      I’ve always understood this lyric as a cynical sentiment about the catastrophic outcome of a nuclear war, where every one of us stands on the same line regardless of race, wealth or power. ”The end” being the literal end of humanity. Never thought it to be a comforting lyric by any means.

      The song is about the end of us all in a nuclear war.
      Such an ever present possibility during the cold war. This man made end-of-the-world in the background all the time as two powerful enemies stared each other down.
      USA and USSR each with their finger on the button. Ready to launch in an instant. A very tense moment that stretched out for decades.
      It was as fucked up a time as a time can get.

Equal fate awaits us all. So lets not rush it with destruction. Face it, all that will be left of you Mr. Bones....is your bones. And the sooner you/we face this truism and cooperate the better off we'll be. Roger Waters knows this. And he puts his message to music beautifully. Love this man. • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 4 года назад

      Title track and Gunner's Dream are real heart-string tuggers.
      My Old Man was part of the Winter Line assaults, at least one of the major offensives at Monte Cassino (I believe there were four) and, maybe, Anzio - although he was never very forthcoming about the details of his experiences during the Italian Campaign (understandably). It's possible he was away from the slaughter at Anzio or passed through after the worst was over. Nevertheless, I often imagine them, just as a kind of reverie on my part, crossing each others' paths. Maybe a nod, a salute. One, my Dad, goes on to a life, a career, a family - albeit with undeniable PTSD. He made it out in one piece, more or less. Mr. Waters Snr. did not. Terribly tragic and so arbitrary. Anzio was an absolute shitstorm.
      WW2 was a just war, as wars go - but it was still War.
      Nuclear "deterrence" (M.A.D) cannot be called "War", not in the sense of ordinary language uses of the term. It is macabre, deadly, cold, and rational game theory.
      This is the paradox of reason, the critique of Enlightenment - that you can reason your way to insanity.
      Enough of my ramblings. Just thinking of Dad, after that song.

      well honestly saying i don't think it's sad or painful. it's sad that 2 friends can't stand each other but from the musical aspect i think it's natural and normal that people grow differently and go different ways. if you listen to their solo works, you'll notice that they are miles away from each other. they share some threads in their music but basically they are too different. if they forced themselves to work together in a band, none of them would probably be as happy as they are now and wouldn't be able to make good music together anyways. divorce is sometimes the best solution for everyone :)
