Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring jazz vocalist Samara Joy.
The Bronx, New York native has taken the jazz world by storm. Samara's self-titled debut album(Whirlwind Records) is on heavy rotation on jazz radio all over the world and features the Pasquale Grasso Trio. She brings a new and fresh and exciting take on songs of the great American songbook with standards like "Moonglow," "Stardust," and "Everything Happens To Me."
Samara attended Fordham High School of the Arts in the Bronx and recently graduated from CUNY Purchase where she studied under the great Kenny Washington and Jon Faddis. In 2019 she won the prestigious Sarah Vaughn Vocal Competition where she gained the attention of famed record producer, Matt Pierson. At 22 years young, Samara's performed with the likes of Cyrus Chestnut, Kirk Lightest, Christian McBride, Emmet Cohen, and Christian McBride;.
I recently sat down with Samara during her performance at the famed Dizzy's in New York City.

A wonderful and timeous interview that captures the words of a phenomenon who is much larger than the sum of her parts. Samara Joy is an unbelievable vessel of breathless beauty and art who’s restoring hope in the universe. For sure, she’s also the personification of her name, that’s Mizz Joy. May she continue to thrive as we bask in the glory of THAT voice.

What a lovely conversation! I appreciate the interspersion of performance clips throughout the interview rather than a block of talking followed by a block of concert segments. This is my first time visiting your channel, so I didn't know what to expect. Lemme just say, your interviewing style leaves room for the guest to think and provide insightful responses. Not to mention, you seem to put the interviewee at ease.
Samara Joy has such a warm presence, and her voice is simply honey🍯. I was excited to learn Samara's singing inspirations are Ms.Vaughn and Ms.Fitzgerald! You can definitely hear their influence in her phrasing and tone. (I'm not familiar w/ Ms. McRae, so I'll have to give her a listen.) It's wonderful to see my generation take an interest in Jazz and keeping the genre alive!
