  • Wartime U.S Ambassador John Gil. Winant gives a moving and inspiring speech while unveiling the D-Day memorial plaque in Victoria Gardens, Portland, Dorset, England, UK. August 22nd 1945. After describing the historic events of June 1944, Winant warned about the 'sword of Damocles' - the newly developed Atomic Bomb,, which threatened the world. *Watch the end to hear what happened to the tragic John Winant after WW2. Audio transcribed from the original 78rpm shellac disc by Stuart Morris. The BBC records were extracts from an original shellac disc.
    The plaque reads:
    The Major part of the American Assault Force
    which landed on the shores of France on D-Day,
    June 6th; 1944, was launched from Portland Harbour.
    From June 6th, 1944, to May 7th, 1945,
    418,585 troops and 144,093 vehicles embarked
    from this Harbour.
    This plaque marks the Route which the vehicles
    and troops took en route to the points of embarkation.
