It rains on Ethiopian highland and cotton grows on Egyptian deserts. It rains in Ethiopia and the lights turn on in Egypt. Ethiopia's rain have been magical for Egypt. Time to make that magic work for Ethiopia.

There is a failure of African leaders up and down the Nile river and its watershed to engage in diplomacy to agree to a viable water management plan. Ethiopia refuses to engage in diplomacy and acts unilaterally. Egypt responds in kind.
I would encourage sensible Kenyans and Africans to think more about the long term ramifications of this way of operating on the Nile River. It is a path towards increased conflict and, yes, potential famines.
Diplomacy, international collaboration and planning is the only way forward on this issue. Africa needs a great deal more of it, in general.
How much longer do Africans want to stay in this postcolonial period of political dysfunction and infighting? The world is growing impatient with it. China will exploit that.

    • @ሕያው
      @ሕያው 3 года назад

@@ems7623 oh and i am assuming you think african politics are in a vacuum or the only foreign influencer is china? USA and west in general loves the narrative that china is exploiting africa while they overthrow or bully regimes that don't favor their corporate interests. The world may be getting tired of it but the elites encourage the chaos (directly and indirectly) while they reap the benefits of africas' natural resources. All while they perpetuate how they are helping the poor africans by giving foreign aid to regimes that do their bidding which end up being mostly pocketed.

Wrong knowledge Bro ... Nile is not internal river inside Ethiopia to control it ..but it's an international river as many international rivers in Europe and other continents that no country can control neither prohibit to the common countries.. Ethiopia recailms that it needs the Nile water for irrigation despite it has 9 times the amount of Nile water from other resources while Egypt got no other water resources .. Ethiopia is an imprialist and racist country against its all African neighbours and mistreat the borders rules taking advantages of african neighbours forces weakness but now Ethiopia collides with Egypt which is so powerful... if Ethiopia is really serious in developement issues, it would focus on other resources rather than storing the amount of water on the borders of sudan to destroy Sudan and Egypt with 75 billion cubic meters of water in case of the dam gates are opened ...poor Sudan poor Egypt

hi just wanted to say that Egyptian people support the development and growth of our home continent Africa and more specifically our neighbours, Sudan and Ethiopia. one must, however, note that Egypt is 97% dessert not nearly as fertile as Ethiopia which is why the Nile is literally the source of life and can not be treated as another natural resource such as gold or diamonds.
I hope Ethiopian citizens understand the fear Egyptian citizens feel every day, tomorrow morning we may wake up with no water. yet it seems the trending hashtags aim for the death of Egypt and are requesting no compromises which in retrospect will kill us, this is the ONLY reason we are asking for a longer filling period
I'm just replying as while i have no right to tell anyone what to do i believe nobody has the right to take the lifeline of millions :)

Asmaa El Baz Now you are pleading for a change, most of the rhetoric we heard from your citizens and government to date was bullying, threats and lies as well as deception. Why did you not try to work with us in collaboration since you claim that the Nile is your only lifeline and it should be reserved for your use exclusively? It’s been over nine years since the building of the dam began, it is none of our business but instead of building a whole new city to compete with Dubai which will need additional water, electricity etc. couldn’t you have spent your money and your meager resources on digging for undergrowth water stored beneath you in your own territory? You have invested in all kinds of modern weaponry to intimidate your neighbors into cowering to your wishes, why don’t you ask your governments to divert funds to secure your water supply instead of intimidating your neighbors? You keep saying your lifeline is the Nile, hydropower recycles water and sends it out again, we waited since 1965 to build this dam while you’ve been undermining us, weren’t we patient enough? How much longer did we have to wait to satisfy Egypt? For ever is what I think as you are too used to free water and had no intention of looking for ways to supplement your sources. You are even bold enough and comfortable enough to sell it to third countries while you stop us from getting a liter. Enough is enough, we have lost our patience, there is no way back, tell your government to stop selling water to 3rd countries, stop building a brand new city to compete with Dubai(that have ample resources) and to dig the aquifer under your sand to supply you with fresh water that is a priority for your people. No more patience, we will fill our dam when we want to, how much we want to and that is that!!

That is not so much of an issue in Ethiopia. Egypt needs to stop the false narrative it is spreading about how the filling of the dam will impact its way of life. It will not. The untold side of the story:
Regardless of wither this dam is a matter of economic survival for Ethiopians or not, geopolitical mistrust means it is a question of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' for Ethiopia..meaning, even if Ethiopia (the source of 86%) of the Nile promises never to touch the river and instead decides to develop using other means, Egyptians have throughout history followed a shroud policy of keeping Ethiopia in constant turmoil and worked hard by actively supporting all sorts of destructive forces against Ethiopia, as well as blocking international development funds..Egyptian "strategists" as well as some leaders have been on recored saying "a developed Ethiopia is a threat to Egypt", and every Ethiopian knows this with a strong resentment towards Egypt..hence it makes sense for Ethiiopua to dam it or be damned forever..at least by having some level of "share" Ethiopia can place itself in a position to defend itself from Egyptian mischief..
Just reading some of the Egyptian comments here alone is a clear evidence of how Egyptians believe water flows uphill rather than downhill. The distorted sense of entitlement means something they should negotiate for has become some thing they want to obsessively dictate..for example demanding assurance in case of drought or asking Ethiopia release stored water from GERD is like saying the mega Dam buit by poor Ethiopians is my personal reservoir...bare in mind Egypt contributed not even a single penny towards the Dam, instead it did everything it can to destruct the Dam as well as the country..
Having said that there is no shortage of technical solution for sharing the river Nile without affecting one-another's interest but politics gets the better of everything....water wasted to evaporation in Aswan and the billions of cubic m3 unused water that passes through Egypt and ends up in Mediterranean alone is enough to fill hundreds of mega-dams upstream....but I guise Egyptians would rather die than see Ethiopians come out of darkness...

Now it's 21th century. Ethiopia and the other Nile riparian states have rightly demanded to decide on the future of river and its water usage. Particularly, Ethiopia, as the source of 85 percent of the nile river water, has its God-giveb right to utilize water in her own territory as she sees fit without causing damage to the lower riparian states like Sudan and Egypt.

The most important forms of production worldwide will be wind and solar, but for some countries, like Egypt and Ethiopia, hydro power will also be important, at least for quite a while. Geothermal energy will grow too, but it will also vary greatly by country.
Every country should consider carefully, whether investing in energy production by coal or natural gas makes sense anymore. I believe that in the future there will be more international taxes and other costs added to goods produced by using energy sources that add greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Emission trading is one form of that practice already. Investing now into such production may prove to be a bad investment. Anyway, wind and solar are going to be so cheap in the near future, that number of countries adding fossil fuel based energy production will get smaller every year only for that reason. Africa indeed has great solar resources, and also wind resources are very good in many places. Both production forms seem to be built on the continent already in pretty big numbers. I’m confident that that trend will continue.

This isn't a complicated issue. Egypt is particularly dependent on the Nile - as it has been since antiquity for both drinking water and agriculture. Any damming upstream is a potential existential threat. Climate change and desertification increases the potential threat. This would make any reasonable person downstream nervous.
Ethiopia should have pursued a multilateral agreement with Egypt and Sudan years ago regarding water supply management on the Blue Nile and downstream. It is a simple matter of international coalition building with partner countries in your own geographical region. There has been, however, a major deficit in diplomacy amongst African leaders for many decades now.
I really don't understand why so many people who live far from the banks of the Nile are so quick to take sides in this. Not helpful - at all.

Egypt is now trying to play the negotiation game after decades of UNILATERLY stopping Ethiopia from building the dam either through protesting of outside investments or even bombing construction equipment enroute to ethiopia in 1976. Now after they have self funded the dam they are trying to act like the reasonable ones. Ethiopia wants to negotiate but wants to throw out colonial treaties that Egypt keeps citing and insist are valid (even though Ethiopia was never apart of it). It's very clear that Egypt wants to keep the status quo of the nile and this is far from existential threat. Do you know the largest aquifer in the world is under Egypt (Nubian Sandstone aquifer)? It has hundreds of years of the nile output (but you never hear anyone mention it) and besides that Egypt has access to the sea to desalinate. Maybe you should do your own research instead of parroting what you hear from MSM which skews the narrative for corporate interest. Media always portrays the poor egyptian farmer that can't tend his land but water is already disproportionally distributed to elites and corporations to export products like cotton. Here is a thought, maybe if you are in the middle of the desert don't export water-intensive crops. Egypt with a population of 100+ million while living on less than 5% of the land is already unsustainable. The egyptians government's solution to this is to use more nile water to make the desert more arable. Why does egypt get to grow at the expense of the other countries? Anyway the filling schedule is already agreed upon but egypt wants ethiopia to release water from its dam during a drought to compensate for the lower levels. Why does ethiopia need to do that when egypt has its own dam which has more than 2x the water the GERD could store and the artificial lake nasser?

Just look at how little water is used by Israel to produce vast amounts of food. Water shortages are inevitable as there are too many people for the water in North Africa. Egypt has a population bigger than Germany and they rely on one river. Not good.

@Yara Zy just because the nile flows into egypt from ethiopia doesn't necessarily mean you own. Read and learn the facts before you scribble anything. Ethiopia owns the nile naturally. The Brits fooled you by promising you your share but you have been played. The Brits are not on your side now as they were during the colonial times. Wake up bro and stop dreaming and accept peacefully your share of the nile among your neighbors

Egypt have one dam and sudan have many other dams but all of them doesn't block water form passing through is path.
Ethiopia also have many dams but this dam specifically is made to block near 100Billion meter of water that will starve our nation
on another hand Between the years 2000 and 2009 more than 200 notable dam failures happened worldwide, and ethiopia Built the dam just on its border with sudan, so if it fall it will be A Disaster to sudan and Egypt with no effect for ethiopia.
