Swinging & Grooving in 7 | “Seven Things in 7”

- All The Things You Are- this standard tune has been covered by just about every jazz musician. Yet, hardly anybody does it in an odd time meter. This feels very comfortable to me; the beautiful chord changes seem to flow even more naturally when played in 7/4 and 7/8.
I did 2 versions of this song- one on a C harmonica, another one on a G harmonica and piano simultaneously. I soloed on the 1st one to a track with a swing feel; the 2nd one is much looser, with sections in free time, 7/4 and 7/8. (of course, both versions are 100% improvised)
About “Seven Things in 7”: Odd time meters can be tricky to play in at first, but once you get familiar with them, that will change- each one has its own symmetry and swing. For me, 7/4 and 7/8 are two of the most comfortable odd time meters to play in. So I came up with this playlist showcasing different styles of music, all in 7/4 or 7/8. I hope you enjoy them and maybe give it a try yourself.

Howard Levy is an exciting talent. It kills me when he plays harmonica and piano together.
Makes me think of that famous quote by so & so “ It’s one thing playing the harmonica , its another story being good at it “! This eats me everyday , but practice , practice , and you know the rest … it’s a lifelong thing . I once practiced essence to speed up my progression . It was going well , even started busking .. months went by , but t some point I recorded myself a few times , and In November I was very unsatisfied with 2 things . Rhythm and tone … Tone has grown much more since (8mths ago ) but rhythm is something else .. when it comes to the harmonica , I would say rhythm is number 1 , without it your lost ! Anyhow , I learned to just go with it , and if it’s meant to be , it all work out … In the meantime , I’m sure listening and appreciating music I never appreciated before . That’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough . Like the genius of ray charles and on and on .. anyhow thanks Howard some of us are really paying attention , even role playing like it’s the 50s just to really sound the best and of course promote the harp ! Once I started , I said I’m dying with this !!
Vous êtes un bijou !🙏❤️🙏
