My all time favourite quote and always a good reminder is from a childrens book called Momo. There is a character called Beppo the street sweeper and he is quite old already. He explains how it can be very overwhelming to see a long street that you have to sweep. But the way he does it is "step, breathe, sweep, step, breathe, sweep. And before you know it, you've cleaned the entire street."
I've always tried to remember that when I get overwhelmed by tasks or just life in general.
as an artist my favourite quote is from the painter Paul Klee talking about drawing he said "Drawing is like taking a line for a walk" and that has always resonated with me. I love that you quoted Sylvia Plath, she is a heroine of mine and "The Bell Jar" ias one of my favourite books.
I think we hear snippets of wisdom through out our life that stay with us and have meaning at the time and then more so later on. I bet people have favourite quotes from you and Jamie that have inspired them. Another quote that for me is poetic by Frida Khalo after her toes had to be amputated she said "Why do I need feet when I have wings to fly" and I always felt it meant her painting gave her the wings,as a recent amputee myself this quote came to mind again.(Matt). Hi, I did a quick bit of research to see where some of the quotes were from, incase anyone was curious about them.
(Feel free to correct me if either of these are wrong, I only had a quick Google. Sorry!!)
The quote about assumptions is Lemony Snicket! (You were right!) Specifically, it's from Austere Academy. The fifth book in the A Series Of Unfortunate Events series.
And the quote about paradise was from a film called, The Beach.

My favourite quote is "hey sweet peas", and also "hey spuds" because they are delightful vegetables and Shaaba and Jamie help me to diet by proxy and make me feel appreciated with such a sweet nickname.
My favourite quote of all time is this quote from Black Sails:

I quote the first part of Good Omens wayyyy too often. It’s gotten to a point where whenever I say firstly (and summat after that) I need to say ‘Secondly, the Earth’s a Libra’
One of my favorite quotes at the moment is from a book released in March 2020 by an author whose writing I really enjoy. It reads:
“We do not get to choose when in our lives we feel pain. It comes when it comes, and we try to remember, even though we cannot imagine a day when it will release its hold on us, that all pain fades. All misery passes. Humanity is drawn to light, not darkness”.
I read this book right as the pandemic was taking hold in the U.S. (where I live) and have returned to this quote countless times since. It’s been quite comforting, especially amidst all the year’s uncertainty!
I'd bet the Rafiki quote was from when he whacked Simba in the head. Simba shouted in pain, but Rafiki just laughed, "The past can hurt, but the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it!” Also, I LOVE that last quote! I find it intensely relatable. Side note: lol I keep a note of quotes too. You are not alone sister!

I have 2 quotes that I really like. One is the same kinda idea as the moving forward fig tree one you mentioned: “Be decisive. Right or wrong - make a decision. The road of life is paved with flat squirrels who couldn’t make a decision.” I often will be overthinking and can’t decide and now I stop myself and tell myself not to be a flat squirrel to get me to move forward.
The other one is just something simple that for some reason speaks to me: “Some days there won’t be a song in your heart. Sing anyway” - Emory Austin
The paradise quote is from a movie called The Beach! Leonardo DiCaprio said it.

One that is useful for giving myself or anyone a reality check is "knowledge of one's ignorance is not wisdom, it's ignorance"
One I will always remember: “Don’t change so people will like you. Be yourself and the right people will love you.” My boyfriend said something quite similar on our first date, he said that if someone doesn’t like him, that is their problem, not his. His phrasing was a bit better than that and it really was an eye opener. The next day we met again and we went to a little cafe near my place for dinner. I had never been there and this quote was on the wall. Another one I like is “If you don’t like where you are, move. You are not a tree”.
And then there’s a lot from people like Brené Brown (like your first quote!), Elizabeth Gilbert and recently I’ve listened to a lot of Martha Beck. One from her is “Rest until you feel like playing, play until you feel like resting, period. Do nothing else”.
As an artist one of my favorite quotes is Earth without art is just 'eh', not sure where it's from!

I definitely knew the Rafiki quote you were talking about, although not word for word, and I see other people got to it in the comments already so I won’t repeat it. There’s a bit of a long quote I go back to when I need a bit of hope, and it’s from one of last arcs of a D&D podcast, The Adventure Zone. some of my favourite quotes are from the song album Atlas: Enneagram by Sleeping at Last, which describes the journeys of each of the nine enneagram types. Quotes such as, from Five (based on my type), "...like I could let myself be seen. Even deeply known. Like I was already brave enough to let go." Simple but beautiful.
Another is from Steven Universe's Here Comes a Thought, which I recite when I'm spiralling into a mental breakdown or anxiety attack - "Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love and trust."

Some of my favorite quotes come from the acknowledgments at the end of books. I have a whole list saved of really touching advice/thank yous authors put at the end of their books. My other go to quotes are The Office (american version) lol
Okay so the quote I throw around at EVERY situation is from the Hunchback of Notre Dame "Well that's what you get for sleeping with your mouth open." It fits surprisingly well in every situation 🤣
