So if you're trying to maximize for ignition cut sound (braps) on the G42 platform here are my magic numbers:
1-2 + 20
2..6 + 25
7..8 + 35
To produce the sound reliably you need to be on full throttle at at least 4K rpm regardles of ignition cut settings.
As an exercise I've spent months and probably 50+ flashes dialing in the torque reduction settings on my '23 G42 with the purpose of maximizing the ignition cut brap sounds. I can tell you +4 is too low if that is your goal. The reason I've had to spend so much time is that getting the sound is quite finnicky. Too little and it sounds closer to what we hear in this video And not to knock Mevans here, but his ignition cut sounds are practically nonexistant compared to what it's capable of. You'll know you've applied too much torque reduction when your turbo sounds like a large deflating balloon (kerplumbpffff) so the solution isn't to just slide everything to the right either (not to mention you'll really feel the lift shift, trust me on this).
Granted if you're looking for pre-emission update G20 ignition cuts, you won't be able to get that obnoxious without an actual BM3/MHD tune and anyone who knows anything about post '20 BMW tuning is that you have to send your ECU for an all expense vacation to finland. Most of my tuning was done before the new ignition cut control setting, and it seems that torque reduction has the greatest impact on the brap sound. The new setting hasn't really helped that much b/c I think there needs to be a certain amount of boost for the ignition cut to actually produce audible sounds.
Personally I haven't noticed that many issues with shift smoothness but to be honest I'm usually blasting around town in the manual mode. First gear you can get actual ignition cut sounds with as little as +10 iirc. The rest of the gears it's harder to produce the sound. Also I find the ignition cut sounds are loudest right after the car exits the cold start mode, but the exhaust is warmed up just right. At that sweet spot I can even get single gunshot pops downshifting as early as possible shifting from 4-3,3-2.
I've been trying to get some footage of my car for bimmerpost, but my phone doesn't really pick up sounds well (more wind sounds than anything). By the way my car is completely stock so far except for an MPE.
Interesting insight. I believe there’s some differences between the F and G chassis though, because I’ve seen lots of people with really high torque reduction numbers trying to get the shift sounds, and it made little to no difference. There’s definitely a lot that goes into it and it’s very finicky. My +4 reduction was simply to tweak the “feel” of the shifts, not necessarily to increase noise. I kept them consistent throughout testing trying to isolate the difference made by the new settings.
@@mevans8646 Yeah you can't just slide everything to the right to get the sounds. You'll just get that kerpumbfff defalting baloon sound and a ultra lurchy shift. The sounds are a byproduct of the ignition cut and you basically need to guess the numbers. Like your margin of error is like within 3.5 percent. Like for gears 2.. 6 if you go with less than +23 or greater than +27 it can mess with both the consistency and volume of the sounds. First gear is pretty easy to get the sound though. Feel free to give my settings a try and see how it turns out.
@@mevans8646if you wanted a DCT car you should have bought one. Mine dsg farts loudly but i’m not the biggest fan
@@SalmonVFX I actually do plan on buying one some time next year wink 😉
Are you using the default settings 4000rpm and 300nm?
This is amazing to me. I always wanted a first gen RS5, but I didn't buy one because I couldn't get one in 6MT..... I wanted a 6MT because I couldn't stand the DSG fart. People who don't have that sound are intentionally trying to add it? WOW. I had no idea. People like what they like, I just had no idea.
To each their own, I’m not a big fan of burble tunes yet I like the shift farts for some reason 🤷♂️
Thanks for the info, Nice to have a vídeo showing the difrence . going to try it out
Didn’t know about this update! Interested in seeing what it does
Is it me or are you a bit dissapointed in the end when it gets to the max of what it does?

Why are the stock shifts no xhp louder than the shifts with ignition cut upshift? Not sure if it was just the video and in person is different, but it doesnt sound like you would expect it to sound, have u heard a 2020 m340 stock upshift, its much louder
Yeah the new G series cars have much more pronounced upshift noise even from factory. Even with the new ignition cut, it’s not that loud for the F series.
Is it the same zf transmission or different@@mevans8646
@@zendy04it’s different, stock m340 gearbox shifting faster then f series even with xhp st3, and g80 is faster then g20 with xhp st3
Good, informative video and testing!
Did you have brap disabled from mhd when testing xHP?
I have brap disabled in mhd (although Inlikednit) as it ruins (as in disables) the “gunshot” and “popcorns” I otherwise have. Seems to be an either or deal… how is it with ignition cut from xHP?
In the clips with the ignition cut, I had MHD brap turned off. I still kinda have one though I think because I’m an M-lite, you can hear the difference in my “before” video at the beginning I note that it had the MHD short brap. With the MHD brap, it definitely interfered with the burbles, but if you turned up the duration (to account for the time it’s brap-ing you should still get some I think.
@@mevans8646 Thanks for the quick response. For me the thing is my burbles and gunshots come from MPPSK, I have them all set to off in MHD (which takes over the MPPSK settings). When I had brap on, even when there was no audible brap (e.g. when letting off of the throttle), there were no burbles. Which was annoying so I had to turn brap off.
Curious what will happen with ignition cut from xHP without changing anything in mhd. I do have that brrrp sound when changing gears now but only in Comfort and higher RPMs (I.e. stick to S). None in Sport or Sport+ due to the faster shifts I guess…
Are you planning to keep ignition cut instead of MHD’s brap in your case?
I didn’t like the way the MHD brap sounded anyways, so yeah I plan on keeping the ignition cut
Doee this have any pros or cons on performance?? Or is it for pure sound?
I haven’t noticed any difference in performance, mostly just for sound I believe, even if they say it’s quicker.
How does the ignition cuts sound along with the MHD Brap ?
They’re separate things, MHD brap happens on throttle lift and the shift brap happens when you shift. They shouldn’t really affect each other except for the situation where you shift and lift off throttle simultaneously.

It’s in MHD too, and from stock in my M140i called overrun brap.
That’s different. That’s when you’re getting off the throttle. This is when you change gears. But yes the M-lites do have some level of ignition cut from factory.
@@mevans8646 nah but between gear shifts it’s making a farting sound. It does have a downpipe and it’s in sport plus sport mode gearbox. I am going to get xHP tho

Is there a way to remove the shift brap? Unpopular opinion lol
Don’t use the shift brap option. Otherwise, not really as far as I’m aware.
Yes. You slide the torque reduction slider into the minus scale, start with 5% increments until you are happy with the noise and shift speed. The transmisssion will shift gears faster when you go lower into the torque reduction and your car will accelate faster too since you don't lose momentum between gearshifts.
Would be nice of you to document what you do, and post it here on YT.
shiftbrap is stock on our cars. @@mevans8646
@@1bmw_Clubsport Question, how does the torque reduction upshift differ exactly from ignition cut, don't they both reduce torque?
@@hyphed4196 Ignition cut is cutting ignition, torque reduction can be done on multiply ways, throttle closure, or lowering timing advancement, all instances reduce power hence lower the torque.
Why it’s sound like stock m340 braaps on shifts?
G series cars seem to have more shift brap than F series
What does pressing traction button once in comfort mode do? I thought it already has tc on default in comfort
It puts you in what’s called “traction mode” which is basically comfort mode but with exhaust burbles and decreased traction control.
But what if i want an aggressive backfire on shift sound like evo's, supras, gtr's and subaru rally cars
There’s another extensive comment somewhere on this video where someone documented his settings to maximize shift noise. Ultimately it’s a balancing act between the ignition cut and torque reduction settings that will require a lot of experimentation depending on your setup. There’s no easy answer unfortunately.
Then buy one lol
Interesting, I had the same question @@mevans8646
let me know if u figure it out
@zendy04 I tried it its not that aggressive, but doesn't sound like a wet fart which is good. Gotta play with settings

I have a 440i with mppsk and i dont have any upshift noise. Any suggestions what might be wrong?

Can I have this on 3000 rpm’s? instead of 4 have you tried it ?
I found 4k to be the sweet spot, anything below that the shifts are a little too uncomfortable for my taste. The lower the RPM’s the more jerky they seemed to get.

But will the car explode?
There’s a 60% chance it might spontaneously combust, but that’s a chance I’m willing to take to hear it fart.
So when a car is upshifting there are multiple methods of torque reduction. The three main ways are throttle reduction, retarding timings, and ignition cut. What xHP does is enable the ability for the TCU unit to request a torque reduction to the ECU telling it to cut the ignition of the spark plugs. This usually ends up causing gasoline to combust in the turbo/exhaust which is what causes the sound. Ignition cut sounds (brap) are the byproduct of ignition cut. Does that slightly increase wear on those components, yes. Technically you're saving your clutches in your car however.
The whole reason ignition cut is prominently employed in DCT systems is that it's my understanding that the clutch plates are meant to snap shut as fast as possible as slippage causes excess wear. Ignition cut is a well established torque reduction method and has been a stock feature of the previous generations of the G42 platform e.g. the G20. If it weren't for the emissions crap we'd probably have the same pops and bangs as the G20 actually.
Wouldn’t this slow the car down?
XHP claims it would be faster:
8-Speed transmissions are able to cut off operation on one or more cylinders during shifting. This leads to faster shifting, at the expense of smoothness and also creates a distinctive exhaust note during shifts.
What dash is that it’s sick

would this work in the 7 speed dct?
I’m not sure if this option is available for the DCTs, this update was specifically for the ZF 8 speeds
It can work for any transmission, not sure if xhp will support it
Does leaving the car in the low settings for this feature affect the car ?
Leaving the sliders lower makes the low rpm shifts a bit too jittery to my liking, I moved it up to 3000rpm. Anything lower feels weird with the ignition cut to me
Is this for standard, medium and fast?
Does it work for a 428i with just a sport exhaust and stock downpipe?
Should, still has the ZF8 transmission
My xhp stage 3 2 or 1 removed any shift brap I had
Mine too bro🤣
