Its a good question, I admit I left working in government investigations and consumer protection when confronted with complaints from consumers protesting that I was being too hard on the company stealing their money. I left corporate legal when I kept being asked why defrauding customers was bad while the customer gave that sales rep a 10/10 rating for embezzling a few $100k from them. Johnny Average just wants the boot on his neck while they take his wallet and kill his dog, I think the populace just prefers to be taken advantage of, of having a bastard standing over them telling them what to do, there really is no helping people and the law functionally provides nil protection from any white-collar crime so now I don't bother. I'm fixing to turn 41 in September. I didn't really start paying attention to politics till around my 2nd year of highschool at 15/16. There isn't a single thing I have seen the highest level of our government do in all the years I've even remotely payed attention to them, that has "helped" anyone exc3pt themselves. There isn't a single member of our government whom I can say has tried to compromise on any issue between the two parties. There isn't a single member of our government whom I can say has tried to bring the people of the country together. All any of them have done, in all the years I've been paying attention, is play at childish "us against them" games, and further and further divide the country. All any of them have done is "not waist a good crisis". Rather than solving the issues creating/sustaining them, they instead focus on how best they can make the most use of them for their own political careers. The recent Pandemic being the greatest of all examples as they couldn't even make 1, single, separate, bill to help struggling businesses they forced to close, or families they forced out of work. No. They "had to not waist a good crisis" and instead attached it to the overall spending plan for the government. Using the vary people of this country as bargaining chips to push for funding for their various assorted interests. (Which is why the COVID relief bill was 7000 pages... it wasn't a seperate bill all on its own). I have absolutely 0 faith in this countries federal government. The fact democrats are trying so hard to remove the filibuster, the last line of defence for a true democracy in the senate rather than it turning into a dictatorship like the house is, just further pushes me away from having any faith in them. And by them, I mean "all" members. Republican, Democrat, independent, all.
How is the Senate democratic in any way, shape, or form? Wyoming, population less than 600k, and California, population 39M, have 2 Senators each. Republican Senators have less than half of the votes that Democratic Senators have, but control half the seats. How is this democratic? The House may be gerrymandered, but at least on paper it's significantly more democratic than the Senate.
I'm cynical about it all too. However, I want to point out the the Dems don't actually want to get rid of the filibuster or it would have happened already. They want it in place because it gives them the excuse to not make any big changes that would benefit working Americans and affect the profits of corporations and other big money interests. Congress basically exists to create laws that benefit the 1%. Progressives are trying to change that.. Getting money out of our political system is an enormous challenge and at the heart of our problems as a country.

When I say "democratic', I mean a system were the minority vote (and I don't mean minority as in a race, I mean minority as in 49/100) still has a voice that has power. The fillibuster is essentially the protection of the minority vote. Rather than "everything" being decided by a simple 51/49 vote as the house is, the senate requires a "full majority" (that being 60/40) on most things. It'd not perfect, but it's better than rule by simple majority as the house is.

I'm fixing to turn 41 in September.
I didn't really start paying attention to politics till around my 2nd year of highschool at 15/16.
There isn't a single thing I have seen the highest level of our government do in all the years I've even remotely payed attention to them, that has "helped" anyone exc3pt themselves.
There isn't a single member of our government whom I can say has tried to compromise on any issue between the two parties.
There isn't a single member of our government whom I can say has tried to bring the people of the country together.
All any of them have done, in all the years I've been paying attention, is play at childish "us against them" games, and further and further divide the country.
All any of them have done is "not waist a good crisis". Rather than solving the issues creating/sustaining them, they instead focus on how best they can make the most use of them for their own political careers. The recent Pandemic being the greatest of all examples as they couldn't even make 1, single, separate, bill to help struggling businesses they forced to close, or families they forced out of work. No. They "had to not waist a good crisis" and instead attached it to the overall spending plan for the government. Using the vary people of this country as bargaining chips to push for funding for their various assorted interests. (Which is why the COVID relief bill was 7000 pages... it wasn't a seperate bill all on its own).
I have absolutely 0 faith in this countries federal government.
The fact democrats are trying so hard to remove the filibuster, the last line of defence for a true democracy in the senate rather than it turning into a dictatorship like the house is, just further pushes me away from having any faith in them.

How is the Senate democratic in any way, shape, or form? Wyoming, population less than 600k, and California, population 39M, have 2 Senators each. Republican Senators have less than half of the votes that Democratic Senators have, but control half the seats. How is this democratic?
The House may be gerrymandered, but at least on paper it's significantly more democratic than the Senate.
I'm cynical about it all too. However, I want to point out the the Dems don't actually want to get rid of the filibuster or it would have happened already. They want it in place because it gives them the excuse to not make any big changes that would benefit working Americans and affect the profits of corporations and other big money interests. Congress basically exists to create laws that benefit the 1%. Progressives are trying to change that.. Getting money out of our political system is an enormous challenge and at the heart of our problems as a country.

When I say "democratic', I mean a system were the minority vote (and I don't mean minority as in a race, I mean minority as in 49/100) still has a voice that has power.
The fillibuster is essentially the protection of the minority vote. Rather than "everything" being decided by a simple 51/49 vote as the house is, the senate requires a "full majority" (that being 60/40) on most things.
It'd not perfect, but it's better than rule by simple majority as the house is.
