I can't believe I'm watching Outbacks drag race. Hearing the mighty 3 litre six bought back some memories as I had the MY 06 3.0R-B Liberty with the six cylinder paired to the 6spd STI transmission - had it from new until 2016. Been in a VW MY17 Passat 206 since 2016 & just traded it on an MY 25 Outback Touring XT today...
I have an 07 Outback, manual 2.5 engine. It’s a lot of fun to drive. It will cruise at high speeds like nothing. I am sure the turbo version would be a lot of fun. Very capable vehicles, my first Subaru and I’ve been very impressed, minus some engine issues like excessive oil consumption and not impressed with the service/environment at our local dealership.
I had a 2004 Forester XS with the 2.5L manual. I bought it at 150k for 2k and sold it at 270k for 2k! The original owner replaced the engine at 100k w/ paper work. He had catastrophic engine failure but reading through the paperwork I suspect he didn’t do required maintenance. Car ran like a top for me and was a blast.
I tried really hard to find a 3.6R in good condition. The dealer near me had gotten a few, but they got sold so quickly. I ended up getting a 2.4l turbo.
yes, I got one of the last in mid 2019 when I knew they were stopping the 3.6 production. Still have it and love the car. On a legal speed open road trip we can often see 7.2l/100k now it's done 65,000 and run in
got a 2008 outback LL bean 3.0R i bought for $1200 3 years ago- got 390kms on it right now and never skipped a beat. Love the car will never get rid of it. Only issue is my radio display sometimes turn on and off when hitting bumps lol. But the music don't stop lol so we still good.
@user-wy6wg3kh7o it's still running good! Had a rock hit my condenser, so I had to change that. Also did both valve covers, passenger side started to leak. Other than that, it runs great, no engine lights or anything.
I just bought an Outback today. A 2008. It's truly an amazing car. I have it in manual. Beautiful to drive. My answer to your question, is that if you have an old version competing with the new models, that's a good sign across the board for that make of car. For old and new Subaru's. I had a choice of a 2010 Liberty or a 2008 Outback, and i went with the latter.
Would be interesting to compare the new turbo Outback vs an Outback 3.6R Premium (my wife has one). The 3.6 engine is impressive for what it is an it's intended function.
@@dmedeiros1974 Yeah but the new Outback is a far better vehicle in general. The 2014-2020 Outback felt like a slightly nicer Camry whereas the new one gets awfully close to an A6 Allroad (I cross shopped both and decided to get 90% of the vehicle for 50% of the price).
I've had 2 x 3.6 Outback's and a 2006 3.0 litre one. The newer 2019 3.6 is slightly heavier but quicker and more economical than my old 2010 3.6 model. If drivers care enough to learn how to use that CVT properly, remembering that it will drive for peak economy if left to use its own little computer brain, they'll see the strength of the cars in that all important overtaking speeds area from 80-130kph. They are excellent long distance tourers, not traffic light grand prix cars.
LUV It! Great stuff, very well conceived comparo. Love that you wheeled out your parents venerable '05 model and ran it against the newest shiniest version. The ol' girl didn't do too badly at all eh?! Another interesting comparo, VERY interesting, would be the new turbo against the 3.6R, the last of the greatest big suby sixes. They must have had their heads in the sand when discontinuing THAT motor and not making a special performance model with a turbo or something like that - GREAT engine! Thanks again for a very entertaining vid! (something not many people know is that the new Suby Outback turbo 2.4 is running 14.5psi boost. That's the same that the Sprint 6 4.0L Falcon makes!!)
haha love it. The FA24 may have gotten the win as expected , but it'll never match the sound of an EZ30 on song :D . That said , with a the 6 speed man behind the EZ, can almost guarantee you would have turned the tables times wise.. the old 5EAT , esp in first gen is a bit doughy. Miss our Gen4 3.0 outback dearly, but thankfully I do still have a spec b 3.0 (man) in the stable -edit, also big credit to your parents for looking after it so well.. it's mint!.
The flat-6 sounds superb. With a manual, that would be awesome. Yes, you’re right, the 5A in this is a bit laggy and sluggish at times. Hold onto your spec B!
Mate, I've got a 3.0r , 05, outback with a sport's exhaust and better air intake setup with a K&N filter and I've found with that setup make's it a lot more lively plus the better suspension and Super Pro bushes throughout make's it much more pleasurable to drive, I absolutely love it and the fact it's 20 years old make's me smile everytime I drive it, it still surprises many people with how good it goes ,great video mate 👍🦘🇦🇺
Awesome video!! I owned an 05' Outback too (with the 2.5L Auto however), was an excellent car - miss it heaps. Great to see this one in such lovely condition.
I have a 3.0 Outback from -07 and love it! The styling is so spot on, drives like a dream, engine is super smooth, so silent on idle you hardly notice it inside the cabin. But when giving it some throttle, it does move. Also a real good car to pull a caravan with!
I still look at nice condition 2006-2008 Outbacks and admire their looks. The extra interior space from 2009/10 onwards is a big plus though for those who need it
Out of all the expensive cars and ute’s here, it’s still the 04 3.0 outback we keep jumping into for everything: had it from new and will have it till it dies…love it to bits
Judging by the power to weight ratio it is clear that the transmission in the older one is more into the comfortable side. With a manual or a valve body upgrade it could turn positions. That 2005 is in amazing condition, really nice.

The facelift 3rd gen was the golden age of the outback IMO, it was really just a regular station wagon on stilts whereas the newer ones just feel like SUVs. I didn't expect the new generation to be so much faster though!
Should pit the new XT against the Liberty GT. In the North American market Outback could be optioned with the 2.5t engine, which I think would be more fair.
I have a 2007 3.0L Outback. Put a complete exhaust system on and had it tuned. Does 0-100 in 7.1 seconds with bigger tires and a little lift 😆. Smoked 2 turbo outbacks so far 👍. Love this car!
no, the new model doesn't need to be any quicker than it is. It is a testimony to Subaru that a 20 year old car is faster than it was when first tested. I found this to be the same with both Outback 3.6s I've had ( 2010 and 2019) and fuel consumption also improves. There is no reason to think this turbo car will not show similar improvements over time. Subaru Outback is a wonderful car
nice Just on the flat 6 re: boxer, meh never a fan of these engines, the turbo will have more bottom end punch but wont push 7,000rpm like the boxer 6 can. the other difference is CVT v torque converter. clearly the CVT without needing to upshift has the advantage.
@@drivingenthusiastaustralia - actually I the 200kg extra weight is probably an advantage to the new Outback for a safety concern. For the last what is now 13 years? I have been used to having BOOST in the midrange, A petrol i4 even with large displacement 2.5L is not the same, don't get me wrong, gearing can sort of make up for that but maths is maths and a turbo petrol making 345Nm from 2,000 to 4,500rpom clearly has more power than a NA petrol which generates peak torque 244Nm at 3,600rpm. for the record that is 130kW @ 3,60rpm for the 2.0L turbo petrol i4 92kW @ 3,600rm for the NA 2.5L i4. Difference: 39kW Back to this video, just how many times are you going to 7,000rpm? Give me bottom/mid range torque any day of the week.
I've seen in USA someone tested the new Outback 2.4T and it did like 5.8 seconds from 0 to 60mph which is around 6.2s from 0 to 100km/h. This was measured with Dragy Performance Meter, almost 0% slope, no rollout, car brand new completely stock. In your case the car wasn't in launch mode because in that mode it doesn't fake shift and it's faster than with those fake shifts.
I noticed that the older model has the SAME gloomy, depressing, drab, boring, outdated, coffin like interior colors as the new model. People are sick and tired of those Old interior colors, but automakers really don’t give a crap about what their “Valued Customers” want. 'Virtual' drag race starts at 8:21
The current XT is faster, more efficient, more practical, safer and better built, so the one you should buy is obvious: an 05 to 09 clean Outback H6 😂
I needed turbo noises so I got the 05 xt haha
