- As one of the most famous American folk songs, Freight Train stands out because of its poignant lyrics and smoothly rolling finger-picking guitar style. Elizabeth Cotten wrote it in her early teens, but she wasn’t “discovered” until she was in her 60s when this song quickly became a classic.
I wanted to play it in 7/4 because the melody fits very well. For accompaniment, I chose an Indian tabla sample tuned to the key of the song, which I feel also goes with the melancholy mood of the lyrics.

About “Seven Things in 7”: Odd time meters can be tricky to play in at first, but once you get familiar with them, that will change- each one has its own symmetry and swing. For me, 7/4 and 7/8 are two of the most comfortable odd time meters to play in. So I came up with this playlist showcasing different styles of music, all in 7/4 or 7/8. I hope you enjoy them and maybe give it a try yourself.

The Indian rhythm I played with is called Rupak. It is a rhythm of 3-2-2, but I reversed the emphasis and played it as if it were 2-2-3 to fit the tune. It’s kind of a sin to play Rupak backwards, so I hope my Indian friends will forgive me 😂
That is awesome indeed!
Are you planning on putting this track on your website?
Great use of Rupak Sir, I am a student of yours in Artist Works. Love and respect from India.
Rodrigo: Not for this one- I kept changing the backing track as I played along with it (that's why I was reaching down during the video).
Raktim: Thank you! I love Indian music. See you at the school!
Wow. Thanks Howard. A Great Take on a Great Song

You are awesome man awasome...India - Africa - America what a beautiful combination
Thank you!
amazing performance !
Thank you!
Love it, that was awesome! The shifted time accented different aspects of the melody, and the harmonies were wonderful. It is interesting also how trains are so very important still in India to the present day, so the fusion also works on a different level - approaching perhaps the romance associated with the freight train on a more global or abstract level, yet retaining aspects of the American harp blues tradition that has influenced worldwide music. In other words I dug it.
Thank you so much!
Another sweet rhythm More of a train sound with India music. Fresh and amazing
Many thanks!
Topissime!
So much happening here... homage, allusion, totally new interpretation, and you do it all justice. Wow.
Thank you.
Don’t tell me your shed is that clean and orderly. No wonder I’m stuck in 2nd position.
🤣
Are you playing three notes simultaneously starting at 4:30 ? Sounds like octaves ? Very nice !
Thank you- and what you heard was a drone with the tabla that I turned up at the end while I was playing an octave.
Actually, first I played a 5th and then spread out one more hole to play the octave.
