  • Metoprolol (& Beta Blockers) Side Effects (& Why They Occur)
Metoprolol is a beta blocker used to treat hypertension, anginal chest pain, congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction. It, like other beta blockers, acts to inhibit or “block” the binding of catecholamines (like epinephrine and norepinephrine) to the beta 1 receptor in the heart, reducing heart rate and reducing renin release to ultimately reduce blood pressure. However, due to this mechanism, beta blockers can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

I slept almost all day and then almost all night. Chest and body felt like a heavy elephant was sitting on top of me. Zero energy. Very heavy, thumpy heartbeats. I had horrible, realistic, constant nightmares. Brain fog. It all stopped when I stopped taking it. And I was only on 10mg! Cardiologist said I had a severe reaction to it, took me off. He listened to me, and I'm lucky. I feel so much better without it. Trust what your body is telling you, folks. ❤

Wake up docs, ask a druggist they’ll tell you about it freely! I had two pharmacists tell me it was a well known reaction to Metoporal.

prescribed this to me. By 5he 2nd day, I could barely get out of bed, dizzy, felt like aomething was sitting on my chest. No strenght, stopped taking it and told the clinic, to get me an appointment with a cardiologist. He ran labs, echo, etc. Prescribed Coreg. What a difference. Been taking it for some time. What a difference. Read and heard so many bad things about Metoprolol

  • @Fiawordweaver

Post craniotomy I couldn’t tolerate metoprolol. For some reason before surgery a doc put me on a different heart medication i can’t recall. 70 here. So when a new doc was treating me she said that metoprolol was a better medication for my blood pressure and prescribed it. I had severe diarrhea ( these types of discomfort always appear in the wee hours of the morning when you desperately want to sleep). I went to my doc and told her to take me off this med. She reluctantly did. She said diarrhea is not one of the common side effects and I was her first patient to have this reaction. To prove she was right, she asked me to try it again to see if I got the same results. I said, no thank you, and walked out. I then am assigned to a cheeky cardiologist. She never heard anyone presenting with diarrhea from metoprolol and wanted me to try 10 mg. Very convincing specialist. I tried and I presented with diarrhea again but not as horrendous as the all nighter experience. Frickin docs think they know it all. I just wished I had used a party hat in the commode and brought her a fresh sample in a 16oz glass jar with lid.

My husband was on this for several months. He was also on Candesarten 4 mg, blood thinners and a statin for Cholesterol, he had awful side effects to all of them. So he was also taking Hawthorn. So we increased the Hawthorn to 1600 mg a day, introduced Nattokinase 2 capsules a day. He stopped all of the drugs except Candesarten 4 mg. he also takes serrapeptase. He no longer has any of those side effects except a runny nose from the Candesarten. his BP is in the 120/60 and lower. He now exercises on a stationary bike to get some strength back. He was also getting Atrial Fib regularly but hasnt had it now for four years.

I was on metoprolol for three years and it managed my BP well. After the SVT w/PVCs they doubled my dose to 50 mg. Extended Release. Both my BP and the heart issues are much, much better. However, the side effects I experienced were crazy! My fingernails began splitting and flaking, and some crazy insomnia! I have MS so my fatigue is from the MS and the metoprolol combined.

I was put on it after a type b aortic dissection. I woke up every morning with a 115 heart rate. Normal for me is about 70. I had horrible GI issues and lost 25 pounds in 2 months. I saw a GI doctor, took tests and nothing was found. Doctors kept telling me it was not this med and to keep taking it. I finally had enough and quit taking it. I was better in a week and no longer take any beta blockers.

Ppl are saying all these symptoms but let’s start with health. Are ppl actives like working out? Changing up their diet? Stop smoking? Stop alcohol? Stopping their stress? This medication is purposely designed to temporarily help lower BP and to get ppl better by helping them changing up their lifestyle. But if ppl continue to indulge process food, junk food they are not helping themselves. I’m on this med to lower my BP and going back to a healthier lifestyle of eliminating all these things that causing me health problems and not having to rely on drugs. Try tracking how much calories you’re eating. Try taking your daily supplement support. Sitting at home not being active being obese will not help at all. Burn your carbohydrate, go on intermittent fasting, eat healthier, reduce salt, reduce sugar. Go work out! Because no one here is stating how much they weigh What they eat daily how much they drinking and smoking be smart about your health if you don’t care then don’t complain what this med is doing to you

My heat rate use to race everyday and sometimes several times a day. Metoprolol would always bring it back to its it's normal rhythm. After I took my 2nd covid vaccine my heart went into uncontrollable rhythm for almost a day. After that it went back to it's normal rhythm. My heart never again raced into the old usual almost 200 bpm for the past 2.5 year's. And since then I haven't needed metoprolol.

I personally found that b complex and Co Q 10 helped a lot with my feet and hands. Each medication can help you in some way; but, it takes something out of the body or stops the absorption of something that the body needs to be healthy. hate it. It brings on headaches, and fainting spells. Can not drive if I take this due to dizziness not to mention falling asleep at the drop of a hat.

I took myself off of it. Side effects were terrible. The doctor would not believe me. That taking two morning and two night. Changed the heart doctor and they wanted me on three in the morning and three at night. Not caring about how bad my side effects were. Now I'm walking up and down stairs.,breathing better, not choking on phlegm,. I can sleep without night terrors
