Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers 15/19 songs liked - overall score: 78.94% The first list is strictly based of songs I liked more from album to album. My personal ranking based on themes and concepts would be: 1. good kid, m.A.A.d city 2. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers 3. DAMN. 4. To Pimp A Butterfly 5. Section.80 Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is Kendrick Lamar's deepest and most vulnerable album, and I think it will be his best album overtime. He is so expressive and open, although his breakthrough is messy, it’s necessary to live a healthy life. When I first came across good kid, m.A.A.d city, it had a huge impact in my life, I would play the album from beginning to end repeatedly. By far my most listened to album. good kid, m.A.A.d city can be summarized as a short concise story, told around the childhood of Kendrick Lamar and his rough up upbringing, shining a light into his adolescent years and the way his environment, friends and family have had an impact on him growing up. I feel like this albums sets up the way for his other albums nicely, which all cover the areas of his life where his personal struggles can all stem back to his life in Compton. DAMN. has an amazing theme, were Kendrick struggles between the duality of many familiar emotions, but I feel like Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is like a sequel or the conclusion that Kendrick reaches to get over his own judgments that he had in DAMN. To Pimp A Butterfly is such a massive and dense masterpiece. The resentment Kendrick has throughout this album, his struggles he’s trying to break free of, and the challenges he faces is undoubtedly one of the reasons why To Pimp A Butterfly is so overwhelmingly loved by his fans. This album is by far his most artistic in my opinion, and the fact that it is so ambitious makes it the most challenging to try and get into. While Section.80 may seem to be his most underrated album at times, it certainly doesn’t lack anything thematically. The message is about letting go of the prejudice that often occurs in the black community, and to instead treat each other with respect. It focuses on the issues , and hardships the black community has faced during the Ronald Regan Era. The album is told in the perspectives of different individuals who have all suffered the same oppression, by the government and their own black community. This album explores the idea of building a strong community, which you realize if truly important especially when good kid, m.A.A.d city comes into place and how that album is a microcosm for much bigger things. Also please let me know if I didn’t mention something that you think is important for others to know.

@wasabijones4571 Damn is easily better than mr morale, section 80… UU is a great project but damn still takes it. People discredit damn for having tracks like god and loyalty, but just seem to complete forget about the rest of the album and the fact it has like 5 of his best songs of all time. Mr morale is 50% filler, with little to no replay value, and the only standout track is mother I sober

5. Section .80 4. Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers 3. good kid, m.A.A.d city 2. DAMN. 1. To Pimp a Butterfly Honestly, all of these are outstanding bodies of work and shouldn’t be overlooked including his work not included in the list. Each album is unique and special. Truly one of the best overall discographies ever.
Great vid. If i had only one disagreement, its mr morale. I actually have it slightly above damn. Damn is a good album but there are couple songs that are weak for kendrick. Mr morale is rawer, more personal and more emotionally impactful. I think there are individual tracks on damn that are better and maybe even top 10 in his discography, but considering kendricks character arc and artistic growth, i might go mr morale.
Its so hard to say which album is better but this was the breakthrough like you said its amazing to think all his albums are amazing or perfect in the tear list
It’s insane how much I’ve grown in regards to listening to GKMC and TPAB. I was 10 when GKMC came out and 13 when TPAB came out and admittedly I only resonated with GKMC because the radio appeal definitely made the album easier to digest. “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”, “Swimming Pools” and “Poetic Justice” is such a fine example of not sacrificing meaning or story telling for a polished, radio friendly sound. At 13 I couldn’t grasp how dense TPAB was and the sound turned me away immediately. When I turned 15 my love of music grew to listening to entire albums and researching the meaning behind the projects and I returned to TPAB to give it a proper listen. My god I was floored. Reading people’s interpretation of the album, recognizing the poem being recited matched the theme of the songs playing, and him talking to 2Pac at the end blew me away. I went back to GKMC to give it a proper listen as well and I couldn’t believe what I missed. The story telling, the characters, the portrait Kendrick paints is unparalleled. Admittedly I revised TPAB more than GKMC because the jazz-rap sound of TPAB is addicting to me. “Alright”, “How Much a Dollar Cost”, “Momma”, “These Walls”, and so much more make the album for me. I’m 20 now and still I return to all these different albums and fully appreciate the music that Kendrick has made and it makes me appreciate the sheer amount of thought, care, and attention to detail a man can put into a project. I love the breakdown gents, keep up the great work!
My Ranking 5. DAMN 4. MMTBS 3. TPAB 2. Section 80 1. GKMC Although so much to enjoy of all of Kendrick discography from the descriptive imagery of his personal life & finding a sense with God it’s always have spoken throughout his career. Especially on TPAB while I believe it’s his best project spoken word poetry, Live jazz instrumentation and neatly woven together concepts on Caterpillar coming from the cocoon and awakes of the nest it’s the butterfly where solely represent pimping the struggles of the livelihood of the industry. GKMC has always been my favorite of his work where I’d find it somewhat relatable to myself. Great Breakdown NFR podcast keep up the great work.
1. TPAB. Favourite song: how much a dollar cost? 2. Section .80. Favourite song: Ab Souls Outro 3. GKMC. favourite song: sing about me 4. Mr Morale. Favourite song: mirror 5. Damn. Favourite song: FEEL.
@@NFRPodcast , TPAB is a great album in many ways with lots of my favorite kendrick songs but the funk is definitely not within me. I respect him because he went with a pretty bold production style that most people loved but for me I much prefer the production overall on the three albums I have ahead of it. I think the concept and the writing was more interesting on TPAB than on section .80 or DAMN but I put a lot of weight on the production and to me it was enough to knock it below those two. GKMC has always been the one perfect album and easy number 1 for me.
@@dkvitaleme I'm glad you asked! I love the album in any ways but I got to knock it because a lot of the funk inspired production was not for me. See the rest of my response to the NFR comment.
Quality > Quantity Half a decade of waiting was too much, but still, we got a great album, I'm okay with a 2-3 year wait for an great and memorable project.
5. DAMN 4. Section.80 3. Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers 2. Good Kid, MAAD City 1. To Pimp a Butterfly All grade A albums. Just levels of A. One of the few artists with no misses.
I’d put Mr Morale over Damn, but just barely. Butterfly, Damn, Morale, and Good Kid are almost all tied for me. They’re so close to me in quality, and my ranking changes from week to week.
For me I’m neck and neck between GKMC and TPAB. GKMC has so many bangers and everyone song can be enjoyed out of the album context, but as an album TPAB is just so well made. It’s so hard to choose one
To me especially the 2010 era he came up in. It’s amazing to me we got such a varied artist that wasn’t just an underground loved MC, wasn’t just a overlooked artist in the mainstream, but no matter the years it changes with the culture and music he retains almost a mythological reverence as not just a hip hop MC but an artist. The skill and talent it requires to literally break all boundaries, catapult to the top, have the respect and be as loved and anticipated is something we don’t see, as it’s happening for that generation . We look back on greats much later and after they have created their greatest works, it feels like the legends are often in and from the past, but I feel happy I witnessed someone like Kendrick during his rise and reigns on dominance in music period

GKMC is deff a top 5 album of all time, But TPAB is quite literally a mesterpiece. Probably the greatest music album of all time period. Also, i would put MR morale above DAMN.
@@rjoneill06 Damn has the musical accompaniment is just the least interesting to me (with some notable acceptions: Yah, pride etc.). The song writing and stories are still amazing especially on songs like pride, blood and ducksworth. Also this is the only album where his performance is a hinderance imo it really bogs down songs like Loyalty, god and XXX although as with every album there are outstanding performaces too. Still a great album I could be pushed to an 8 some of my fav songs are on it. Mr Morale is pretty much perfect for me other than die hard and purple hearts with are definatly weak points on the album. Every song in so deep in meaning an passion (both in his performance and lyrically). The instrumentals are so simple yet effective; it makes the album feel so grounded. This album also has the most songs I would consider perfect other than TPAB- Mr Morale, Father time, Crown, Worldwide Steppers and apparently The Heart Part 5 is now on Disk 3 which has become one of my favourite songs of all time. What do you think is top 2 if not Mr morale and TPAB?
my top 5 based on personally how much I connected to them would be: 1. Good Kid, mAAD city 2. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers 3. To Pimp a Butterfly 4. DAMN. 5. Section 80.
I haven't fully watched the video yet, but my listing is: 1. TPAB 2. GKMC 3. MM&TBS 4. Section 80 5. DAMN. TPAB got me through a lot, it was always on my rotation during the summer of 2015. I'm emotionally invested into that album. GKMC is just phenomenal top to bottom. I know MM&TBS is new, but I'm still listening to it everyday top to bottom. I just really like this album. Section 80 is insanely underrated, and it shows his roots. Finally, I have DAMN. Let me be frank, Kendrick Lamar has not dropped a bad album. They're all great. I just don't go back to DAMN. as much anymore. I honestly can't listen to humble or DNA that much anymore, especially humble. With that said xxx is still one of my favorite songs. I love all his bodies of work though!
L take, damn and GKMC are by far the albums w the most replay value. Even if you can’t listen to humble or dna - there are still some of his best tracks of all time on there w feel, fear, pride, etc. dna never gets old tho, it’s easily his best performance

What’s crazy about this video is that I’ve been a Kendrick fan, but i’ve never ever dived this deep into his albums or storytelling, this video makes me want to explore deeper into his discography and explore the messages, the themes, the stories, everything. People call him a GOAT, but in all honestly I just don’t think I understand. I think I typically look for music that gives an instant gratification to the sounds and bars, but this is inspiring to look at music more as someone’s individual art, and that I need to challenge myself to dive deeper and try and understand all these things I mentioned above.
GKMC is my favorite bc of the way Kendrick can paint a picture with words and delivery and the instrumentals. Maad city still gives me goosebumps bc it puts you right there in the moment with the violence and horror bc of Kendrick’s delivery and the instrumental.
I love MM&TBS, as crazy as it sounds, there’s a huge part of me that wants to put it at number 1, but GKMC and TPAB are so good. I love theater and it’s so theatrical and so personal, plus it’s got great bangers, but it’s just not better than GKMC or TPAB
TPAB & GKMC are both great hip hop albums. Unbiased, TPAB has replay value ofc and good tracks, currently still growin on me. GKMC is timeless, bars are crazy, nostalgia effect, and workin with dre. My favorite kendrick album is GKMC

Section 80. Is my favorite kendrick album for the fact it was my intro to kendrick back in 2012...I think his best best project is TPAB but damn "you can have all my shine I give you the light" will forever be legendary!
This may be unpopular but I absolutely love DAMN. FEAR and DUCKWORTH are my favourite tracks. Both are very pleasing to the ears and both a very sombre tracks. The plot twist at the end of DUCKWORTH. left my mouth wide open. I love DAMN. My least favourite track is probably HUMBLE. or GOD. Yet I still enjoy both tracks. I can't put GKMC over TPAB nor TPAB over GKMC. Yet I have yet to listen to TPAB fully. MM&BS is good, I love father time and auntie diaries. We cry together is another good one. I have yet to Section 80 fully aswell. Here's my ranking: 1. DAMN. 2. GKMC/TPAB 4. MM&BS 5. Section 80
My god the first person to see damn the way I do. Most people who dislike damn for its storytelling don’t even know you can play the album backwards and have it still make sense. Fear, Duckworth and Pride are all in my top ten, and this album is definitely the most sonically pleasant to listen to.
@melly7921 facts. The album can be played backwards and have a different meaning/ending, it has many ties to religion throughout, DNA is easily his best rapping performance on a track, Fear is arguably his best song of all time, feel and pride are also both 2 of his best tracks, duckworth is the best hip hop storytelling track ever. And yet people discredit the whole album because of god and loyalty??? Haven’t enjoyed and album as much as I have damn since it was released
Imma be biased and say all his albums are dope af! Listening to them in order in terms of growth, skill, perspective, and producing, man I have to say he is a legend. All favorites albums can appeal to anyone one way or another

I prefer TPAB. Like y'all have stated that it is one of Kdot's best produced albums. I will say though, I do have a bias to this album. It was really my first album that I really listened to when I first got more into searching for music instead of just listening to the radio. TPAB was the first I ever really listened to, already being a big fan of Kendrick. With it having a story/concept in it, I took from this album that other albums can be as beautiful as this. The first list is strictly based of songs I liked more from album to album.
My personal ranking based on themes and concepts would be:
1. good kid, m.A.A.d city
2. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
3. DAMN.
4. To Pimp A Butterfly
5. Section.80
Mr.
1) good kid, m.A.A.d city - Sing About Me

@wasabijones4571 Damn is easily better than mr morale, section 80… UU is a great project but damn still takes it. People discredit damn for having tracks like god and loyalty, but just seem to complete forget about the rest of the album and the fact it has like 5 of his best songs of all time.
Absolutely
I think DAMN is slightly better
DAMN has higher highs.
I love how much you guys put into these videos. The research and time you’ve put in is evident

Although so much to enjoy of all of Kendrick discography from the descriptive imagery of his personal life & finding a sense with God it’s always have spoken throughout his career.
