  • This photograph from 1911 captures the Begum of Bhopal walking by at a ceremony to greet the British monarchy in full purdah. She was the only Indian woman ruler present at the ceremony, belonging to a unique princely state, which witnessed the rule of a long line of begums.
‘Picture This’ is The Swaddle’s series, where we take a closer look at the story behind a famous photograph.

I guess you lack education cause Lakshmi didn't fight for India she only fought cause her son Anand Rao was not recognised as the successor to the throne. So basically she fought so she won't lose her kindom she didn't give a damn shit what the British were doing to the civilians and yes it's written in the book provided by India only cause that's the truth.

"This moment captured in the photograph" is a "unique moment" in "Indian History" where the rule of a long line of Indian women "were embraced by the Indian public" and the British monarchy alike. Hmm nope. Incorrect statement.
Indian public had ages ago embraced the rule of many Indian Women. And we haven't forgotten them yet. Nor their Valor. The reason she could become sultan in a long line of women rulers is because she was in India.
You wanted to say because she showed up in Delhi Durbar, she was embraced by the British Monarchy. That means she did not fight the British. Therefore it is a unique moment (to be embraced by the British). Because all other women rulers predating her did fight against the British.
And according to you though she is in full "pardah", she is "progressive", and brought some much needed futuristic "reforms", did some vaccination drives (I suppose that was possible by serving under the British rule), she got grant from the king for "popular education" ie she must have helped the British to replace and overthrow the traditional education system.
Did the British save the praja of Bhopal from any harm? They were taken care of I suppose while everyone else was dying of famine and cholera?

U forgot what time he is talking about. It is progressing as per the Time.
If she dint did parda then she might not be able to rule. As it happened with razia sultan who was extremely out spoken, bold and used to come out in public without parda but everyone turned against her. The molvie ministers who were also known as "king makers" as they were the ones who decided whom to keep or not they turned against them. They also hated the fact that she dint wanted to become their puppet like other rulers and she chose to brake through it but she faced wars and attacks from all sides and at the end her own brother killed her.
Although she was loved by ppl due to her extremely progressive thoughts and unbiased ruling still power was with ministers and other greedy ppl who dint saw the benifit of civilians. Eventually rule of zariya turned out the shortest ruling period in history. All because she thought that she can control everyone singlehandedly which not possible. It's like one person fighting against entire nation. Practically its impossible
So some times u need to take steps as much as required and acceptable to bring long term Change

There's more to her personality than just her attire. Her choice of clothing makes her no less than anyone else.
One can be progressive while covering in entirety one's body or not covering it at all.
      It's simply a matter of one's choice.
Also one's clothing has nothing to do with one's progressive attitude. Anyone can exercise his/her fundamental Right to Privacy to any extent whatsoever.
Voluntarily limiting one's bodily exposure in public or in private doesn't limit one's capabilities and acumen.
The fact that she successfully managed to introduce several progressive reforms while observing absolute pardah speaks for itself.
It's a pity that you can't think beyond your prejudices. It is this which is regressive and not what you mentioned.

@@thelolperson7249 it's not a random clothing style that someone wears. It's the very cloth, custom that has been a symbol of suppression for generations of women. I understand she was a woman of her time. My problem is with today's women who "choose" to wear that. It's like rubbing it on others' face. People should be able to make their own choices. But there sure are some wrong choices.
