- I look at the Rough Ryder Big Daddy Barlow in Ram's Horn Bone and compare to knives in Genuine Ram Horn. I also take a look at the other Rough Ryder Big Daddy Barlows in my collection.
Just bought ne of these yesterday on my trip to SMKW. It's an amazingly beautiful and well put together knife! It replaces an actual antique Grandaddy Barlow that i had when i was a kid that i lost. Im super happy with it!
I've been impressed by all of the granddaddy Barlows out of RR. It such a good large frame knife!
That is a really good looking knife Tobias! Love the Barlow pattern!!
Nice knife and cool box
Absolutely making me lust for these toothpicks........ and the music you choose couldn’t have been better you had me dancing with my iPad in hand!!!!!! Thanks again for another great one!!!!!!!!
I bought two of these from Slipjoint Guy. I like rams horn, but without the bark. It’s is a beautiful, translucent, almost amber like material. The Marbles style is nice, but not as good. This Ram’s Horn Bone is really nothing like ram’s horn, but I like it, just for what it is. I gave Paddy one of mine and the other I’ll stay. The shield grates indeed, but with the greater real estate here, it doesn’t seem so bad. I don’t like frosted blades, ever, but, being a leftie, it’s slightly less of an issue. All in all, a great knife. I’m pretty sure I’ve done a video on this super large knife. It’s quite possibly my favourite RR. I’d like one in stag Bone. It wouldn’t have the frosted blade, but would likely have cover shield. That smooth white bone looks great! Just a shame that none of these are available in the UK!
Did he start selling again?
Christopher Bastian sadly not 😞 It was about 8 or 10 months ago. I bought 6 or 7 pieces from him. Mostly Case plus these. Even with shipping RR were still cheaper than buying here in the UK and the Case knives were quality checked too! Miss him!
Slick Slicers yeah he sold me my first rough rider. I got the stag barlow that was in his video. Now I’ve got about 70 of them and I blame him! 😂
Personally I like the actual ram horn look much better. The fact that each side are different makes it all the better.
That's a lovely knife. I love Barlows in particular. One like that I'd put in a sheath or slip on my side.
I was skeptical of the rams horn, ended up loving it, thanks for sharing
The smooth white bone is the best one for shure 👍😁
A very nice subscriber gave me one of those. Excellent knife. I really like the way they did the handles.
Tobias, I love your videos! I have the yellow handle and a white smooth bone. The smooth bone has an orange-yellowish tint and a bomb shield. I had posted pictures on the Rough Rider Blades group on Facebook.
I'll have to check it out. I think I'm on that group but I rarely see notifications for it. I'm not sure why.
Did you say a price? I must have missed it. Good video and an interesting knife.
Looks to be $12.99 from SMKW. Good price
I didn't mention it. I think they were around $13 at SMKW. They tend to go around $18 or so on eBay.
I really like the look and the size of the Big Daddy Barlow. Good looking knife. Thanks for explaining about them. That pattern looks interesting.
Definitely on my gotta get list. 👍
Rams horn is a good looking barlow. I think out of the slide show that white smooth bone is more up me alley.
Thanks again Tobias for an informative video.
The White Smooth bone is simple and tasteful. No excess shield and no blade etching. Just a nice embossed bolster. It's how Barlows should be!
The bone looks gorgeous, not really like ram's horn, but that's ok.
You could tell Rough Rider to do themselves a favour and have an embossed bolster or a shield, not both. It doesn't look right and they can save money! I'm not a fan of blade etching, but I understand it.
Thanks for showing them Tobias. The Big Daddy Barlow and the regular Barlow look great together! 👍
Agree 100% But when it comes to Barlows I'm very much in favor of embossed bolster and no shield - EVER! And I'm at the point that most blade etches equals "Not interested!"
Just ordered one, I like it.
Love rams horn. It seems to crack less than bone. I wish they had actually used it for these scales. And we’ve already established my feelings about Barlows.
I love this pattern . I have the yellow one and find that I carry it say more than I thought I would .
The Large barlows are just an outstanding knife for daily use, especially if you need a bigger knife for heavy duty chores.
I have all of those rough riders except the white bone. I have never seen that one before. I also have the one in yellow composition and it is my user.
Nice knife, I really like Ram's Horn.
I would really like to own one of the white bone grandaddies, a seriously nice knife.
I picked up a Dog bone jack after seeing your other video, I got it from a French ebay site I like who does a lot of Rough Riders, nice little knife but I dumped the lanyard and whistle, the lanyard interfered with the pen blade opening and closing.
I like the music today.
That's the one Rough Ryder should bring back and put into continuous rotation. No annoying etches or shield. Great looking bolster. Simplicity in design and function. And the white bone can be dyed by the adventurous folks who want to experiment!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias It definitely is a nice knife, I usually use an almond wood or cherry wood solvent based wood dye on bone, wipe it off after a few seconds and the stail gets absorbed into micro cracks and blemishes in the surface, it makes the bone look more aged and gives it character. I have been using my large classic carbon stockman more and more, a great knife but with the yellow white plastic covers, if it had white bone it would be perfect.
It would be nice if Rough Rider would issue the carbon series with different covers anyway, they are too good to just leave with the Delrin(?).
Great review, liking Rough Ryder knives. Gonna get a GEC soon.
Thanks. Looking forward to hearing about your GEC!
I have this knife and I love it! (but I didn't know it was actually made of cow horn until you told me!) Also, I subscribed to your channel because you talk about Rough Ryders.
Great video, Tobias! I really appreciate the comparison between the genuine horn and the ram horn bone. Though I think they both look great, I think I would tend to lean more toward the genuine. Cheers.
I totally agree! Something about genuine. Thanks for watching!
I like the Ram Horn knives. I have that lg. Marbles toothpick too and she sure is purtty. On it's own the RR has quite the appeal also, very nice. Thanks Tobias.
PS I forgot to mention if you come across the Big Daddy Barlow RR1036 in Smooth Amber Bone, Tobias it is a real beauty and worth getting just for it's looks though it is a tight knife...I promise.
Thanks for the info! Another one to keep my open for!
Great looking knives - thanks for showing these. I recently got a large stockman in Marbles genuine Ram Horn..Tobias, is the entire cover made of ram horn? Or is it a thin layer of genuine horn inlaid in acrylic? I'll show mine in a video soon - thanks again!
I wish Rough Rider had made their standard size Barlow with the rams horn bone. I have the Marbles rams horm Barlow and absolutely love it. If you have any pull at SMKW try to talk them into a single blade standard size Barlow preferably in a spear point.
I will contact them and pass along the thought. Not sure what, if any pull I have but they really should do it. You can also contact them via their online site smkw.com with the thoughts.
Gotta say I much prefer the real, natural Ram bone. So much character, nothing like it ~
Wow! Those ram horn tooth pick knives are nice! I am going to have to look into those :) As far as the rough ryder barlow, I have come very close to buying it several times, it is a nice looking knife! Be well partner!
Had I not has a thing for Daddy Barlows, I would've passed on this one. I saw Slick Slicers review of his Ram Rorn Bone knife and that convinced me to get it despite all the bill boarding. If someone does a video on how to remove quickly and safely blade etches and leave a blade with a mirror finish. I'll be on that video like a maggots on a gut truck. I'm so sick of everything having blade etches.
I'm not too fond of the etching either but none the less a good review. You own a rough rider French tickler right? If so,how do you like it? I was panning through your videos and I didn't see a review.
Beautiful knife! I need one..............lol
Hey, for $12.99 it looks pretty and pretty useful. There’s enough texture to that bone to hold it when wet. I agree the blade etch doesn’t do much for me. I almost clicked “notify me when it’s back in stock,” but I already have too many in my wish list. 😉
Yeah, Blade Etches are highly over rated.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias Do you like the RR Barlow with or without liners in the handle ?
@@propblast82nd , to be honest I'm indifferent. But I think the liner is basically some type of gap filling goop. I could be wrong, but that's what I think it is.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias That’s my thoughts as well. Since I’ve never owned one , thought I’d get your opinion. Thanks !😊
Rough Riders are guilty of over-billboarding to the point where it's become a defining characteristic of the brand.
That "Racoon knife' is rather good!
Yeah. I've been pretty vocal about the so-called slant "R" bolster that shows up on just about everything. When i thought it was just for one series, I thought "cool" But to see it everywhere is truly over-kill. And yeah. Not every knife needs a blade etch. The etch look like crap once you use the knife for a while.
Nice knife,it's a shame it has the emblem in the scale's as I have never had any success with them staying put over a long period of use, generally always fall out and you never see it when it does making glueing it back impossible.
I've had pretty good luck with the shields (except for Frost Brands and Bear & Son). But I have had shields drop from other brands as well. Only one or two so far from 200+ Rough Ryders but then many of those Rough Riders don't have shields. So in theory that could be 1% of knives have had a shield come loose. What I do know, is if you have a bad experience early on, any future bad experience is only compounded.
I just got a large barlow in the high plains line no shield plain handle has the R on the bolster and a plain blade ,no frost etching i am not a big fan of that. over all a very attractive knife . mod #rr2046 , i think you will like it.
Gary Lyons , I just ordered one a few minutes ago along with other National Knife Day purchases.
Is it rubbing the blade?
No lifetime warranty if you live outside the USA.
Bought over 40 Rough Rider knives and one was defective. Sent them an email and video of the defect and they completely ignored me. so to all my fellow Canadians buyer beware
Good to know. And considering the price of the knife, it really isn't worth sending it back to SMKW for them to replace it. The postage would be more than the knife and I'm not sure they'd reimburse you for that!
Do you like large toothpicks better than large Barlow's? And if so why
I do enjoy the large toothpick over the Daddy Barlow. I like the lines of the toothpick and find it much more pocket friendly. It is also capable of handling most of my every days tasks just as well as the Barlow. But it really comes down to looks, I won't deny that. And while a toothpick is better and cleaning and gutting fish and birds, I have no doubt that the daddy barlow would probably make a better all around camp knife because it has a sturdier blade with a wider belly. And it also so has some really sweet lines! But both are great and I can definitely see how the Barlow would be a person's favored knife!
Rough rider make good knives for the cost, but way to many logos on most of their stuff.
Although it's a very attractive knife, it would have been better in real Ram's horn.
Agreed. I'd love this in genuine ram horn.
Tobias may I get your email 📧? I’d like to ask you a couple questions if you don’t mind sir!
try knife.chat@yahoo.com
Definitely didn’t work:(
hapacha - oops! I meant. Knife.Chats@yahoo.com
I forgot the “s” at the end of chats. Sorry.
