Your daily vids are doing an excellent job of cheering me up as I slog through the seemingly never ending gloom of a January commute. Thanks so much for the dose of sun and smiles and may the rest of your trip be as jolly! 🌞 🚲 🌴
What a difference it makes when you get to ride somewhere where everyone is so lovely, it's one thing that you don't have to worry about and you can just enjoy the ride and the views, looking forward to the mountains.
There is just something about a happy Katie video that enriches the soul and brings a warm happy feeling! Oh and by the way I finally realise why you love shokz! I was lucky enough to be gifted some for Christmas AMAZING!Thank you for starting my day with a happiness!
Brilliant. Will enjoy this series. Backpacked around Thailand years ago and can still remember how friendly everyone was, especially outside of Bangkok when you realise they're just coming up to say and not to sell you something. Everyone seemed chilled and hard working at the same time, nothing to prove. God speed and have fun :)
What a great ride and lovely to be with you Katie - yes us viewers are all your friends and I really love this style of video xx keep them coming and enjoy the ride xx
Absolutely love Thailand! And it shows in the sparkle in your eyes. Love the glow. Thai people are just next level nice. Thoroughly loved watching this video. Safe riding! Cheers from Singapore.
I'm here already, albeit in the NE (Chaiyaphum in Isaan). You're right it's fabulous cycling here, and with the nicest, most helpful, welcoming people you could meet anywhere. Ttuly blessed to have a Thai wife and her family, and several Thai cycling friends.
I was cycling in Thailand 20 years ago and just loved it. I did a few days in Bangkok and 10 days in Chang Rai with an organised tour. Yes, the people are super friendly. Cuba is super friendly also. It is flat now but killing mountains later. I was transported up a mountain, 30% grade and then biked down to the next town with 40% grade. It felt like I was falling from switch back to switch back. I love mountains so it was exhilarating but scary for 20 kms down. Later
Hi Katie. Great to see you experiencing joy with the Thai people. I've been considering a trip to SE Asia over the next year or so, but never thought of cycling over there. You've given me something to think about. Reckon I'll hire a bike over there actually. May peace, joy and love be with you in all your journeys!
Looks lovely.. I've always said Chinese,Japanese,Thailand,Philippines..Asian countries, the people are so friendly and considerate.. don't come back too soon.. here in the UK, we are expecting another cold spell and snow beginning of February..
Thailand seems lovely so far, can’t wait for the mountains. I work with some Thai people and they are lovely people always so helpful and hard workers. Thanks for the video ❤
Such a lovely video. We also love the Thai people, they are sooo lovely. By the way in Thailand they often use the Buddhist calendar which is I believe, 543 years ahead so the year now is 2565! Travel safe. That’ll explain the ‘best by’ date!
I always wonder how safe you feel as a woman travelling internationally on your own, but Thailand looks like the most welcoming and kind place ever having seen Fancis’ trip and yours so far. Must be so refreshing to feel safe on the roads too😊
68 - 2568 - is the Buddhist calendar year, and corresponds exactly with the Western 2025. It doesn't mean it expires in 2068 😊 If you come back to Thailand again, cycle across Isaan - scenery, mountains, rivers (Mekong etc) and even nicer people. And it barely rains at all for 3 months in the winter, temperatures in the high 20s but you'll need a long sleeve for the evenings.
@ 3°C here, some light rain... but 40°C it too much for me. Or maybe zone 1 training... I've been in Thailand, now the temps will start to climb soon, come April-May even the locals suffer!
Welcome to Thailand, Chiang Mai a fantastic place to cycle up towards the mountains to Pai then doing the Mae Hong San loop back to Chiang Mai.... It's very steep, those endless switchbacks climbs though ...Enjoy the pain and the scenery... Do stop at the road side cafe stops, their coffee is Great!!
@@KatieKookaburra never been to Thailand but loving the food, how patient folk are, and friendly. The roads seem quiet. And drive on the same side as UK.
I’m not sure on the roads over there from Katie’ vids. If I get honked by a lorry horn it gives me a heart attack even if it’s meant politely. I don’t mind a bit of flat route, get some speed up. Followed Katie’s journey on Strava don’t know how she does such distances. Kudos from me. Glad to hear that there are nice people out there, and she was happy and safe.
Hi katie, Thanks for showing your bike gear setup. Riding with minimalist setup is the best when Riding in windy conditions due to having less weight, which means less energy expended when Riding into the wind. Nice 220km ride . Safe travels katie. Katie what size water bottles?
I'm sorry I don't understand the desire to ride across the central plains of Thailand. If you come here, head North to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Nan and spend your time exploring some of the best roads you will find. Oh and don't forget come in November and December as from January onward the smog is bad.
Katie - what cycling and clothing “kit” did you take for your trip please? Doing my first 4 day (carry all on your bike) trip to Amsterdam in June and bogged down with ideas for packing light 🙈Thanks in advance
Hey Katie, I'm not too sure if you have covered this before. But it would be nice to talk to about or any advices about being on a period during a bikepacking trip.
That date format for the expiry date of something or other fascinated me! I may be the 100,000 person to have mentioned this but I discovered that Thailand uses the BE year system ( hands up those who knew that system exists) BE = Buddhist Era, so today's date is 30/01/2025 in European format, 01/30/2025 for Americans, and 30/01/2568 BE
@@KatieKookaburra I've earned several hundred thousand pounds on this kind of thing! Shocking? Not really. Nice for me, but I'm old and It is spread over several decades. Sounds fantastic. I’m definitely putting this on my bucket list just one thing did you per buck all your accommodation in hand or did you just do it on the fly .. this is one of your best 👍
Hi Katie, if you could elaborate on the bike a bit maybe, I saw that it appears to have rim brakes. I have an old rim brake bike that I really love and that fits me well but I'm looking into upgrading mainly because I want more tire clearance. I want to be able to comfortably ride some gravel sections on my road bike if I come across them, also so I don't have to modify existing routes (looking into doing a Eurovelo this spring/summer and the offical marked route isn't 100% paved). Does your choice of bike still allow you to do that? Or do you only ever ride on tarmac?
You don't need much when it's 25-30°C all the time... Should easily fit in this empty top tube bag, and the 7 liters saddle bag also looks almost empty! Love the vids, if you did the ride again, would you consider changing the route given that time wasn't an issue?
No because I wanted to ride from Bangkok and think a lot of the routes up north would be similar. But I might be wrong.
