      @ComplicatedKnots I never knew if it could be done was too much of a scaredy cat to give it a go but I have a collection of sewing patterns to turn into crochet and knitted ones now! I'm super excited to try out a vintage Winnie-the-Pooh one I have 😄

    The part about plushie making is my dislike of sewing, I can't imagine giving myself MORE sewing to do! That being said, this is a GOREGEOUS piece, it came out really good. Thank you for bearing the burden of this task so the rest of us don't have to o7

    • @ComplicatedKnots
      @ComplicatedKnots  5 месяцев назад +20

      I mean, technically we could crochet around the outside of the pieces to join them together, I was just taking a shortcut by sewing :)

    • @InfinityWayvern
      @InfinityWayvern 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@ComplicatedKnots True, depending on how you want to play the sewing-to-crochet game. I was imagining you just make your "fabric" out of crochet.
      That being said, bless you, take all the shortcuts you need you were already a plucked chicken by the time you got to the sewing part!

      Such a good idea. So many crochet clothes patterns are dull beyond the telling. Definitely worth a try. I have some yarn I have been struggling to find a pattern for that this might be the answer…..

      That’s what I thought too. Though I am glad she chose a plushie as those are often more difficult imo (depending on what you’re sewing specifically). I may have to use this technique to make my own clothes though as it seems a lot more accessible to me than just cutting and sewing fabric ironically

    The vibes of assigning one material texture to another material shape are super Yoshi's Wooly World/Little Big Planet! Sewing seams like this on crochet feel innately wonky, charming, toylike: playfully illogical. I adore it.

    Always such a relief hearing far more experienced crocheters saying it's hard to tell the right and wrong sides apart! I swear, sometimes it feels like some sort of conspiracy or prank when a pattern refers to the right and wrong sides, especially when there are pictures of what, to my eyes, look absolutely identical! Thankfully, i figure if I can't tell as a crocheter, the average person probably can't tell, either, lol!
    This turned out SO stinkin' cute, and I do hope you try with a wearable, because this is such a fun idea and so interesting to see how things translate!

    This was a lot of fun!
    I'd love to see a wearable, I've thought about trying it myself a few times. I don't think it'll be dissimilar to sewing with a chunky knit fabric but will probably work best with a simple, looser, pattern without much shaping or it'll get bulky at the seams/darts etc. Larger pieces are always easier to sew together so I'm sure it'll be easier than the tiny adorable T-rex.

    OMG! SUPER ADORABLE!!!!
    Only thoughts I had while you where working thru this is as follows:
    1. You should follow nap lines to determine the direction of your stitches. If you look at the arms vs head the stitches will be different (like I think I also.saw on the body) as you followed two different directions.
    2. Yes.... you should include the seam allowance to allow for a smoother join.
    Otherwise FANTASTIC JOB!

    I LOVE THIS! Also, I wonder if you went around the outside edge in single crochet before assembly if that would neaten it off? And yes now I have a very strong urge to make this out of felt. I also wonder have you looked at knit amigurumi patterns? They are often flat and have lots of sewing witchcraft involved and I think it would be interesting to see one of those in crochet. Again I absolutely love how this came out- especially the contrast yarn you used to stitch up with.

    In german there is a saying about the longer thread debate that always made me seeth with rage whenever i was told it growing up and learning to craft/sew in schools or at home
    "Langes fädchen, faules mädchen" ugh just typing it! It means "long thread (cute form), lazy girl"

    This turned out super cute! As someone who sews I've often wondered the opposite: If you could sew a crochet pattern. With that I've concluded that the only way to do it is to use a photo of the finished pieces as reference to design sewn pieces based off of.
    It would be cool to see a sequel like that: Where you try to make something like this again but recreating the shapes with your normal crochet techniques.

    instead of sl-st, you can force your hands to do opposite hand crocheting like knitting, but on a flat plane, so it's like a right handed patern faces to the right, left faces to the left. so reapeat between the two and you got crochet version of a purl when doing this! let me know if you'd like me to explain better!

    Doing a sewn piece you could probably get away with doing the mosaic crochet method of cutting the yarn at the end of each row and obv using the same colour next row instead of the next. Yeah you'd have a ton of ends but you could easily sow and tuck them in so you'd not have to deal with them.
    Just food for thought

  • @TapperPlushMom

    I haven't even fully started this video, and I'll just say that it IS possible to take yarn and craft it into the shape of pattern pieces - I've done it with Knit and essentially copying over a sketch of a plushie, and that turned out...relatively well (probably would have been better if I'd drawn the entire front view of the creature at the same time, as it is the head doesn't quite look proportionate).
    (Finished video) Yup, about how I thought it'd go. It IS a good idea to know where you're going, and if you're still a little less than confident that you know what you're doing with a 3D yarn-shaping direction (like, I'm always somewhat nervous whenever I'm trying to knit or crochet a shape that's 3D from the get-go), you might want to just start from drawing your shapes on paper and then working your pieces flat first. Probably if you were to attempt to do this method again, you'd probably make the shape inside the dotted line, and then do, like, one row of single crochet around the outside of the piece for seam allowance, skipping stitches to allow for the notches.

  • @kimmygt5938
    @kimmygt5938 5 месяцев назад

    Yes you can. I've explained the basic process many times. It's similar to converting knit patterns from a schematic. It's how my Grams taught me to crochet. You crochet to the shape and to measure. I wouldn't have started on the side. Start from the center and shape out. I use simple patterns to create things. It's a lot easier to do with panels and clothes. With the head because you want stretch you'd add more of the seam allowance, knit you wouldn't need to.
    I prefer using sewing concepts for making crochet. If you aren't familiar with clothing construction, the patterns don't end up with tapers or proper fitting. It drives me nuts.

    You know you could always work every other row backwards, like a herringbone stitch. It's hard at first but u get the hang of it fairly quickly.

    currently i'm trying to crochet a sewing pattern for a pouch and oh boy i'm beyond struggling even though i picked an easy rectangular shape pattern, i'm honestly in awe of your ambition here.

    I'd love to see you try this with a garment! Larger pieces would be more forgiving, I think. Great video!

    Little tip if you want to do this again in the future, while you’re doing the freeform crochet parts, put a stitch marker anywhere you see a dart. That way you can still match everything up the way you would with the darts, but it’s removable for sewing!

    This reminded me so much of the T Rex toy from Cocomelon. The toy is knitted up but in pieces like this. It was clearly not designed by an amigurumi maker! This turned out so cute though!

    You look great in this video!! Idk if you maybe lost some weight or picked up a new skin care routine or something, but you are glowing!!

    I'm glad you attempted this and the end result was really cute! I think the next step would be to attempt to create this sewing pattern as an amigurumi. So you'd use traditional amigurumi methods to try and recreate the design. You could compare the final results then. I hope that makes any sense 😂🙈 but it would be interesting to see

    You did an awesome job! I’ve also wondered about using crochet for sewing pattern pieces. Now I might give it a go.

    I was hoping this was going to be about clothes! My body does best in clothes with princess seams, darts, etc. and there aren’t many crochet patterns with those sorts of features. I have some sewing patterns that I think would be cute in crochet… I just need to bite the bullet and give it a try.

    I made this pattern a few years ago sewing a few dinos by machine, and I can say you definitely aren't the only one who had issues with the teeth! I end up trying a few different methods to get the teeth to sit in place properly and end up using a similar method as you but of course with double layered fabric. I also found that like you top stitching made the teeth sit nicer and helped to secure them in place. I do remember having to go in by hand to manipule the ends of the strip and tack it inside with hand stitching aswell.
    Hope this helps anyone who is wanting to try this pattern!

    That was really cool! I love it! It seems like something really fun to do, but stressful at times 😅. You're so awesome. I hope to be that good one day!

    I can actually see a reason for crocheting the piece and then sewing it! At least for me after cutting the fabric for sewing the fibers irrate my nose really bad (i think it may be related to a dust allergy not sure). If you dont have to cut fabric and get lose fiber everywhere it may be better on peoples allergies and an alternate way people could sew. Not sure if irratation is common with people but if people have that issue this may be an alternative!

    I’m had a very similar idea nagging me, so I’m working on designing a knitted version of a specific top design! Interesting to see this and the comments of other people with a similar line of thought!

    This is absolute Insanity as far as efficiency of time use is concerned. I have to say he is super adorable like those vintage toys from the 40s and 50s. I think the contrasting green stitch on the head really enhances the aesthetic and it's super cute.

    I would also be interested in seeing this with clothing patterns- I've been trying to figure that out for a cosplay project.
