When I was a kid my father bought a lion cub through a magazine ad, and she was little more than a cub. She, Ruthie, thought our German Shepherd was her mother, but he was a male and more than a little freaked out. My mother treated the cub like a baby and she responded, while father and his employees all fancied themselves lion-tamers. They were all bitten . . . We ended up giving her to the Cincinnati Zoo and I believe she was the first lioness to give birth in any American zoo.
Too much emphasis on how rare this is. All of us with RUclips know that it happens. Sure, I guess you could say that it's rare because it is not the normal way. But I will almost say it is typical that some mammals will mother the young of other species in the right circumstances (especially with human encouragement). Seems like the drive to mother, with the right hormones in play, is much stronger than the instinct to avoid other species of infants.
