Beginning of the year board game cull! | Decluttering my board game collection

- Hey friends! It's the beginning of the year and to start off the year right I thought it would be a good time to thin out the collection a bit. Get rid of some games I don't think will be getting to the table any time soon. Hope you all enjoy!

Hey friends! Apologies for the slightly darker lighting and weird things going on with the camera. My camera was not my friend this day. LOL. Hope you all enjoy the video regardless! Thanks for watching! 😊🌿
No worries it’s good, I just started making my own and man it’s hard! Thanks.
I almost had a heart attack when you said you were going to cull Everdell! This one is so beautiful it will never leave my collection. I agree that it takes way too long though...
I love your strategy of storing your games at other people’s houses by “gifting” them. Brilliant!!!!
😂 yeup! I don’t have to own it and have it in my house to play it!
43:14 yes!!!! 🎉 finally someone gets it. Art is nice, but the gameplay is more important! Maybe just take pictures of the game and components. So if you ever want to remember the game, you can just look at components. I love culling videos.
Glad you’re starting to feel better too! Catan cull doesn’t count cause you still have it which makes me happy!
We're fast approaching the point where we'll have to cull some games from our collection (which is somewhere around 300) to make some space for new games to come in, but I know it's going to be rough, and I'm not quite there yet emotionally. I practically hyperventilate just watching videos of other people culling games. 😅
Good video, Jenna. Culling can be hard and emotionally difficult, but it always feels good to declutter. Most of my culls get donated to our local library so all sorts of people get to enjoy board games/ board gaming!
I love a great culling video!!! So fun to watch 🤗
"My boardgames makes me feel overwhelmed" said no board game collector.
Cull videos always feel like some sort of therapy lol
Fun video! That’s a good start. I have a hard time getting rid of mine, and I’m making slow but steady progess
Great video. Watching you cull reminds me I must go through my collection soon. With any amount of games that get passed on to others, it helps to free up space and feels a bit less cluttered. Great job, and remember, it is a process. Cheers from Canada
Sleeping gods let me down too! I saw your stream after I already culled mine. It felts like a chore to me and my boyfriend. I dont regret culling it. 😊
See you soon at LevelUp !
Watched this culling video and of course it inspired us to …add more games to our collection instead of subtract.
Way to go us😂
Just checked, there is there is a solo mode on BGG for Vivid Memories. ❤
I am starting my solo journey through all the Sleeping Gods games this month. Starting with Primeval Peril, then the OG, than Distant Skies. I have a feeling I will get some plays in them, enjoy some Laukat goodness, then cull them.
Nice Adam! I hope you enjoy your adventures! Sounds like a ton of fun! 😊
Mega evolution. It seems most reviewers go through this process. My hope, since following you from the beginning, is that games don’t end up being too much of a chore. Culling is always a great filter to keep your collection focused. Games that stay in your collection that mirror your preferences and passion is always going to keep us tuned in. Curious why Francis has quit playing? That is somewhat discouraging. I hope he also returns. I appreciated his choices in games. Great vid.
I'm keeping my collection under 50, all killers no fillers, already is stressful to manage. Can't even imagine having as many as you, i'll die 😂
That’s tight, I’ve limited myself to 100 🫣
My guess on the small box project-merging them all into one box a la the Gamegenic Cards Lair or Dungeon? I’ve thought about that with some of my own card games. Use dividers to separate games/decks, and the Lairs have drawers for tokens (just maybe not enough which is one reason I’ve not done it yet)
We also culled Catan this month and Betrayal at the House on the Hill
You know looking back I regret my kallax shelfs they just don't hold that many games and are not great for variable sizes. Look pretty but if you are just trying to store them space to store amount ratio is not great compared to my regular shelfs I had on reg book shelfs.
I am very sorry to hear that Francis does not enjoy playing games right now, Its hard to thoroughly enjoy the hobby when your partner doesn't love it as much as you.
I know the feeling
Its a struggle
Yeah it’s been hard but I am so thankful that I have found some amazing friends that love board games just as much as me. Never want Francis to feel pressured and hoping that love for games will come back. ❤
My wife doesn’t like games as much as me, and you know what? That’s FINE. No love lost haha
I would just advise to try 7 wonders duel with the solo variant - it is so good! It is my most played solo game.
There is also an app you can use instead of printing the cards which is also handy.
Ohhh I didn't realize that there was an app! Thank you so much for letting me know! 😊 That was the main thing holding me back. I just haven't had time to print and cut the cards!
I didn’t enjoy meadow as much as I expected too.
Try Primevil Peril and Distant Skies. You can always borrow our copy.
Good culling. Sad to see Taverns of Tiefenthal go but I also get it. I really like that game but I have no one to play it with either so I have never picked it up. I get to play it at conventions though and always have a blast.
Thanks! I am to but like I said my friend Donna has it and so does our friends Tom & Asha so if I ever want to play it I have a few copies I can play for sure. That gives me comfort knowing that. 😊👍🏻
I have that problem too. Love the game but it’s not getting to the table. When it does, it’s always a teaching game so I don’t put in the modules which I’ve only been able to play like once. All that said, I did finally get the Open Doors exp for Christmas and ordered the Folded Space insert so I can store it all together so I’m still hopeful! 😂
This year for the first time I had to get rid of some games just because I've no more space in the room, but I would never get rid of Meadow XD. I didn't buy the expansion because it seems to me it didn't thematically merge with the core game, a game where the theme is so central (and i don't think you can walk through mountais and be in a river canoe at the same time), but the core game give me really big sensations when I play it.
I have noticed that your taste in games have changed since you first made this channel. I think we all go through this I know I have shifted my tastes several times already 😆
My guess for the small boxes is to transfer them to photo boxes that come in a carrying case. In fact, I've seen a BGG user create a whole bunch of covers for those photo boxes, so maybe you'll be printing those off too? Regardless, I look forward to that video, as I have many small box games so maybe you will inspire a better storage solution!
😏😏😏
I’m at the point where if it’s just an OK game i get rid of it. Some recent just OK games that were axed: lost ruins of arnak with expansion, la granja, air land and sea, scythe. However there are a few are nostalgic.
Sleeping gods getting culled. Not surprising. Most kickstarters are not good enough.
For the small box games, are you going to move them to one of those 4x6 photo box organizers?
Haven’t gotten to the end yet but don’t feel too bad if you can’t cull much. It seems you just went through this, what, right before Pax?
Some surprises on the unplayed shelve: Azul Queens garden (the best azul), Furnace, MyCity, MyIsland, Ecos.
A collection without Taverns of Tiefenthal? 😥You can't call it a collection ... 😉🙂
I know right! I'm excited to play Azul Queen's Garden, My City, My Island and Ecos! I have already played Furnace and it was great! It was a friends copy so that is why I still had my copy on the shelf. I did take it off the shelf eventually and the expansion is the only thing on there now. Excited to try that as it introduces a solo mode! I'll miss Taverns but like I said, I have a few friends that have copies so I can always play theirs. 😊
Culling is a difficult thing to do. I wonder if a shift in perspective/psychology might help. Culling something feels bad/negative. Maybe instead of going through your shelves & trying to choose what to cull, pull the games off the shelves. Decide how many shelves you want to fill to & choose what to keep instead. Choosing what to keep instead of what to cull might feel better.
Start with your favorites and work from there, then allow maybe one more shelf or half shelf for last minute panic cheats. Then the rest of the games by this time may feel labeled as "left over" and easier to let go of in your mind. You already had, say 200 chances to choose them (if that's the limit you picked) but there were other games you picked instead cause you liked them or would play them more. It's best not to use the simple liking of a game as a measuring stick. Many of us board gamers have voracious appetites and will like many more games than we have room or time for. What you want to keep are the ones you like best, and the new ones you are most eager/likely to get played.
You need to play Moon. So good. Also my wife will play 2 player games with you.
Not that I have watched the video yet...but you mentioned all the small box games. I think the only thing to do with small box games is ditch the boxes. Put them in the photo containers or if they fit into hard desk cases and then put those in either thin drawer dresser or a DVD bookcase.
😏😏😏
I loooove the art of Parks and Flamecraft but they weren’t really my style of game so I compromised with the art books.
I’m having fun with legacy of Yu! I think you will enjoy 😄
I’ve played it a few times now and love it!!! ❤
Culling is hard when you have kids - I was ready to resell my copy of Flick Em Up: Dead of Winter cause it’s just a little too fiddly and slow for what should be a fast and frantic dexterity game. But my kids have sort of taken over ownership cause it’s the fun game with all the zombies and guns lol.
I really like the ladder shelf. Do you have a link for it?
IMO Obscurio is a better version of Mysterium which if you’re keeping you need to try it before it goes.
Of course they would gift a 3D version to convince you to cull Catan haha 😆
HAHA! I know right! Love it! 😂👏🏻💕
The Goblin Vaults solo game is pretty fun. Also, I agree that Nanga Parbat is pretty good, though I may get rid of it and just play it on BGA. After watching your video, I can see there are at least another 5-10 you could get rid of based on what you said about them. (It's always easier to cull someone else's collection, isn't it? 😂) I can completely understand Francis's feeling...Starting last year, I pulled way back on backing campaigns and buying games. A bunch of old kickstarters came in toward the end of last year and I've been good at getting some of them played right away (Fliptown, Terraforming Mars: The Dice Game). while I also have a stack of fun new games that I have yet to get to (Septima, Witchcraft!, Nightmare Cathedral, Unconscious Mind...when it arrives). The thing that was hard for me about always getting new games was not having time to play the games that I already know I love! Anyway, good luck with everything and hope you feel better soon!
Yeup that is exactly what he has expressed to me and it is totally understandable! This hobby is amazing but sometimes the pressure to play all the new can get overwhelming. We are actually getting together with friends this weekend and we are planning to play a lot of our tried and true games like Concordia, Underwater Cities and Caverna. I’m really excited. 🥰
@@TheBoardGameGarden Have fun! 🎲
8:56 He doesnt want to play games with you anymore?! Question should be, do I keep him? Not, do I keep the game? 🤣 I kid. Hope you are feeling better! ❤
HAHA! 😂👏🏻 Hilarious! He will still play games with me sometimes don't worry! It's just hard to keep up with the amount I play being a content creator. His board game stamina is quite a bit lower than mine for sure. 😂
Lol the easiest cull ever 😅
@TheBoardGameGarden I totally understand. My finacé will put up with my game addiction, but trying to learn new games each month pushes him over the edge. Too bad I'm not closer, I'd come play all the 2P games!
My wife gives me about a one-game-per-month limit too. She hates learning new games
@@skitch76cd I’m so thankful that me and my SO started playing board games together. She’s my main playing partner and loves heavy games as well. If we ever separate I don’t know how I’d play board games. Is there a board game dating app ? Lol
I think I got meadow because of what you said about it in earlier videos???
Why won’t he play games with you anymore?!?! How sad 😢
He will still play games with me sometimes don't worry! 😊 He actually attended PAX with me this year and played a ton! He just has a hard time keeping up with the amount that I play being a content creator. It's a lot and can be super overwhelming so I don't blame him!
Do you have any solo game recs for newbies?
Ps. Cute pup.
You are going to hang all the small box games on the wall and create a mosaic of your dog.
Hello! Do you still have isle of cats?
So sorry Francis isn’t enjoying games.. this is a first heard for me!! :(
Mine is 300 also trying to bring it down to 250. I managed to get rid of 10 so far lol
That's a great start! 😊👏🏻
Wait Frances doesn’t like board games anymore? If my SO stopped playing my plays would go soooo low. Did he ever like board games or was he doing it more for you? I gotta say it’s great having an SO that also plays and enjoys board games. Hopefully he comes around again.
He does still enjoy board games don't worry! 😊 He will play with me every once in a while. I think I just started getting too many board games too quickly and it overwhelmed him. He says he is just burnt out of new games right now. I play so many new games as a content creator and I totally get that that can be overwhelming so I don't blame him! It's a lot! I never want to pressure him into it if he doesn't want to. That's why I am thankful I have met so many amazing board game friends in the last year or so. 😊
What are you doing with the games you are no longer keeping?
What's the furniture with the TV on it? Also, if you don't like co-op games, why keep Horrified?
It's a 2x4 Kallax with the added legs and doors! I love the way it looks! 😊 Also I will play co-op games! I don't hate them. It's just I prefer playing competitive. That's why I still keep Horrified and a ton of other co-op games.
always been curious, how do you, or anyone, "move games along"? I have a full time job and family etc... and I don't really have time to take on another part time job of running a mail order business, so to speak, to sell games I'd like to be rid of, and find buyers, get things packaged up and sent etc.... but, maybe there's no other way...
I usually give the games to family or friends if they want them or I sell them on Facebook Marketplace locally! It's super easy as you don't have to ship anything. The buyer will typically just pick it up from your house. 😊👍🏻
I've sold games to a company in Wisconsin (US) called Noble Knight games. They don't give the best prices but the do send you a label that pays for the shipping costs. You just box them up and send them off. It's a great way to get rid of some games in one go.
I personally just donate them to thrift shops or give them to friends & family.
Selling becomes too complicated. It’s easier to just give.
The Catan Cull Saga continues lol
😂😂😂
Just curious... What is the before and after count? Probably easier for you to go downstairs and count than for one of us to do it lol.
Do you mean how many in the collection now? Or how many did I end up culling? Let me know and I will go count! 😊
@@TheBoardGameGardenBoth!
Hey Jenna since you have culled Catan could I get you and Francis to autograph it and I will buy it from you?
Why is Francis not going to play games with you anymore?
Sounds like Final Girl is moving in?
Not sure if that is suppose to say "moving in" or "moving on" but I have all my Final Girl still! It was just in the pile of stuff on the floor. That is all staying for sure!
@@TheBoardGameGarden I meant moving on. Good! Scared me a bit there!
Where are de Luciani's games? No Tzolkin, no Lorenzo, no Barrage. You only have Darwin's Journey?
You really need to bite the bullet and get rid of all your 2 player only games!!! My unsolicites opinion lol
Francis doesn't want to play board games with u anymore....😮🤯whaaaaat?!?!?!!🤔🤨🤨☹🤬🤬🤬
Hawt
You love board games whaddaya gonna do? Eh!
Why doesn't he want to play games anymore?
Cull Flamecraft. Was my biggest dissapointment ever. Such a beautiful game but also such a boring resources trading game.
Oh interesting. You’re the first person I’ve heard say that. Seems a lot of others love it. I watched a playthrough and it didn’t do much for me, but would still give it a try to see what the hype was about
@@skitch76cd I played it a few times with different people (heavy gamers and also people that dont play much) and all loved the artwork and humor but then thought the gameplay is kind of irrelevant.
U go to a place, get ressources and then trade them into victory points. thats it.
The powers of the dragons are also not very interesting (also some are more powerful than others). After one game we had a ton of ideas for the powers of the dragons that would be simple, but interesting. Really wasted potential.
I would always play My Lil Everdell over Flamecraft. Yeah u also collect ressources, but there are more different strategies which cards to collect (that give you powers or bonus).
Here in Germany Flamecraft is now for 25/30 € at the shelfes. It was 50 € back when it was released.
I wish I could love it so much like some people do, cause the art is outstanding, but the game is really not that great.
But sure, give it a try by yourself
Agree, very boring
Noooo keep all your games. Each has its own story and connections
Kind of a dick move for you partner to not want to participate in your interests especially one that is so prevalent in your life and one that is built around human relationships and socialisation.
He will still play games with me lol don't worry! He just can't keep up with the amount that I play as a content creator and I don't blame him! It's a lot. That is why I have found multiple amazing board game friend groups. 😊👍🏻
I disagree. If it’s your hobby that’ great. Don’t impose it on your partner unless they also genuinely like it.
Gosh, that’s kinda harsh. I loved the video where Francis went to that huge board game store and I know he just went to a convention as well. Seems pretty supportive to me
Your partner is not obligated to enjoy the same things you do. It is completely acceptable and healthy to have separate interests. There is a big difference between being supportive and forcing someone to enjoy or participate in something they don’t have the same amount of interest in as you do.
