One of the things that I was taught early on in my electrical engineering career was to use the right tool for the job in hand. In this case a 50 cent light bulb was superior equipment to a $300 Fluke DMM.

Earths... they can be a total pain!
We misdiagnosed my brother's Renault with what we thought was a duff ignition switch causing a non start despite a good battery, start relay and healthy starter motor.
After going to the dealer to order a non refundable new barrel and key with switch for £170 in 2008 (the old blades were getting worn anyway) and the non starting issue remained.
Turned out the ground strap from the bell housing to the body had corroded and broken...this was causing the non start issue and at the time was sorted for £5... that'll teach us for looking for a complicated answer to a simple problem!
Thank you for a clear and well made video, superb stuff!

@Jason Bowman when he got to that bit, I was thinking he was going to repair the wires. But then I also thought, if it's my car, I think I'd rather keep the original connectors and wires rather than having a spliced-in repair. If the copper is all still good, then the original wires are fine to take current. And it's a ground, so even if the insulation fails later it won't be a problem.

Hi Dan, great video and classy troubleshooting process. When I posted 4 months ago I totally missed an important cue. The 11X family meter you were using (116 or 117) have a Low Impedance input (much like an old timey VOM) It's a 3K ohm input for AC or DC compared to VAC Auto or VDC Auto being a 10 Meg ohm input. You should be able to switch to LoZ and see the same phenomenon as with the incandescent test light. The Fluke 11X family I believe were among the first to offer this valuable feature. I am not sponsored or compensated by Fluke in any way but do use their meters for my work and training I do. Really, like with you, just a personal endorsement of an excellent device that works as published!

However we had 12 volts everywhere where we should, so it was assumed that the starter was bad. Luckily I know the importance of putting a circuit under load before committing to a component replacement. As soon as we put the circuit under load, the voltage dropped to 4 volts. And you guessed it, it was a bad Earth. Well done Dan for showing how easy it is to be tricked by a good voltage reading.

When I was about 13 years old I used to "help" my Dad fix the car. He told me to always put Vaseline on battery terminals, "because it conducts electricity". Many years later I tested this theory with a multimeter. Of course Vaseline does not conduct electricity, it just keeps the air out of the places that aren't in contact. In a situation like Dan has just shown I would have greased the connections. I live in a remote area and don't have easy access to fancy sprays so I'll use what I have to hand.

Your problem with forming understandable sentences makes me wonder in what area of electrical repair or maintenance you are working at . A professional electrician? Nah, I don't think so. I try to understand , a buck is a deer, in electronics? where? inside a wire? And last time I checked we had Euro's. Bitching about the price for an aftermarket key is pathetic. Be happy that it is possible to program and sell them. 250 Euro's and more for OEM. That's reality but reading your comment and the name of the person that agreed with you gives me a better understanding of the kind that you are.

I needed a second key for my 2016 Skoda Octavia and bought a replacement key from a Chinese manufacturer. None of the local automotive locksmiths could program it so I went to the Skoda dealer. They charged me $165 to tell me that the key was not a genuine Skoda key and that I need to buy one through them and have it programmed. The cost &700. With the key programmer demonstrated by DiagnoseDan I may have been able to save $700. I certainly feel that I have been ripped off.

@@Diagnosedan I have to look this up. I thought a resistive point in the circuit (bad connection or corrosion) would show a voltage drop like putting a resistor in series. If I understand, pulling a current (a load) can generate enough heat at the resistive point that it destroys continuity and breaks the circuit.
It's not that the voltage is reading wrong on the meter. It's that the load is testing all the connections under actual current draw and a weak connection will fail.
I got the impression from the video that there was a problem with the test meter and the digital test light. Like they were not showing the actual voltage. Really, they are too sensitive. They tell you everything's fine when it isn't.
Excellent video (as usual). Worth thinking about.

@@alext8828 there probably whee no issues with the multimeter or led tester niether are they too sensitive.
I assume he didnt gave a actuator command to start the fan while he meusured the ground, otherwise the fan itself would be the load and the voltage would had dropped.

    • @alext8828
      @alext8828 4 года назад +1

@@KaasTube Ah, that is right. Normally, at least from my experience, testing is done by casually hitting all the test points and noting the results. It would be, as you say, a requisite to either switch the related component on or, as Dan did (finally), use a resistive test w/ load; ie. incandescent bulb.
I need to remember this result.
Just as an added comment; I did troubleshooting for a dealer and one of the things that we got a lot of were short circuits caused by the wiring harness being damaged by assembly screws driven thru the harnesses. We had a meter that could follow the harness and find the short. It worked by momentarily switching the circuit on at the fuse box and the meter was hand-held and would pick up the magnetic field of the circuit turning on and off. An arrow on the meter told which direction to move to find the short. I thought that was the coolest. Never saw that system again. Very clever and this was in the '60s. Our most advanced piece of diagnostic gear was the Sun analyzer. Dan has been a tremendous help in furthering my understanding of these things. Thanks for your comments.

I decided that I was going to buy only one step ladder in my life so it would have to be a good one, it cost £160 ten or more years ago. The legs are locked with solid steel bars and wing nuts, no flexing it is solid. It folds out to become a 10ft. ladder, again locked with a solid bar. The treads have sharp "V" shaped ridges, there is no way that you will ever slip. Well damn, I just searched and they don't make them any more :(

Hi, this is the first of your videos that I have watched, but it certainly won’t be the last. As soon as you started asking “did we make a mistake” when confirming 12V I had an idea where you were heading. I have spent 40+ years installing radio telephone style equipment into vehicles of all types and uses. I’m not a mechanic but I do understand something about electronics and electrics in vehicles and fault finding in general. Any way……. This problem that you had here reminds me of a rather embarrassing incident I had with a coach some years ago and is related to your problem, but potentially in a more spectacular way! We had about 100 coaches to install for a large bus company and subbed out the install of the aerials and 24V to 12V convertors to a local auto electric company. On one coach when I installed and tested the radio it powered on, went through the boot up procedure and appeared fine. When I transmitted it powered off! Right, there was 12V from the convertor, but, when I transmitted i.e., took about 3A from the convertor, the volts dropped to zero. Why? Well, it was a rather badly designed fuse box / power distribution system in the coach and the fitters had a slight problem in finding a -ve/ground for the 24V as there was no stud provided, as there is in many commercial vehicles. So, they had found what looked very similar to your ground in your video, a stud with 3 or 4 wires coming off it. NOW the similarity to your video, they measured between +24V and the stud, there was 24V, so they fed their convertor’s ground to this point and took 24V+ from the correct place. All was well, 12V out of the convertor. Did I say it was a non-isolating convertor that passed the -ve straight through? Anyway, after having a couple of arguments with the driver who wanted to take the coach out on the road, I was walking to get a spare convertor and radio just in case one was faulty. I heard a scream and saw the driver exiting the coach followed by a cloud of white smoke, he left his seat, cleared the space where passengers stood to pay and got down the steps in one single movement!! When he got into the coach to take it out, even though he had been told not to he did 2 things, he clipped the radio microphone into its metal clip that was bolted to a metal plate on the dash and having done this he turned on the interior lighting system in the coach. I’m sure you have guessed by now, the -ve for the 24V that the contractor had picked up was in fact the switched 24V line to the lighting circuit and “appeared” to be ground/-ve as it had multiple paths to ground through all the bulbs. But when the driver turned the lights on this “-ve” line became +24V at rather a large number of amps. The now + lead went through the non-isolating convertor, through the radio chassis, which happened to be isolated from ground as it was in a plastic DIN slot, and then through the curly microphone lead and clip to ground. The lead instantly glowed red and all the insulation burnt off producing an amazing amount of smoke. The driver looked a shade shocked. He was told not to touch the coach but went ahead and did it anyway. He may listen next time! Thank you for your great video and diagnostics procedures and for fetching back this “happy” memory to me 😊 It wasn’t funny at the time, it could have been terribly serious, but after a few years it has become a good educational story and slightly more amusing!

But it was really great that you used multiple ways to test power and ground to show the importance of using an incandescent test light.
** On the Fluke, once you read the voltage, switch the toggle to “ AUTO-V LoZ” and you will see that the 12.3VDC dropped instantly which indicates that the 12.3V will not handle any load. Thanks and keep the videos coming !!
