Just installed mine today. Jillian's video was spot on. No hiccups during installation. Can't get more detailed than this installation video. Thanks Apex Overland!!
Thanks!
I am definitely not a mechanic. Combine lack of experience, a desire for perfection, and a bad shoulder and I am able to turn a simple 30 minute project into a four (4) hour ordeal.
When I performed my install, I had a hand ratchet, a torque wrench, metal file, and my 4Runner was on the ground.
Things I would change about my install:
* I have floor jacks. I don't know why I didn't use them. You can do a floor install, but it would have been much easier with the extra space - in my opinion.
* I need to buy an impact drill. I had trouble inserting the bolts into the frame. I tried to hand tighten them. They would go in a little way and I was no longer able to tighten them. In the video, Jillian performed it was little effort. I was afraid I was cross threading them. I don't know how much time I spent inserting bolts, eyeballing them, worrying about them being cross threaded, removing them, then starting again (remember - I am an inexperienced perfectionist). I believe this problem was due to my lack of experience, having a small work space, and using hand tools. I called Jillian from Apex after the fact. She told me it shouldn't have been that difficult. Again - I chalk this problem to operator error (me).
* I tried hand filing the "boogered up" welds with a hand metal file. I think the only thing I did was polish the weld, smooth my metal file, and make my shoulders & arms sore. Though it's not a best-practice, I said to myself, "Self - heck with it, just put the recovery points on." I primed and painted the newly polished portion of my frame and installed the recovery points even with the "boogered up" welds. If I had it to do over, I would've found a friend with a grinder or seen if I could rent one from Home Depot.
Things that went well:
* The video is awesome. The video breaks all the steps down and easily understood. I watch a lot of DIY RUclips videos. I was all of them were this good.
* Removing air dam, OEM skid plate, and sway bar went well. Removing the bolts was tougher than expected.
Thing I will repeat:
Buying items for my 4Runner from Apex Overland. I called them months ago about an issue. They were extremely helpful. When I spoke with Jillian recently, she was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. Apex's prices are great. Their customer service is greater.
Final Comments: If you have average mechanical ability and proper tools, I think you can correctly do this install relatively quickly. If you're below average and don't have the right tools (like me), it will take longer - but it's definitely doable. I'm glad I used Apex Overland and I'm glad I did the install myself.
Please make an instructional video like this one for installation of the recovery points for a KDSS equipped 4runner. Thank you.
Were waiting for a customer with KDSS at the shop here request an install. Its pretty easy just like this.
I did the install today, took me about 40-45 mins by myself on the ground. The toughest part for me was putting my TRD skid plate back on lol. Thank you for the video.
Just ordered mine. Thanks for the detailed instructions. Hope my install is as smooth
I just finished installing these (and a TRD skid plate). Watching this video a couple of times before starting helped a lot. I took my time, and used a jack to help hold the sway bar in place while installing the new bolts. The only minor issue I ran into was, as others have mentioned, having the lock washers spread when torquing the 19mm bolts down to the recommended spec. Over all, it was fairly easy thanks to this video.
Man I wish this video had come out sooner. I bought mine about the time these were released. Couldn't get it to fit. Stumbled upon this video a couple weeks ago and learned that you had to grind some welds down. Oh boy. They're finally on now. 😅
Great product, great installation video. My experience in reinstalling sway-bar mounts: everything snugged-up fine, however; the passenger-side, rear mounting-bolt stripped, while torquing. My dealer’s mechanic advised that the sway-bar ought to be supported when reinstalling bolts so the bolt holes align. The OEM bolts have a shoulder under the head which helps the alignment of bolts into frame. Letting one side of the sway-bar hang while installing new hardware on the opposite side, may have contributed to the issue.
Thank you for mentioning that this can be done on the ground towards the end !
When is the KDSS equipped 4Runner video going to come out for this?
At 9:20 are the torque specs: 70/40/18
Excellent video, thank you. Like another commenter, I did find the bolts a bit difficult to insert by hand - I screwed them in with a ratchet initially just to be sure my torque wasn’t trying to cross thread them. My only issue When I torqued to the specs they stated, my locking washers started disfiguring and spreading out beyond the head of the nut. I stopped tying to get to their torque specs - happened on the 19mm and the 17mm bolt. It’s like the lock washers are too soft for that torque spec
Same thing happened to me.
Same thing happened to me. The lock washer on the passenger side of the 19mm distorted completely on install. Driver's side was fine though.
2024 off road premium with TRD pro skid plate - I did NOT need to remove the skid plate to install with normal ratchets and torque wrench.
Looks solid, might have to get these for my freshly bought ORP
What primer and paint do you recommend for those ground-down welding boogers?
Is this the same for KDSS equipped 4runners?
Would it be a bad idea to put some anti-seize on those bolt threads?
Great instruction and product 🤟🏼
Thanks!
Should we be using loc-tite for all these bolts?
What size are the sway bar bracket bolt size?
What size tap do you need for the big bolt holes?
M12X1.25
Going to instill mine tomorrow didn't realize it was so easy lol
Will these work if you have sway bar relocation bracket from icon?
Any update on the kdss install video? I want to purchase but would like to see the install first
Waiting for a customer who wants a set installed here at the shop. They are not that hard at all.
The install instructions lay it out pretty well:
docs.google.com/document/d/1G1iJyldjuCiuSRDcdm4AJw097PGmzOTa8SrXLhcfdIQ/edit?usp=sharing
Very cool - I see you have KDSS versions available now but those instructions say to remove the front bumper and crash bar? Why can't I just go from underneath the same as you did here? I have a 2022 TRD ORP. Thx - Thomas
The reason you need to remove the bumper and crash bar is because it’s the best way of feeding the bracket with welded nuts through the frame. KDSS-equipped 4Runners have the two holes where the normal front swaybar would attach, but they are not threaded.
Thanks for the vid. Had these sitting in my garage for over a year. Time to put them on. You don't recommend anti seize, or blue loctite?
No need for blue loctite, the lock washers we have found do the job! As far as antisieze, would be a good idea if you live in a high corrosion climate.
Is the KDSS video available now.
Yeah its been over 5 months :( I just bought them for my 13' w/ KDSS. Just waiting for time to remove the bumper.
@@caseyjames5412 Yeah the video is now available. I just want to know about the drilling i guess.
@@bclarymd Do you have the link to the video? I didn't see it on their RUclips channel. The instructions on their website did seem pretty straight forward.
@@caseyjames5412 Sorry yeah - the video is now available? i too am looking for the link...
@@bclarymd I found the drilling to be straight forward. On my 4Runner, the holes where the non-KDSS swaybar would mount were there, but one hole on each side was covered by a metal tab inside the frame. You just need to drill through the tab so that you can feed the bolt through to the bracket with welded nuts. Before installing the recovery points, I sprayed the holes I drilled with POR-15 to keep the bare metal from rusting. Hope this helps!
Is this compatible with T4R 2022 TRD Pro?
Could the sway bar performance be affected if you lower it a bit?
Is your product WLL rated?
Does it engraved onto the product?
Thanks

Great vid / tips, thanks !
make sure you torque to spec, I was not even close for how tight I thought it was
Very nice but would like for Tacoma third gen.
there is no provisions in the frame for them, we have tried!
@@ApexOverland ah! Ok. Thank you.
Is this possible to do without jacking up the car?
Yes you can do it with the 4runner on the ground
nice video...hi. I just want to know what is the thread pitch of the 19mm bolt coz I can't find anything here in my local hardware store...thank you
Did you receive all the hardware in your kit?
nope...I'm from Saskatchewan Canada...I can buy it somewhere here if you can give me the exact details on that 19mm bolt like the thread pitch coz we are leaving for a trip this weekend..tnx
@@kinesiumlegaspi3322 M12x1.25 is the large bolt size
tnx...
Will this fit if we have a sway bar drop kit?
yes it will
Do you have to take the Skid plate off?
you don't have to, but it makes it easier, especially with the stock skids
do i need to put loctite on the bolts?
No, you will not need to
7/8" or 3/4" shackles for these?
3/4
@@ApexOverland , Thank you, so much!
Has anyone else tried to put 3/4” shackles on these? I did, and it turns out that the factory tie-down loop is too close to the recovery points to allow it to fit!
If I buy used brackets can i order the bolt kit from yall?
yes the bolt kit is available on our website
@@ApexOverland its ON your website but not "available." 😝 Thanks for the quick response. Yall have tons of great products.
Can those be added to KDSS Forerunners?
Check out our website for the KDSS version
The website says drilling required?
There is no drilling on this version. The KDSS version does require drilling.
This is tacoma or four runner.........?????
