Giove Ok?If the Patriots played the jets no one would expect them to take it easy on them. You should never expect your opponent to show mercy to spare your feelings
I wonder if in Texas, small schools aren't allowed to move up divisions. As a CT native myself, I know that small schools are able to move up in divisions and compete with larger schools for their regular and post seasons if the small school has a good enough roster. However, large schools cannot go down in divisions if they aren't very talented. It seems to me like this small school should be competing with the larger more competitive schools throughout the regular season instead of the smaller less competitive schools.

And that’s just football alone.

Honestly as a High School coach you need to be stern as you deal with a lot of immaturity, you’re teaching young men how to earn and work hard in whatever they do in life and no matter how hard it may seem if you keep pushing you’ll achieve what you’ve worked hard for.
This isn't a recent development. Opposing coaches and teams have been complaining about other much talented and better teams running up the scores on them for decades. Woody Hayes & Ohio State would run up the score during their rivalry games (especially against Michigan)& that was in the 60s & 70s. It's an unwritten rule & a show of respect to call the dogs off during a blowout. I personally don't have a problem with it. Like the narrator said, the coach noticed his players were gassing out before halftime during important games, because he was benching them early during blowouts(which was almost every game)so he kept them in and kept their momentum going. I put myself in his shoes & I would have done the same thing. It's all about winning, and winning championships. & if you have a problem with that, then deal with it. Get better and beat them, keep the game close or closer & quit your fucking whining!! *"THERE'S NO CRYING IN FOOTBALL"!!*

When I was in high school we played Refugio. In our district everyone knows who the powerhouses are, and Refugio was one. There is nothing wrong with the way coach Hering coaches, he can take out his starters the 2nd half and still win 60+ That’s just how good he coaches and the Refugio football program is.

There isn't one. His job is to make his kids the best team they can be, nothing else. If the other teams in his league don't like it, they should work hard and improve.
There is no issue.
The issue stated is the huge score line run through. The tactic is correct and a solition to something that was holding his team back and i fully agree with what he is doing.

@Randummm You're a pussy
Don't like it? Stop them. My Titans got destroyed by the Pats 59-0 in '09. We sucked, and it seemed excessive, but if you have a problem with it, don't suck.
I don’t know why he’s “hated.” He’s just doing what’s best for his kids
Eli Lay because the other teams parents are forced to realize their children suck
Eli Lay lmao if you play a sport there’s always gonna be a team better weather they’re winning by 2 or by 70 somebody always gonna be better that being you should try that much harder and people just want sumthin to bitch about he’s an amazing coach
No no no remember everyone gets a trophy! We are all winners!

@@Thedrizzlestick495 For some that trophy comes in the shape of an "L"

@Torture Killah2 what's your high school name?
My swim team was in the City Championship and one school totally demolished all of the high school swim teams. I wasn’t mad but wished them the best to state playoffs.
Boomers: "Kids are so soft these days!!"
Also Boomers: "WHY'D HE HAVE TO BEAT US BY 90?!!? THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!"
What Boomer made the second comment?
@@dirklerxstpratt2112 one of the coaches said something about the kid's pain so I just turned it into that my bad
I hate boomers
Do you even know what boomer means

When I was in high school we played Refugio. In our district everyone knows who the powerhouses are, and Refugio was one. There is nothing wrong with the way coach Hering coaches, he can take out his starters the 2nd half and still win 60+
That’s just how good he coaches and the Refugio football program is.
GIT GUD AT FUTBALL OR GIT OUTTA TEXAS
I played for beauregard, where in Alabama school go to A classes, from A1- A7 and my school was A5 and we played A7 schools, powerhouse was hoover, smith station, Auburn and Opelika, and we play from A5 and up, the teams he play are just fucking cupcake !!
Thank you at least someone understands how much of a powerhouse they are. I got to play in Taft and hated playing them.
I'm from yoakum. Everyone in the state knows how good refugio is
@@deoncarlton9096 I’m in saraland lol we playing opelika tonight
This sounds like jimmy highroller
Big Breezyy I’m sayin
I thought he stole the video lol
Wait this isn’t jimmy?
Kyle Hinds It’s clearly not possible to own multiple RUclips channels
This has to be jimmy
Remember one of our local teams here in Texas playing them. Their team is really something special.
I think it makes sense and he shouldn’t get hate for playing his starters 3 quarters he was training them for when they had opponents that took them for 3 quarters without getting blown out.
So u send a man death threats because he lets his players play and the other teams can’t coach🤦🏾♂️
It seems to be the new trend for cowards to send death threats through the mail or on the internet, over the dumbest and most trivial things. Penn State QB Sean Clifford had to delete his Twitter account because of how bad it was. It was because their team lost to Minnesota.
“I throw...you catch.”

“Do you wanna lose.”

"Most Hated Coach" ... more like "Best Coach in D-2 EVER"
Yea in my opinion way better than San Saba’s and he has the championships to prove it
