Deicide are one of the rare exceptions. They have money. At least enough to pay an even decent artist to give them something that's more than sufficient. Not all, but most artists actually listen to Death Metal (Metal in general). So, a lot of them would be more than willing to add a Deicide album cover to their resume at a discount. If need be. If they had to. But Glen alone has the funds needed to pay for an album cover. I'm also not surprised they went this route, though. He has a reputation of being a tight wad. They make more than just a living.

Covers like Tales From The Thousand Lakes, In the Nightside Eclipse, Blessed Are The Sick, At The Heart of Winter, Abigail, Powerslave, etc, are part of the DNA of metal. But as music moves to a more single track, jump around on a digital playlist format will the album cover lose its importance?

I would never even entertain having artwork for my music be done by AI. The cover is supposed to represent the visual aspect of the experience. You might as well use prompts for the music then too. Punch in the bpm, time signature and key, drum style for each part, and generate. It would actually be easy to prompt the vocal patterns for Benton too since he has like one template. Feed the morons what they want if they are still buying Deicide records in 2024 anyway.

Remove the human element at any stage of creation, and it ceases to be a work of art. It's just another commodity or product. The year is 2055. You wake up on your birthday and a hologram of Glen Benton enters your bedroom to wish you a happy birthday, tells you to hail satan, and proceeds to remind you that your own personal Deicide album is available to purchase. Every metalhead received an AI Deicide album on their birthday this year, complete with unique artwork. You either have to listen to a commercial between each song, or you have to pay for it outright.

I’m curious the degree to which budget played into this. This particular Deicide record is on a one album deal so it might be possible that there wasn’t a lot of money in the budget for production etc. perhaps they thought it was better to put the money into say making a video and go bare bones on the album cover in the hopes that having visual accompaniments would help push the album. Maybe the album is also AI generated, in which case great, I can just throw it straight into the trash. Why even have people, if people aren't making it, then why have people looking or listening to it, just make AI listen to it, go full vertical integration. AI has no emotional investments, no tastes, no preferences, it'll do whatever without any bias, or more specifically point of view. Nothing will inspire it, no need for humans at all in this process. For example I got to do some album artwork, once for a band and another time for a movie soundtrack and guess what I did, I listened to the album, what did it make me feel, what visuals did I gravitate to, what was the mood, all of that was pretty important. For the soundtrack I watched the movie, it was pretty bad, but the music was fun, so how do I make the art both reference the movie and also capture the feeling of the music, well that sounds like some research and a fun problem to solve. Well unfortunately sometimes people decide that the end product is the only thing that matters and they also don't really care what it is as long as it sorta captures some vague cliche and oh boy will AI provide.
In the words of Stavros Halkias "How did fucking computers become the thing machines became the thing that does art and humans were the ones in fucking Amazon warehouses, like shouldn’t the robots be working so we can paint? Why aren’t the robots the fucking slaves, how are humans the fucking slaves, we should have lives of leisure with the AI, it should be coolest thing of all time.”

What they're saying to their audiences that they don't actually care about creativity expression they would rather give money to a corporation who trains machines to steal from artists than support passion and creativity and if that's how they feel I'm never going to listen to another deicide song.

Apologies for the late response. Just coming back to these comments now. Hmm, interesting question. I’d argue that non-commissioned, yet genuinely painted or drawn art pieces are still a step above AI art, as the artists can at least choose art that will fit their aesthetic and their album’s theme, plus the original artwork actually came from someone’s intellect and talent, as opposed to a robot that is forced to spit something out in seconds.
That said, the money thing is still an issue with that, and it’s nowhere near as preferable as commissioning original art, and it’s nowhere near as cool.

So we are just speculating that it was done "easily". Second, i remember around the turn of the millennium, suddenly a lot of cover art began having this new (at the time) cheap digital art style (i didnt like it), because everyone was getting, and using computers. I just wanted to mention that. Its sort of a simuler wave (in the arts). And thirdly, at the end of the day, a fitting cover DOES matter, but number one is the music. Who knows if the band was even "in on it". They signed with a new company called RPM, "for the development and marketing of the new album", according to google. Anyway great video! Keep metal METAL!

I have a few thoughts here:
While I don't agree with the assessment that using AI to generate the cover art is inherently bad, I'm genuinely curious why everyone seems to be starting the conversation with the presumption that Deicide ever specifically cared about, hand-picked, or otherwise took great care in selecting their cover artwork. Is there any evidence to support this position or is it just as likely that they have some (hypothetical) intern at the record label manage their artwork and say "good enough" when it's presented to them? I just think it's an interesting assumption to make, with as far as I can tell, minimal supporting evidence.
I also wonder what everyone's thoughts would be if the artwork had turned out amazing and then it later came out that it was AI generated. Does the fact that we mostly all agree that it's boring have an impact on how this was perceived?
What about bands that use artwork in the public domain (e.g. Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick), does any/all of this same thought process and arguments apply in those cases? Does it extend outward to other areas of the music and production such as using drum machines or digital instrumentation? Where is the line drawn and why?
All of that said, I am definitely in agreement that the chosen artwork is generic and uninteresting and would probably also prefer something hand-made by an artist, but I don't agree that it has to be or that artists have a right for it to be.

    • @Altars_of_Mattness
      @Altars_of_Mattness  5 месяцев назад +1

Interesting questions! To your first point, I’m perhaps under the illusion, but I expect nevertheless that the band at least picks their artwork. The thought of having someone from the outside doing it seems equally as lazy as if they had generated the AI artwork themselves. The public domain point is interesting, and admittedly a bit of a grey area, however for covers like ‘Blessed…’, it’s painted, creative and it fits the sort’ve Lovecraftian vibe of some of the songs on the album itself. It seems like an actual artistic decision as opposed to the “that’ll do” approach.
If the artwork was amazing, then I’d hold my hands up, however 10/10 times I can pretty much guarantee it’ll come out with overly digitised crap regardless of whether or not it looks generic. My view would remain the same on whether or not it should be used, as real artists have been replaced and it’s a lazy approach whichever way you wish to look at it. These are all good points though. I’d be curious to hear others’ takes on these! Cheers for taking the time to comment 🤘🏼

Nice to hear your thoughts on this Matt. AI is just taking over everything now, when you can get AI to make a video script for you, and get an AI voice to speak the video for you, what chance have we got??
But when it comes to bands using AI artwork, you're right, it's cheap and lazy. Especially for a band as big as Deicide, you'd think they would be against this crap. I guess they can do what they want, whether we like it or not, I don't think Glen really cares. But for me, I made my own artwork for my first solo project. Even though I learned Photoshop on the job, and it looked rubbish, I'd much rather have that than AI art make it for me! And I'd much rather have someone with real artistic talent, either graphic designer or physical artist to make my album art any day! 😊🤘🏻

Cheers for commenting your thoughts, Josh! From what I’m seeing, there’s no chance it’ll replace the quality of what real people can accomplish artistically, as it’s unable to capture the emotion and thought process that makes a lot of art what it is. However, it definitely has the convenience factor that makes it alluring. It’s cheap, it’s easy, and it’s very very quick.
Exactly mate! Even if it looks shit, you at least had a creative direction you wanted to explore and you tried to execute it. That’s what it’s all about!

Yeah, making AI art is very cheap and easy, and if it carries on real artists with real talent will out of work!
Ha yeah man, I had a clear vision of what I wanted, even if the execution wasn't great, I tried to do it myself. And for the complete edition I actually got someone who is good at Photoshop to help me fulfil my vision! Cheers man 😊 🤘🏻

I agree using AI for album covers is quite a statement of how important you think it is as an artist, despite the fact it costs more or less.
That said, are we to blame the artist first or think of this as one of those "Sign of the times" situations?
I am not fully aware of the finances of Pestilence or Deicide and how much of what they win comes from live shows vs streams vs merch vs something else. But if you know that most of the people who will listen to the songs (I am talking about overall numbers, not the true death metal ghetto) will just do it out of spotify and then you'll be asked to do a Legion Tour again instead of the new songs, then I sort of get it.
This is shitty as it gets, I just believe that we are much more down to blame the artist first than thinking what we do to support the industry and the underground genres (not about OP, he talks about Pre-Ordering so I'm certain he does support the bands he love, I'm talking in general)

It’s especially disappointing to see a band in the metal genre use it, since metal has always been the genre that more than any other, lifts up and exhibits illustrations/artists. John Baizley, Arik Roper, Ed Repka, Derek Riggs, Vince Locke, Zbignew Bielak, Andrew Bouzikov, Necrolord, David D’Andrea, Tim Lehi, Santos, etc etc. Disgusting to see a band like Deicide, who worked with Bielak on their last album even, follow it up with this soulless robot monstrosity.

It feels like Deicide just doesn't care about physical copies and just cares for streams on some platform. Even if the album turns out to be good, I would NEVER pick it up in vinyl or in CD with that shit ont it. It definitely is devoid of artistic vision, and I dislike the fact that they don't use artists that are tied to the scene. Or even get a new artist to do shit, ... Just try. Also, it definitely is a problem to the whole scene when a band that big uses that kind of cover art. It screams lazy, cashgrab for sure.

Deicide may just have pulled a master stroke.
Let’s be honest only a small part of their audience/fan base buys physical media.
But they have the world and his wife on social media talking about them. Which will carry over into streams etc. You may not agree but a lot of bands have pretty shit merch. ‘Hello Morbid Angel’. Would I buy a T-shirt of the cover… well no. Nor would I buy a Cannibal Corpse T-shirt.
Most people who hear this album won’t have much of a clue of the sort work, it’s just the way music is digested these days. I wonder what reaction the cover would have got if there hadn’t been any mention of AI. King’s artwork is shit. People have moved on from it.
I appreciate and support the idea of paying creative artists for album covers and merch but they aren’t cheap at all. And cut massively into what little the bands makes.
Metal has always had its share of shit art work. Kill em all great album… piss, lazy album c.over which was done without much thought and at the last minute.
As for blind buying in a record store, not many people do that these days. For most artists they sell direct to their audience. So people have already listened on RUclips or bandcamp to free tracks.
As for the future of course some bands will go down this line but very few. As music and releases are a labour of love with not much expectation that it will make them a good living. Or to be fair any living.
Many projects don’t tour at all or sell merch at all.
Especially in the BM realm. It’s just not worth it financially.
I may well be the outlier, but I’m in my 50s I don’t care too much about album covers. It’s the music that counts. Ask me to describe album after about covers after about 2000 and I’d be struggling for 95% of albums.Deicide are dead to me, have been since Once upon a cross. However very well argued video with genuine passion.
Maybe my fingers were burned to much in the 80s when you’d pick up a cool covered album get it home and it was generic shit.
    I think I’ve ranted enough.

You raise unbiased points that I imagine went through the band’s head whilst coming up with this cover art. It just doesn’t sit right with me at all. It just pushes the obvious into view once and for all. Deicide are obviously around primarily for the money at this point, but they fully confirmed it with the use of AI. It just screams “I don’t care, let’s just get this out so idiots throw money at us”. Bands have to make money to live, but there are so many better ways to go about it than this. I genuinely think they would sell more if they had a ‘better’ cover and it would sort out the cost of a commissioned piece of art anyway! For me, art is important, but of course as you say the most important thing is the music. If you half arse your cover art though, which is really the easy part when you think about it, then I imagine the same will be the case with the music. I haven’t loved anything the band has done for a little while now, but I’m still on board and I still expect better than this dumpster fire! Cheers for taking the time to drop your take here. Prepare to be disappointed, I think this is going to become the new thing and having people actually draw a cover will become a niche like people actually buying physical media these days, the AI will improve but most albums in the future will likely be AI generated, it's much faster for someone to just type a sentence into a generator than have somebody draw exactly what you have in mind.
That said I think physical drawing will still have an audience, likely a lot bigger than people buying physical media, it won't ever disappear completely, just maybe in relation to music it will be more rare.

I'm just happy there's a new Deicide album out. I have all their other albums and will buy this one too. It's not just about the cover art. It's about owning and having a hard copy of the music I like to listen to in lossless quality and not relying on some bullshit streaming service to keep it up in shitty mp3 quality on their server (with the option to remove access to it at any time) for me to be able to listen to it.

The reason I dislike it isn’t just because it’s AI per se, but rather, because to my eyes it looks like absolute garbage AND it was done using AI. There are two factors making this a worthless piece to own physically. Yeah, the music is important, obviously, no dispute there, but the cover is also important when it’s me who is spending my earned money on a physical copy that I’ll want to look at. It’s also a bit of an indicator to me that the music is going to be just as slapdash and lazy. I hope I’m wrong, and I’ll listen to it, but it’s not going into the collection.

The only justification I could think of is maybe a new band is strapped for cash and puts all of their funding into production. At second thought, I imagine seeing any AI album art for the first time I would more than likely skip over that band. For a new band to start out with such a lack of understanding of the art and metal scene, it would be a pass for me.
So it’s crazy to me that the almighty deicide would even think that ai is enjoyable let alone think people would buy that piece of shit fake art.

I almost agree with you there, however I’d rather a new band just try and do it themselves. At least make it look like you care! As you say, I’d skip over a new band doing that as well. If a band other than Deicide put that on their cover, I’d immediately write it off as uninspired, paint by numbers (pun not intended), overproduced swill

@@Altars_of_Mattness I do agree with new bands at least trying, I wasn’t trying to express that at all. lol
There are many different artistic avenues for bands to go down where they can convey what they are trying to say musically. A picture of forest, or just a picture of the band themselves. Hell I’d take a shitty doodle of a corpse before I accept this ai garbage.
With all that said, it seems the backlash has reached somebody, because the artwork on Spotify has already been changed.

It’s generic, digitised garbage. Unbelievable that they thought it was a good idea. Exactly! Then at least they’d have tried something a bit different, and with some actual authenticity. Getting AI to do it is like palming it off to someone else “you sort the artwork and we’ll do some music and hope it fits”. No excuse for Deicide. Cheers Roger 🤘🏼🤘🏼

Artists are notoriously bad at organizing, but unless there is some effort to stop this bullshit and have integrity to the purpose of art as a realm of human endeavor, any artist engaging in this garbage is digging their own grave.
