So a trick for the books... If you want substance rather to just style. Make removable covers for your books, so you have the same books on your shelves but they fit with your colour theme. You can make them from thrift store book covers that you paint, or fabric.
Amy Vintage Oh my gosh, this is such a great idea! I have a ton of thrift store books I absolutely love but there are all sorts of colors. Thank you for the tip!
I like to have my things that I use on a daily basis on easy to reach shelves but I try to keep it looking nice with a few decorative things mixed in. Makes for the best of both words, functionality and aesthetics. 😊

I am just really confused about the fact that she has this giant built-in but nothing to put in there? Like it is literally just decor, nothing else. I always have trouble because I do not have enough space to give decorative pieces room to breathe as I have so many books and stuff :/
Try organizing your books by color if you have no room to put decorations. 😀 I have way too many books too but I boxed the ones I’ve read to get out later and have room for decor.
Tip 1a. Go through your personal items that you have inherited from friends and family or collected through life and THEN fill in the gaps with buying meaningful things that bring you happiness when you see them. Also measure your shelves to make sure that anything you HAVE to buy will actually fit. Especially from the thrift store where there are no exchanges and definitely no refunds. Stay smart with your money people!
I agree completely. Your house should be a home and not a movie set. While one obviously wants shelves and other parts of a home to look pleasing and comfortable, I firmly believe that as much memory items should be incorporated where appropriate. I have managed to incorporate a few items I inherited from my parents. This should also apply with books ... surely they should have some meaning above being just something to put an ornament on.
Woooooow these comments are pretty energized for a chill video about stylin shelves. So my thoughts: books are for reading, books are for art (because writing and communicating and storytelling are art, and oh yeah, anything can be art) books are for decor, books are for weights in smushing tofu to get the moisture out, books are for whatever someone needs them for, just as all possessions must offer varied purpose and should not be given greater value than the person with a need. Shelves are for storing things, but again, can serve any purpose that a person needs. She clearly doesn't need storage space, (I think she might have multiple homes in Canada and LA but don't quote me on that) and so what she needed was either a backdrop for youtube videos, or a welcoming space for guests, or a staged area for parties, or just a pleasant display to look at in her home. She is allowed to spend as much or as little on as wasteful or as purposeful a decor item as she pleases. The video was just a tip from the perspective of youtubers who always need cute new backdrops to film in front of, who decorate and style spaces as a main theme of videos, who are sharing tips on how to get that "magazine" look of an unlived-in, styled, and staged home. It is not so deep that those of us who have homes that look "lived in" or stuff we actually have to store or bookshelves that house books need to have a fit that the video is UNRELATABLE! WASTEFUL! CRINGE-WORTHY-BOOK-DISRESPECTING! If this video doesn't apply to you, perhaps go search for "cute bookshelf organization tips" and that shelf may be more what you're looking for. Just my thoughts.
@@kebert2thumbsup Right there with you girl! My books have started invading every free (or not so free) surface possible haha. Desks, chairs, tables, floor... Everywhere!

Loved this guide! Loved all the steps you laid out and presenting examples throughout the video. Makes it so much easier now to know how to style a shelf. Thank you for this video, and yes to the diy straw mirror! Would be neat to see a video on that.
This is so useful thanks! I have some shelves in my room that I don’t know how to style it was just a mess but now they look good! Bye I’m twelve and super into interior design
My shelves are used to display the things I love, whether they’re functional or not! I love seeing the ideas of how to fill in gaps so everything works cohesively 🥰
I don't count my books and comics, imo is something there isn't worth it put on numbers; they make me happy and that's what matters. Every now and then I collect the ones I didn't like and donate them.
The shelves you styled look great! Do you have any advice for styling a bookshelf that is mostly filled with books? I don't like the "turn the spine around" hack, but all my books are different colors and sizes and it doesn't look very good. It would be so great if you could make a video about how to style functional bookshelves that have a lot of books on them! Thanks for making such fun and helpful videos!
I have a very tall and large built in shelf in my house that I have so much trouble making it look nice and presentable but after watching this video, I think I feel confident styling it
Gosh My home thanks you so much for this video. Love every thing especially the hard back white books and trailing plant. I don't actually have any shelves but I will have tomorrow and I can't wait to style them . Take care everyone 😉
It feels a bit cluttered with so many small items. I would pick a few much bigger items like a tall vase or something else and use that to get some height and get about half of the small items.
@Kaththee1 Uh duh. But you also need some kind of visual anchor which doesn't need to be a big item, although that helps. But just the little stuff is not going to cut it.
A few tips: •Salt laps look good basically anywhere •Old bottles can be turned beautiful simply: *Flip a bottle so the base is face up and add paint on the bottom and slowly blow it so it drips off and allow the dry. *Add in a bed of chunky salt and small dried plants to add a natural feeling *Filling it with clear gel balls with gold flakes adds a classy touch •Old sea shells in small amounts looks very beautiful •The new wax melters are cute as hell just saying •Making a wooden frame and putting basically anything in it looks great; *Add a thin sheet of metal and add magnets *Add fabric and embroider in anything *Photos or art *Add it leveled wood to make cute little shelves *Or rope and hang glasses.
I don´t have a loot of books but i like to have them all together, not everywhere in the house , u can still decorate your bookshelf with some items , but it´s still a bookshelf made for holding books , not just decoration or useless items !
Good tips! Love the BBB. Could it be possible to do a styling video for shelves for people that have loads of books? So it can be cute, but also optimize the space. I am sure you have a lot of subscribers that live in small appartments and don't have the luxury to just have cute shelves with nice decor. It could also be an idea for a series: Cute, practical and cheap for small spaces! xx
I think there are definitely ways of making shelves look nice while also doing what they were made for like storing books and other items. One thing I like to do with my full bookshelves is push the books back so that there's still a ledge available on the outside where you can put candles or little plants to add some layering. Another thing you can do is switch up the way you stack the books. You can have some standing up in a row, and others stacked horizontally, then put a little plant or figurine on top of the stack.
I don't really understand that criticism. Books are also aesthetic items, thats part of why we love them so much. They have a huge design aspect and add to a room's atmosphere. And on top of that, every book nerd usually has a huge pile of books sitting around unread. Live and let live.
@@rosemarybruce6290 I've seen people that buy books just because they look "nice" and never read a page, and I find that disrespectful towards the author.
@@louibeans that's your opinion. For me, buying a book just because it looks nice is a disregard of the author's effort, and I think it's disrespectful.

I really love The Sorry girls videos. But maybe you can give little tips on how to tackle those beautiful decoration without buying useless stuff? Maybe like putting a DIY cover over the real books we already have if the purpose only for matchy matchy colors, or looking for easy growing house plants instead of the plastic one, or repurposing old drinking glass for flower arrangements. You don't have to show it, maybe just explain it by words. 😊 Anyway thank you for always creating inspiring videos. Looking forward for your next one

But everyone should know that books of different color schemes can still be styled in ways that look amazing. Just look at any BookTuber's background. I know I always get compliments on my videos from my book filled, horror themed shelves. You can display books you've actually read and plan to read in fun and unique ways that aren't just painting them white. For example, you can create a rainbow shelf! Kelsey did this a little on her single shelf which I appreciated. But let's make sure we appreciate the book itself. Writing and publishing a book is really really hard. And even if a story may not be too good in your eyes, doesn't take away from the fact that that writer poured their heart and soul into a story that they want people to read, not just look at. Much love y'all. ❤️
How do you style a shelf that ALSO has to be functional? Like, I have a bookshelf and I have at least one full row of books per shelf, but I also want it to look pretty. So, how would you suggest styling that?

cause that's the sensible thing to think
and that’s why your shelves look stupid. There’s ways to make your strobes useful and stylish
colahu111 you’re right. But in this video there is no useful objects on these shelves. They went opposite of functional and went completely to styles.

Those built ins are the new rich RUclipsr flex. They build them in just to style them and fill them with decor. It’s the new custom closet.
