@@judsonsnell Funny enough, most of the guys you see at NAMM are just doing guitar gymnastics and sweeping arpeggios left and right. I enjoyed that he just played through a couple of his tunes.
@@bdamotta Stephen and Greg Kubacki (Carbomb) were the two guys I looked forward to the most. I've always respected that Stephen clearly knows how to express himself thru guitar/songwriting more than many virtuosic players I've been around myself. Greg falls on the opposite end of the spectrum as far as actual technique/intensity goes, but describes his process and skill level largely the same. Absolute breath of fresh air these days.
Steph’s music is unbelievable because it comes from a place of passion. His genius is not in his technical abilities, it’s in his passion and emotional ones
Steph aging well. Always gave me confidence seeing such a cool player that admits he doesn’t get everything in the specs department or technical department.
Lead parts that makes sense are welcome. But the over used boring solos and shreds.. are just boring.. love Stephs style. Cos its built upon feelings.. not the typical shredder that just wants to show off technique.. high technique will never mean good music.. Steph is a talented song writer.. he's music certaily goes beyond !
You know what’s awesome about Stephen & Deftones!? He proves you don’t have to be a crazy flashy Shred guitar player to write awesome iconic songs, riffs etc with your own unique feel & vibe! You CAN be flashy & Shreddy but it doesn’t mean you HAVE to be! You can Create something tasteful and unique which ever way you choose to go!
One of the best Deftones albums.... Stephen's melodies...Chino's vocals were on point... the bass groves... drumming not overplayed... I forgot how much I love that song.
Steph is my hero. I can't tell you how many days I've spent researching his setup for guitar, like in depth reviews and research. I hope I could meet him some day and pick his brain.
I'm more into technical music these days but Steph will always be an influence for me with his simple yet heavy melodic style. Awesome to see him at namm even though he isn't a "shredder".. he doesn't need to be :)
Do any of you realize that KEN SUSI from UNEARTH is the Fishman spokesman. It's very cool to see him in this light. Hes a great guitar player. Hes always hustled hard for his band. I am glad to see him succeed outside of unearth!! Fluence pickups fucking rule.
Really like how steph and a few others are keeping the simplicity. I dont shred at all hardly anymore. Just find a groove and track it and refine. Good riffs pull shirts up!
I just watched the one recorded from the front. Thanks to this video, I now know what that dude looks like behind his phone. It's the dude to the far left at the front, behind mohawk dude. He's obviously holding a phone.
I play over complicated shit all the time and that doesn't work with a band that can't keep up. This guy has his shit together musically and doesn't need to get any better. I enjoyed this just as much as the shredders if not more
Always loved his tone, never oversaturated , such a clear drive if there's such a thing. I think he's a mesa boogie guy, his tone comes from amp and drive he uses. I think so...now I wanna look it up lol.
I thought this was a plug , but Carpenter doesnt give a fuck. Alot of people here are dogging on his sobriety. Who cares? We all have our shit. And fuck theory , this dude is expressing his own style. That's his philosophy. And if you think you are better....cool, make platinum! Sell out a show!Rock a crowd! But dont talk shit til the masses know your name. We know this guitarist's name. RESPECT. Stay high on life!
Steph stays with the rolly on haha. Guy is a walking juxtaposition in a good way. I was half expecting a fan at his feet to turn on when he started playing lmao
Its so funny watching these types of videos expecting slurs of arpeggios, scales and finger crawling solos then here goes stephen doing simple guitar chords holding it for couple of seconds. Its like a reminiscence of the first time you learned what chords are but yet hes rocking hard. So its all about the passion guys
What I cant wrap my head around is why does he put floyds on his esp 8 strings? Ive had 2 of his ltd models. His older 8 string that came with a hipshot bridge and emgs, and i had his more recent tele in sparkle green with the tonepros setup. Hardtails make so much more sense for what they do and his playing style. Its kinda cool to see an 8 string with a floyd because thats kinda rare but of every guitarist id expect to have that it wouldnt be him. If he needs tuning stability he couldve went with evertune or something. Or if he was after that floyd feel he couldve pulled a mick thomson lol. I just think its odd. A floyd on an 8 string for a guy who doesn't really shred or drop the bar ever. Weird. Just something i feel no one talks about tbh.
Shit man, I was there and didn't even know Stef was gonna be there. And the friend I shared the hotel with got in on an ESP endorsement and has his guitars built by the same luthier.
His first signature model was a six string. They brought it back for the 20th anniversary of Stef being with ESP. So even though he doesn't use them anymore, if you want the sound of the first 3 deftones records. You get the 6 string
fluence are great pickups, I played some recently. I still like my alumatones a little better, though. lighter. no battery. both are very clear, high output, high signal/noise ration.
I love Deftones and everything, brings back awesome high schools memories....but I have to say this, 9 strings to play single fretted notes? Gosh, guitar has really evolved in 15-20 years
I'm here to see how high Stephen is
Is he there? Yes? Then he's high as fuck. That's gotta be weird to stand there and karaoke your album on guitar at a trade show....
No, he wasn't

Absolutely. His melodic talent in great
Simple and effective, the band as a whole is a good fit for each other
And it comes through and SHINES in deftones.
Steph aging well. Always gave me confidence seeing such a cool player that admits he doesn’t get everything in the specs department or technical department.
He is the ultimate dudebro, I love him
Deftones will forever be my favorite band. Very few bands write songs with such passion. 💜
This!
The tones fucking rule
Agree
Been listening since the beginning wished I would’ve seen him more live!!!
Steph is the best dude. Always high as fuck and writes insane riffs. He's the shit.
Give it up for no stupid soloing, and also for Stephen having his own thing. Love it
Not a fan of solo?
Yeah, I too hate guitar solos
Been loving it for 29 years!

Solos are the best, you old farts.
Such a groovy guitarist. Love his ethereal guitar style
Stephen is a beast and a riffmaster. He has such an elegant approach to songwritting
ahahahahahahahahahahah 4 year old joke
Guitars aside, can we all agree that the snare in swerve city sounds amazing
That whole album. The drums are so crisp!
Steph always makes me want a 7 or 8 string. His collection is gorgeous.

Kinda wish the mix on stephs guitar was a lot louder. Could barely hear it over the songs. Still rad to see steph at an event like this tho.
Love his ESP he’s playing
Great looking guitar... still can’t get around a Floyd on an 8 string though xD but that’s what the tech is for! Lol
I saw Greg from Car Bomb in the crowd! That dude needs some fishmans
Laser fish
Carbomb is an awesome band!
🙃🙃🙃🙃
Yeah, man! Cool to see him banging head to Deftones)
Fucking Legend. Can't wait for the new album!
One of my favorite guitarist ever, not for his technique, which i think is good tho, but for what makes me feel with his music.
A legend.
Stef is a legend
One of the best Deftones albums.... Stephen's melodies...Chino's vocals were on point... the bass groves... drumming not overplayed... I forgot how much I love that song.
this is pretty much the guy that inspired me to start playing guitar 😂 deftones is so based and stephen is a chill beast. love it.
Two of my favorite guitar players right there! Stephen from Deftones & Ken from Unearth! :)
Love Stef so down to earth! Would love a mk2 set as he stated... Love the mk1 though. He is the reason I play 8 string and now 9
Fishman exec: I think we nailed it huh
Steph: Yea we nailed what i was looking for at the time
Fishman exec: *pees his pants a little*
Some guy in the front row is literally taking pictures with a Nintendo DS
What a legend
REALLY LMAO time stamp? i cant see
Lol Stephen's pink guitar is the same color ad my DS
Hipster swag bro!
That’s where we grew up listening to him punk son of a bitch!!!!!
Steph is my hero. I can't tell you how many days I've spent researching his setup for guitar, like in depth reviews and research. I hope I could meet him some day and pick his brain.

He's got a such unique vibrato.
He is Amazing, True talent. Like his mellow vibe

My dream guitars forever.MIJ esp block letter see thru green 6 and 7.
I dream of having either the white SRC or the black one with the binding
@@christmeister sad I dont have my black one anymore
STEFTONE!
Stephen playing is simple, smart and rich on dynamic range. Music is not about amount, is about quality.
I play over complicated shit all the time and that doesn't work with a band that can't keep up. This guy has his shit together musically and doesn't need to get any better. I enjoyed this just as much as the shredders if not more

Greg Kubacki out here thinking he can get away with blending into the crowd. We see you dude 😂
Hahah yeah
Yeah, came to the comments looking for this one.
Wait, so this is an ad for their pickups and there are ads in the video. What an age.
Where’s Deftones new album at?!!! Dying fr
Supposed to come out around April brobro I'm dying waiting too! The RUclips channel DeftonesLive posts updates sometimes
Sam Cardenas They said second half of 2020 and I’m just dying idk what to believe I JUST WANT TO HEAR A SINGLE AT LEAST 😩😩
Every day is another day less to wait boys!!
Such a unique style, cheers Steph Tone
Buenos arreglos, me inspira
What a great hiatus from the modern shred fest that takes place at events like these
2:57 some is gonna get fire.
Loved it. Both the video and the tone. I'm looking into your pickups for sure 😁
Greg from Car Bomb in the audience!!
stephen is an awesome musician
Steph is a chill dude
I love this man.
Best guitarist for a beast of a vocalist like Chino.

Right?? The dude is such a goddamnn innovator and has written the best riffs of the 21st century imo
Nice he played my 2 favorite songs by them
I have a set of the 6 string pickups they made for him. They’re not in a guitar yet, but I know they made them at least for a little while.
Best deftones song to demo
12:14 That dude just vigorously chewing his gum xd. Great show, loved it, Deftones forever \m/
Thats greg fron car bomb! There band is sick and he does a hell of a performance ar the fortin amp booth at namm look it up.
Swerve City
I had no idea Stephen was the first extended range artist to sign with Fishman? I would’ve assume it was Tosin.
9:26 Greg Kubacki headbanging to Swerve City made my day.
Was that Greg Kubacki at 9:25? Looks like the Guitar player for the band CAR BOMB.
Gotta love Swerve City.
If they would bring back the 6 string set that would be great!
Steph will always be a great influence for me, thats why I named my son Estefano ;D
stephen = simplicity
Love that he’s playing thru a Revv
Yeah no shit! That's cool! I couldn't tell at first so I screen shotted and zoomed in lol. I wonder what model.
@9:50 bottom left guy recording.... the total "look like im recording but I'm not" hes gonna love that pocket footage... lol
Can’t hear the live tone! So what’s the point??
✊ Respect for the passionate riffing and holding down the rhythm section!
Steph stays with the rolly on haha. Guy is a walking juxtaposition in a good way.

God damn, I love that song...
How about a set for the 6 string? Fluff has a set and I’d love to put a set in my SC-20. 🤷🏻♂️
Zzzsounds sells them through Reverb.
God ! i bet he's miserable without his fans. love Steph!!
Really dig the pink Horizon.

Stephen C: "I have zero six string in myne..*high AF* .."
ESP: here new 6 strings Stephen carpenter's signature in sonic blue for 2020"
Yeah, never understood this. I mean, I do but it's stupid.
✅

Notice he doesn't like to travel far from home? He gets paranoid about it.
Because he is a stoner! It's ok man, you can come out of your shell!!!! lol
I have is 7 string from a few years ago. Probably the best guitar I own. !!
It would be nice if he just play some riffs without the backing track so you can hear what the pickups sound like!
Yeah steph
fluence are great pickups, I played some recently. I still like my alumatones a little better, though. lighter. no battery. both are very clear, high output, high signal/noise ration.
that was cool:)

Cool.
Was the playing bit completely overdubbed by the studio recording during the edit?
Just seen a video of “Stevie Wonder” at this same convention!? Crazy to know two of my favorite musicians (Heroes) were there! #Stephdogg
Deftones!!!!
Honestly the fluence aren’t that different than the emg’s seems like it’s just a lotta hype after I tried them
I’m an EMG guy all the way, I run EMGs in most of my guitars, but I completely disagree with this statement
While He was playing, did anyone notice the Blond?
yup
giving him a nice head
