My roommate who’s a medical student told me that the reason for the uncanny valley was probably just to keep us from going near dead bodies and getting sick
4:58 ok but that's definitely how gaster would look from everyone else's perspective, he's been stuck in a void and mangled beyond time and space, you cannot convince me even if he's peaceful this isn't how he looks to everyone in game
The uncanny valley thing is likely to do with death and disease, this is backed up by how many depictions of classic horror monsters are just exaggerations of what disease, both genetic and contagious, can do to the body. It is evolutionarily advantageous to see a person who has been ravaged by a deadly disease and not want to go anywhere near them
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. As an artist, I've seen plenty of "scary" art, but they're not subtly uncanny enough to make you REALLY scared.
The uncanny valley was also useful for us to notice if there was someone in the group with a deficiency, and to not let that person hold the group down (euphemism for abandoning or killing). Especially if this strange person was different due to a contagious disease. And, to complement, almost everyone forgets that we weren't the only human species to be around at the time, so this also adds up to the explanation.
Was already enjoying the video, but I gotta say, nothing made me hit subscribe and the bell faster than hearing that Legend of Dragoon music at 3:34. We love to see a man of culture around these parts.
I think the reason for the uncanny valley is that when different human species existed at the same time, homo sapiens or other species were scared of other human species as they were a threat to them
The "humanoid fish moment" actually is'nt talking about the Japanese human like fish! Its talking about an scp called the shy guy. You cant look at its face, so obviously there were'nt any drawings of its face. But some researchers just grabbed some random guy and put him in a submarine with a picture of the thing, carefully taken so that they person that made the picture did'nt look at the shy guys face. And some drawing supplies. The person in the sub began drawing and looking at the picture of the shy guy. He drew the picture of the shy guy. And when he finished, of course he did look at the picture of the shy guy, so the scp was just heading towards him. The scp broke the submarine and ripped the guy to shreds. The end.
8:25 this post is talking about an experiment done with scp 096, where a d class (criminal) is asked to draw a picture of scp 096’s face. However, seeing scp 096’s face directly or through video or photo is a death sentence
Things in nightmares doesnt scare me so can we still call them nightmares. I have once had shadow figures in my dreams that constantly stare and dont move though when I try to hit them or touch them it woke me up. I could exit the dream whenever I can by touching them like a literal exit door.
im pretty sure that the reason that the uncanny exist is because that there used to be many species that were very very similar to humans like 100,000 years ago, and here is the reason i believe this, we know that there were around 7 species of different kinds of humans that werent humans, like neanderthals.
8:27 Oh no, that was not a humanoid fish moment, that was a horror much much worse. He is the embodiment of wrath and anger and will hunt down any who make the mistake of looking into his cold, lifeless eyes. This is a certified shy guy moment.
1:30 My theory is that it comes from wars, and people in a war would have to look out for people who were similar to them, but with differences. (eg. skin color, face shape, accent)
5:07 IM surprised they didn’t use any music that would fit gaster a little better because the skeleton looking man with cracks up and down from both eyes is gaster. The what is thought to be the dad of sans and papyrus, maybe.
I've heard (and personally believe) the uncanny valley became a fear to us because, we weren't the first intellegent life, there existed other spapiens like neanderthals which as far as we know werem't quite but acted like us, and thus we developed the unacnny valley to be able to see the differennce between us and them.
The Uncanny Valley, the Sense of Wrong, and many other, what some would call 6th senses of the human body are on one hand a defense mechanism to protect against unknown dangers... The worst part... Our brains cant disasociate the images from reality from how hard wired that is... Meaning no matter what, unless you suffer some mental issues or have one of the strongest wills in the world... You will always feel something when seeing these images... Because its how our brains are wired to feel...
The uncanny valley probably has somthing to do with things like bears, because we were once very hairy, and so were bears, we probably would have to remind oureselfs that their not us. (remember we were much dumber back then)
My theory about uncanny valley: it is mechanism that had its start when some psychological disorders started to be. Man with these can cause a lot of damage to the village: kill someone important, burn down the crops or just distracting from work. Because of that, we were in need of uncanny valley to detect crazy people and banish them by the way they behave.

The boltzman one is kinda fake and true, for example if you ask someone "do you believe this" and they say yes or no, do you think your brain would make up that question and this theory, especially if you cannot comprehend a lot of knowledge.
The uncanny valley probably has something to do with our fear of the unknown, as we're unable to read the intentions of somebody with an "uncanny" appearance, marking them as a possible danger.
Makes sense, anything that looks uncanny is unknown to the brain and it defaults to thinking its a threat because that would give us the highest survival chance
My theory is that it's just our brain trying to play trick with us, our brain likes to make humanoid objects from anything and then after creating a humanoid avatar in our mind we think it's a person but it's not. So it starts us to make feel unease or uncomfortable, it is a uncanny valley effect.
@@ai8788 Well, we know each other to the extent that we are both human beings. That will (most likely) not be a threat. So as long as you aren’t a zombie or something the uncanny valley will not take effect.
Re: things that look human but aren't--corpses, dude. Human corpses. Unless they died of some disfiguring condition/in a violent way, most dead humans look like regular humans, but a little off. @kevin we literally fucked neanderthals until there were no more and they were integrated into homosapiens. trust me we had the OPPOSITE issue with them
Fun fact: the story at 8:15 was an experiment run by the SCP Foundation to test how SCP 096 could handle water. The whole concept of this character is that if anyone else on the planet sees his face, he instantly knows exactly where they are and how to get to them as fast as he possibly can. Pretty terrifying if you ask me, given that there are indeed images of him on the internet.
There's actually fantastic crack fuel here. For example, what if the person who sees his face is currently on the ISS? Or if he only wants to get to them to give them a hug?
8:10 that's SCP 096. The water experiment. They made a random class D go underwater. They gave the class D a picture of 096 and was told to draw jt. Then the scientist told him to brin the photo and put the drawing in the metal try to go back to the surface. After done. 40 minutes went past when a screaming slowly crept through the submarine. The class D eyes outside the window and radios back panicking... no response. The white man smashed through the metal bubble and the D class was unresponsive... forever.
For those curious, the coordinates listed in the image at 4:26 actually lead to a very forested area in the middle of Yellowstone National Park. It looks very secluded, there isn't a thing nearby except for trees for miles. It really makes you think if something truly is hidden there...
The nutty putty cave story is even scarier to think when you read up that many of the rescue crew theorized John possibly survived after his rope snapped, and because he was so far down and assumed dead, they sealed the hole up meaning he could've suffocated.
@@wolfetteplays8894 Are you insane? It was clearly extremely dangerous and it was a tourist attraction. They where also never able to recover his body.
Everyone has already pointed out the uncanny valley being caused by the fear of human corpses which is probably the main reason we experience it. But another fun theory I’ve heard before is how we me feel off when seeing something vaguely human is because our human ancestors had to compete with other similar species of human that almost looked like us such as Neanderthals which we eventually outcompeted and/or killed off. In fact some even speculate this bias against other primates still exists today because of this which is why some people find apes and chimps uncomfortable to look at
@@yippee.skippyx3 It's worth noting that most neanderthals you've seen came in the form of an artist's interpretation, like wax figures and 3D renderings, which can be uncanny even when rendering normal people. Most people have some neanderthal DNA, ergo our ancestors likely thought neanderthals were actually sexy beasts to get it on with at any cost.
The boltzmann brain theory is one that has always had me thinking since i was a toddler. Literally I genuinely believed that when I was three. It's like all a sudden one day as a toddler my brain just came up with this crazy thought and now i've never viewed "life" the same. You are alone. Nothing is real. Couldn't get more "relatable" than that.
The Boltzman brain theory sounds so stupid to me, like given time being like fucjing infinite (which I’m pretty sure it ain’t because the universe will be destroyed by black holes and shit) but isn’t it just equally as likely for earth to exist or for millions of other brains to exist
@@Traveler_202 yea you're right, but you said isn't it equally as likely for earth to exist just as others exist. I do believe that the concept of earth being how we perceive it is just as likely as people being how we perceive them, however, I believe that both possibilities are both very, very low. I mean, there are abt 8 million people in this world vs quadrillions of quadrillions of completely different possible theories; which means that if one person were to conclude one possible answer as to why we are here, that then puts that answer into one out of quadrillions of quadrillions of possible answers out there. My point is, the chances of any theory regarding reality being remotely correct is unimaginably low, and the chances of our perception of reality being true is again, unimaginably low.
Weird. The first and really only time I got existential was in 2nd grade on the playground when I realised, hey bro, you're the brain in THIS body, of all bodies you could have been in, and this how you view the world.
@@Stephanie-mv9iy someone said it. like every human and animal has an entire life, an entire consciousness behind their eyes. They all are the main character in their life, the life they've known for all their existence. even when someone dies, there are still billions of other humans who perceive themselves as "I." And that's just including humans. thoughts only get deeper from there to the point where you cant explain them in English words...
At 8:43 the post being read is actually part of the plot of the "Remembrance of Earth's Past" trilogy by Cixin Liu, a trilogy of novels about the collapse of the Human race after extraterrestrial contact via radio waves. Its a really cool series if you wanna read it.
5:02 i'm glad you used the fnaf vhs/"sound of 3AM" sound for this meme since that's the only thing i can visualize Gaster's face with after seeing this on TikTok
i believe the uncanny valley phenomenon had something to do with early rabies outbreaks! if someone you knew was behaving strangely, had weird facial expressions, etc or just seemed to have something Wrong With Them, we learned that they were likely violent and infectious (with rabies most commonly).
Same with anyone who's generally sick Cause their eyes usually look sunken and their skin gets pale and stuff Probably made it so you associate unusual appearances and behaviour with sickness and danger
I think some people forget that there were other human species, as they looked very similar to Homo sapiens. We could’ve gotten that uncanny instinct when we saw other human species thinking that they weren’t “human” to them
Unlikely, as we bred with them. A very likely theory however is dead bodies (who could spread diseases) and rabies (hightly infectious and agressive disease)

Lmao and that thing straight up dove and swam to the bottom of the ocean to get him. That's wild
Horrifying to imagine but at the same time sounds a little funny to me for some reason
So how'd that go? *Not too well I assume.*
There's actually fantastic crack fuel here. For example, what if the person who sees his face is currently on the ISS? Or if he only wants to get to them to give them a hug?
@@poltive I think I remember reading something that said he actually can get someone in space. He just swims in space or something
The white man smashed through the metal bubble and the D class was unresponsive... forever.
there is a phenomenon for this situation which i would like to call, a skill issue
They did arms,torso,legs,than head
This is the most difficult to understand comment I've ever read.

For those curious, the coordinates listed in the image at 4:26 actually lead to a very forested area in the middle of Yellowstone National Park.
It looks very secluded, there isn't a thing nearby except for trees for miles. It really makes you think if something truly is hidden there...
What would you think on there beside bodies?
And whats worse is you cant go there without a team of people because you dont know if the person who put the bodies there is still there...
Right off of the West Thumb too... Now I'm concerned.
1.14 Miles away from Thumb Geyser.
HOW DID THEY FIND THE BODIES I BURRIED, FUCK, FUCK, GOD DAMMIT
The nutty putty cave story is even scarier to think when you read up that many of the rescue crew theorized John possibly survived after his rope snapped, and because he was so far down and assumed dead, they sealed the hole up meaning he could've suffocated.
Damn
that is f |_| c |< ing terrifying
They shouldn’t have sealed it up. A bunch of snowflakes smh
@@wolfetteplays8894 Are you insane? It was clearly extremely dangerous and it was a tourist attraction. They where also never able to recover his body.
Yeah, his corpse still lays there today now
Everyone has already pointed out the uncanny valley being caused by the fear of human corpses which is probably the main reason we experience it. But another fun theory I’ve heard before is how we me feel off when seeing something vaguely human is because our human ancestors had to compete with other similar species of human that almost looked like us such as Neanderthals which we eventually outcompeted and/or killed off. In fact some even speculate this bias against other primates still exists today because of this which is why some people find apes and chimps uncomfortable to look at
For that last one, I find chimps unsettling to look at because they are literal satan.
This makes sense because something about looking at Neanderthals makes me uncomfortable.
@@yippee.skippyx3 It's worth noting that most neanderthals you've seen came in the form of an artist's interpretation, like wax figures and 3D renderings, which can be uncanny even when rendering normal people.
Most people have some neanderthal DNA, ergo our ancestors likely thought neanderthals were actually sexy beasts to get it on with at any cost.
dude this is so good. that is a really good point
that is exactly what I was thinking
They all are the main character in their life, the life they've known for all their existence. even when someone dies, there are still billions of other humans who perceive themselves as "I." And that's just including humans. thoughts only get deeper from there to the point where you cant explain them in English words...
the boltzmann brain hypothesis is just an overcomplicated way of thinking the world revolves around you
At 8:43 the post being read is actually part of the plot of the "Remembrance of Earth's Past" trilogy by Cixin Liu, a trilogy of novels about the collapse of the Human race after extraterrestrial contact via radio waves. Its a really cool series if you wanna read it.

8:20 isn’t that an scp-096 experiment? A tattoo artist had to draw 096 as best as possible to see if you can look at its face if it’s drawn
Yup
And 3008 was in here too

Is it in the zone where no laws apply?
@@butterdogestarwars6709 considering how it's relating to dead bodies, probably
i believe the uncanny valley phenomenon had something to do with early rabies outbreaks! if someone you knew was behaving strangely, had weird facial expressions, etc or just seemed to have something Wrong With Them, we learned that they were likely violent and infectious (with rabies most commonly).
Same with anyone who's generally sick
Cause their eyes usually look sunken and their skin gets pale and stuff
Probably made it so you associate unusual appearances and behaviour with sickness and danger
Probably not. Evolution takes A WHILE and I just don’t see there being enough time.
@@kickrun7709 exactly

I think some people forget that there were other human species, as they looked very similar to Homo sapiens. We could’ve gotten that uncanny instinct when we saw other human species thinking that they weren’t “human” to them
We interbred with them. The uncanny valley is an evolutionary aversion to dead bodies.
Unlikely, as we bred with them. A very likely theory however is dead bodies (who could spread diseases) and rabies (hightly infectious and agressive disease)
