Too Good to Be True! The Real Value of Antiques & Vintage

- That thing is fantastic! The best we've ever seen! But is it real?
We answer those questions and many more in this video, where we look at real antiques, fun vintage items and family heirlooms presented us at the Saint Petersburg Garden Club appraisal fair in Florida, and talk about what they are, what they're not, and why people still value them after all these years!
We go into these events with no idea what we might see, so I'm discovering them along with you and our live audience all at the same time. Did mastodons walk through Florida? Who really made that vase? Who had time to carve all that detail? There's puzzling questions we attempt to answer as we look at everything from Qing Dynasty porcelain to a Monaco sea life lamp in this fun review.
We make some people's day in this video ($1000 for an item procured for free), break a few hearts (no, that plastic elephant is not a $300 soapstone carving) and give lots of info that our viewers and the owners of these great items can use alike as we look at our own collections and seek to grow them. Appraisal fairs are a great way to take a deeper dive into the world of antiques and collectibles, and we hope to see you at one of our events this year!

My great grandfather was Hugo Schloss. He was the first person to manufacture lace in the US.
I adore you! I learn so much about antiques and collectibles from your videos. Thank you!
That is fabulous!!!
Very interesting!
Late for your feed but that’s the way my life rolls. In this case, I’ll enjoy your brilliant content anyway, I guarantee. George, The Antique Nomad, thank you for the opportunity to see this upload at whatever time it’s convenient for me. You’re one of my favorite RUclipsrs that I to watch for entertainment purposes, by the way. ❤🎉❤🎉❤
Thank you, I'm glad to leave these up for future reference
Those hat pins are divine! As is the container! Great collection. Makes me want to start a collection.
I missed the live but I watched the replay. I love George and his history lessons! He is the absolute best!!❤️❤️❤️
Your historical information knows no bounds. The story about the length of the hat pins is histerical!
Crazy, yes?
Great show! I am always amazed of your wealth of knowledge!
Thanks, I'm still learning all the time
Hint, Hint I know that the number of comments, we leave, also helps to support your channel , 💐
Yes, thank you!
Thank you , George !! You and those that follow you are fun to be 'with', in the chats 😊 So glad to have seen this video live !! The peo at the appraisal seemed so pleased with your presentaion.
Great show!!! Beautifully done George!!! U never disappoint!!!💞💞🙃💞💞
Shoot, I wasn’t notified, so I didn’t get to participate in the chat. But this was sure fun to watch. I checked, and I hadn’t checked “All” under notify me, so it was on personalized. It’s fixed now! I love watching you spew all of your incredible knowledge, George, and appreciate when you say, “I don’t know,” too! To me, that’s a sign you’re humble and brilliant.
Great, I look forward to seeing more of you now that you're on the notification schedule!
I think I will watch replay too. I was somewhat focused on the friendly chat and missed a few items and the info you share about them. 😊
I ONLY SEE. 37, thumbs-up thumb. There are lots of us here 😢 😅
Thanks! More to come I'm sure. It really does help the channel for RUclips to know you all are enjoying it

Just one point about Hungarian pronunciation z = z and zs = zh; zsolnay = zholnay
Very good to know, I'll try to correct that in future
Really was a fun appraisal show. I really enjoyed it.
How fun, you were so entertaining and fun. You can tell you enjoyed it. I kept losing my signal. Oh well
I sure had fun! Can't wait to do our appraisals in Idaho
You’re the best! Ty, George!❤❤❤
Going to watch replay later
Thanks!
We don’t have pennys I the United States. We have cents. Large cent, small cent, one cent. None of those coins are marked as a penny.
That is absolutely true from a technical standpoint. However, "Indian Head Penny" is the common name most people in the USA use to describe those, so I used the colloquial term I felt would most understood by the audience at hand.
Of course most people call them pennys. I just find it a fun fact that they are actually cents. Most people just aren’t aware of that. I’m sure it’s because of the English penny that people in the US started calling them pennys.
This chat was lovely, but I waited the entire show to hear about the elephant and donkey…. Then nothing… it’s clear you discussed them as they were facing the other way. I would love to know more! By the way, these would make great shorts and reels!
Agreed! The elephant and donkey were 1968/1972 whiskey bottles sold by Jim Beam to commemorate whichever side you're on, not super valuable but fun
Thank you so much for the response. I’m very interested in politics and would be the likely buyer of a set like that, if I were ever to run across the !
Leave it to NY to oppress in the name of progress,
Not at all unique to NY, similar things happened in the south, Wyoming gave women the right to vote and then took it away, etc.
Love the cat
So good I agree
Me too! Everyone is friendly and Georde sure can type fast
The American Hatpin Society states that the length of a hat pin was to do with the size of the hat!! Nothing about using them as weapons.
There's truth to the size thing also relating to hats, but I read all about the weapon story at the Henry Ford Museum when they did a Suffragism display for the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote
YIKES!!
The leg brace on the table on the right is not locked in place. A disaster waiting to happen. Always make sure to lock those in to prevent collapse😮
Yes that's true! I noticed after the fact, I didn't set those up but I told them in time to correct it for their flea market
Thank you George I enjoy your videos, 😊
I can listen to you forever! After watching you, I feel more knowledgeable, thank you so much for all this interesting information! The jokes were good too!
I'm so glad! I want people to learn and have fun
George, your depth of scholarship is amazing once again. I love these videos and look foward to them. Keep them coming!😊😊
Will do! Thank you. Your purchase is enroute btw
❤❤❤
Look at who women vote for, and tell me it’s still a good idea
Only wealthy landowners could vote back in the day, so it wasn't like only women were suppressed.
That's right!
I’m glad I got to see this, even though it’s the replay and I’m late getting to it. Thank you for having it available for that. 🙏💚
We encourage you to watch replays, we know our folks can't always see them live
Little known detail about stamps, the UK is the only country that isn’t required to print its country’s name on the stamp.
Yes, they invented them so they never put an origin country on them
Thanks George
Thank you!
Right on, I use to work in the Sarasota area in the early 80's. Got tons of those fossils, pretty cool stuff to see.😊
Very interesting to me that they were there
Loved the show! You are great
I didn't know there were more than a central mint in the US. I love the Szolnay pieces.
I think they're so neat looking! There's three mints currently in the US (Philly, Denver and commemoratives are made in San Francisco)
Wild George, this was absolutely brilliant. I really learned a lot from these different things. On shape size, glitch paint.
Thank you so much.😊😊😊
very entertaining!
When will you be appraising in St. Pete again?!
I just finished my third and last appraisal fair of the season there, so likely not until next year
Thank you so much for Sharing. I so enjoy your videos when you do appraisal. I always learn so much. Please Stay Safe Happy and Healthy Have A Wonderful Day

Great cat, George 😻
Love that thing
Hello from Mexico 👋
Hola! Where in Mexico?
You're language is so eloquent when explaining the value of worthless stuff. Thank you for being a gentleman.
Well, I figure even the least valuable pieces can be important to their owners for sentimental value
You Are a history teacher! 💖🧡 I always learn a lot from you. Thanks.
I never realized it, but I have fun doing it
You're very entertaining when you're doing these types of appraisals.
Thanks, I enjoy it!
Hi George. Got here about 15 minutes late, but wanted to try to watch tonight. Lots of interesting items and information. My favourite was the long German pipe. These appraisal premiers are my favourites.
I'm glad! Not everyone seems able to sit through the deeper dives, but I think the added information is useful for more advanced and serious collectors like yourself
@@TheAntiqueNomad George, you've forgotten more than I ever knew. I've been out-of-the-loop so many years, getting re-educated is what I enjoy so much about these appraisal premiers. As you can imagine, at this time, I wasn't able to be 100% attentive, but this premier was, indeed, a fantastic distraction during this time. Thanks!
@@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS I’m so glad and I’ll keep it coming!
Love the Muncie Pottery. Thank you for the information!
I do too
This was fun even if not everything was real lol. It was fun thanks for sharing and have a great day
Thank you!
George is an awesome teacher!
Did I miss the lamp in the background? Lately I've been attracted to lamps. I'll have to re-watch. Thanks George!
It was a 1920s German/Austrian vase converted to a lamp in that time
@@TheAntiqueNomad Thank you!
Thanks for sharing!
I love that salt dip.
Great show George!
Good show but I feel his prices are low .
I didn't include the preface, where I told the audience that I would give them realistic current selling prices in their area, rather than insurance values or fair market value, or a price that might be achieved in a more expensive market. I hear other appraisers give lofty values that might be attainable by professional antique dealers in high-end markets, but most people do not have access to those customers because they are not professional dealers and they are not selling to a high-end clientele necessarily.
