Thank you very much for demonstrating these knots. I'm kinda liking the figure 8 knot for sealing small bags of weighed fruit at the supermarket, but if you think there's an even easier knot to untie for such a use, I'd love to see a video of such a knot!

Thank you...no one has taken the time to really discuss the knots. I use them in beading and I have had the worst time working them out. You would think that making a video on knots wouldn't be appreciated, but it is. Too many people out there are getting into designing jewelry and beadwork, even rosaries, and knots are exceptionally beautiful in the work when they are done correctly. God bless.

Great video, good explanation and demo of each knot.
For decorative monkey's fists, I like to put a stopper knot in the very end of the line and use that as the core of the knot. Knot auto-bulked, end auto-hidden!

Thanks for the monkey's fist - that's one I never learnt! Originally it was used in a heaving line - insert a medium size stone in the knot, and you can throw the rope end a long way.
For boating, the only stopper knot recommended for use is the figure of 8 (RYA syllabus) - it's the only one that can be undone easily after tension. All the others bind - great for not coming undone, but will usually require a marlin spike to undo them...

Monkey Fist can be considered a weapon and is illegal as such in many states. Also, most ships use sandbags instead as if longshoremen find out you have a "loaded" monkey fist you might be in for a swim.

An automatic rifle chambered in .50bmg is perfectly legal, a pair of .44 magnum revolvers are perfectly legal, a massive armored vehicle can be legal, but a bit of rope is too dangerous?
      Our laws are really strange.

Excellent & Educational video! I use the Figure 8 Knot the most. I believe each knot has its purpose and place. Bulky knots don't work well for me when carrying a pocket knife, especially when wearing dress slacks or a suit. Key fobs should have lighter knots as the weight of keys and whatever else is attached can wear down the ignition switch.

I’ve used a different of the barrel knot (where you pull 3 loops of your finger. Pau the workiing short end through the barrel and then double back. Did this so by the end it is s pointing in the same direction as the long. The loops can be tightened so a loop is formed.

When tying a monkeys fist it’s useful to splice the bitter end through the standing part of your line so that the monkeys fist itself is part of an eye. Then wrap the spice with whipping twine for a strong, clean connection. Also, a small, lead cannonball fishing weight (no more than two ounces, and with the brass eye removed) will give enough mass to carry the line a long distance without hurting the person on the receiving end.
