    Hey guys, it's me, the Reviewer's holographic A.I. Sarah! Since the Reviewer has his side shows going these days, I want in on the action! So, let's take a quick look at early 2002 with one of the more...disturbing trends in game shows that year.

    This is an EXCELLENT idea, and the new Sarah's level energy
    (as well as her impeccable resemblance to Tamara Chambers) is AMAZING!
    "The Game Show Reviewer" (now franchise) is on fire for 2017 and beyond!

    I'm surprised Solitary didn't get mentioned. That was one that I kept wondering how they were getting away with producing.

    what about those "eject the loser" type of gameshows. like russian roulette, 101 ways to leave a gameshow or EXIT

    Oh, and I kinda guessed Sarah didn't review The Chamber.....from Wikipedia: ,"One contestant, Scott Brown, managed to survive all seven levels in the 'cold' chamber, and finished with $20,000--more than any other contestant on the show--by getting 20 correct answers. However, after his game, he was hospitalized and sued FOX and the producers of the show. The lawsuit was settled out of court, and Brown was awarded an additional $100,000 for compensation."

      Dick Clark had to take that to the grave with him... how sad...

    I think the Game Show Reviewer should review the FOX game show "Boom!," where the contestants had to cut the color-coded wire on the bomb with the correct answer, or else the contestant gets their shirt messy as a result of the explosion from choosing the wire with the wrong answers. It take the quiz show style elements of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" and adds a little pinch of that "Double Dare"-style mess factor.

    Commander, I think you forgot Cram which the contestants were deprived of sleep for over 24 hours.

    I missed the "quiz" part at first and thought this was going to be about shows like Fear Factor. That Chamber show sounds horrible and I'm glad I don't remember The Chair either. Good luck on more commentaries, Sarah!

    Though the "heart stoppers" were a bit much, I did like the concept of heart rate monitoring when answering questions and if contestants could keep cool under pressure. Did like the concept (and John MacEnroe was decent as the emcee). Chamber, though? Holy hell, when you have to have your contestants sign WAIVERS to play, something is wrong.
    And I love Sarah channeling her inner Nostalgia Critic here. Didn't know she had it in her. Was even waiting for the precision F-strike to come in. Need more of these, please! Won't tell the Reviewer at all!

    Loved the quick insight into the Million Dollar Era; great coverage. Millionaire, Weakest Link; FOX has an odd history with Game Shows, surprised that Greed wasn't mentioned before getting into the Chamber. At least it didn't last longer than $how Me The Money!
    Well done!

      Maybe because this about the "torture games," Not games that were torture to watch (To Tell The Truth 2018 comes to mind,).

    The Chamber was being made first, someone from ABC was in the audience, saw it, and then rushed their Chair to the air first.

    Surprised Fox's Greed, CBS's Survivor, or NBC's Dog eat Dog were not mentioned as they came along about this time too. But to be fair, they were focused more on eliminating players throughout the game similar to Weakest Link.
    Dog eat Dog even had one challenge which required holding your breath underwater the longest. The loser of that challenge ended up going to the hospital.

    Excellent first show (for Sarah, more please...). As for the Chamber, Dick Clark shoulda known better. More please. Maybe even a Point Counterpoint with GSR!

    Yeah, those shows were really terrible and borderline un-watchable. Even GSN tried their luck with “Cram” in 2003.
    Nice side show! I didn’t know Sarah’s character had so much passionate anger inside of her about this era....

    Well done, Sarah! Your new fan-friendly personality was nice to hear, and your witty asides were pitch-perfect. Also, interesting to see you covering this topic shortly after GSNN included these shows in a recent installment of their "Games Gone By" column. How is your general Internet access holding up on Tempest One?
    I absolutely loved "The Chair" during its original run, even though I only caught about two or three episodes before it disappeared. Say what you will about early millennial trigger warnings, but at least these guys ran a slicker, somewhat safer ship than "The Chamber." I never actually saw any episodes of that show, but reading about it years after the fact, it doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Yeah, having your contestant nearly DIE during the game is not what I would call a good time. It's almost as bad as that one Russian show where contestants who lost were stranded in Siberia.

    Question: Would Fox's 'Solitary' count as a game show?

    • @FundipYoshi
      @FundipYoshi 7 лет назад +1

      Solitary is a reality show!

    • @FormerMrApple
      @FormerMrApple 7 лет назад +1

      I would consider it a "Reality Gameshow" a mix of the two.

    • @FundipYoshi
      @FundipYoshi 7 лет назад +1

      No, Solitary is a Reality show, as it eliminates contestants one week at a time. Fear Factor is more of a "Reality Gameshow". Solitary is a competitive reality show!

  • @deralmighty8011

    TBH, I never found either of these shows that bad. The Chair got boring after like 3 or 4 live alligators were dropped onto unsuspecting players, and the concept of controlling a bodily function as part of the game was actually kind of cool. Certainly better than that British game show where the contestants once had to urinate to answer questions, or that Japanese show where you had to have sex in front of a live audience. Yep. Those were both things.
    The Chamber had issues with the host just being a prick, having a rushed concept, and low production value. However, as someone who has personally experienced extreme cold temperatures, 30 below for 7 minutes doesn't seem all that bad. I mean, if someone is willing to subject himself to that for a cash prize, I see no issues. The question format also wasn't bad. Where it became an issue, I think, was in the unaired episodes, which supposedly included a tornado chamber, a water torture chamber, an insect chamber, and an electric chamber. A simulated tornado doesn't seem like good stakes, most people who have been waterboarded got used to it pretty quickly, and insects are only effective against people with legitimate fears, who at the same time could be trusted not to hurt them in reaction. The only thing that I feel really crossed the line was that electric chamber thing. That was clearly a mistake.
    But yeah. I find it amazing how many people are so offended by these concepts. I'd certainly rather watch these shows than that Slime Time kids show from the early 90s or Temptation.

    I actually liked the Chamber. I was, and still am, a game show enthusiastic and I actually watched all three episodes. I liked the concept, but the execution was sorely lacking and it showed. Someone actually went to the hospital after the show and got compensated for it. The "torture" aspect should have been subdued significantly. I think that having a cold and hot setting is ok, but not to what they had it (extreme level), but for the other chambers rumored, I think the best one would've been the insect one, as that isn't dangerous or really harmful (thinking that none of the insects were harmful), it's just mind over matter. Having scaled down chambers or chambers like the insect one, would've been better and less harmful. I am thinking like Fear Factor chambers or 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show/Crystal Maze chambers, not 100+ degrees with spinning and shaking or below 0 with shaking, water spraying, and the like...
    All in all, it was an attempt to get into the game show scene, but it failed. They just needed to scale it down to Fear Factor levels and it probably would've been a "hit".
    As for the Chair. It is categorized as a "torture" game show, but it's not. Alligators, flashing lights, fireworks isn't torture, it just trying to make their heart rate go up. They could've quit at any time and leave with nothing, it just their mind wanting to go thru that "adventure". (Yes I did watch this one as well!)
