I can't believe that there's no mention of Andreas Brehme in the 1990 World Cup Final. Under the circumstances, it has to be one of the greatest penalties of all-time. It was not simply a penalty in a World cUp Final - there was more to it than that. With the scoreline at 0-0, 84 minutes into the match, Voller is awarded a penalty. The Argentine players deliberately delayed the penalty for several minutes by surrounding and protesting to the referee, so that the taker would be more nervous. Brehme had not touched the ball for several minutes because of the stoppage, and there were almost a billion people watching. The Argentine goalkeeper Goikechea had already heroically gotten Argentina through 2 penalty-shootouts to reach the final. The Germans' regular penalty-taker, Lothar Matthaus, didn't feel 100% confident about taking it, so when Beckenbauer asked the team if anybody else wanted it, Brehme raised his hand. It was a real bottle-job. Years later, Brehme said that, during the several mnutes he had to wait before taking the penalty, the goal kept shrinking. He was shaking in his boots, but you would never know that from the way he took it. Brehme puts the ball on the spot. The referee blows the whistle. Goikechea goes early, and guesses the right way, but Brehme's placement is just too perfect to give him a chance. He rolled it into the net - a daisy-cutter with lots of topspin, surgically slotted into the bottom left corner. Brehme showed that he had ice in his fucking veins.
Bro I can’t believe you wrote all that and didn’t mention that Brehme was left footed and scored that penalty with his right foot:) In fact there was a game before when he scored a free kick with his left foot and then this penalty with his right, making him probably the only player in the world who scored in two set pieces with different legs lol.
The absolutely best thing about Zaza's "dance" was the fact he was literally subbed in seconds before for that one, single shot. I will never not watch that partciular clip and yes, it gave me extra joy as he did this against my home country, Germany.
I love how these indians get so happy when someone from their country is shown. Like imagine a portugese commenting "ronaldo♥️🇵🇹" everytime they see ronaldo on youtube

Honorable Mentions: David Luiz against Bayern in the UCL Final (2012) Harry Maguire against Italy in the EUROs 2020 Final (2021) Fabio Grosso against France in the WC Final (2006) Totti against Netherlands in the EUROs SF (2000)
Nani was usually pretty good when he was playing for OCSC. He did miss a few but usually made most of our penalty shots. Julio Baptista absolutely skied one a few years ago against NYC FC.
- Cristiano’s last minute penalty vs Juventus (from the controversial foul on Lukas Vaskez) was the perfect placement and the perfect strength I ever saw. - Benzema’s panenka vs City made a whole stadium shut the hell up lol. - I was watching live the game where Jibril Cisse scored that penalty for Panathinaikos (I’m Greek) the ball didn’t get stuck in the corner, it stayed there spinning from the sheer force of it. He had missed a coup,e of easy chances before and he took out his frustration on the kick, it was one of the most powerful shots ever recorded.
What matters are the circumstances too: Panenka was the first one to try panenka penalty and he did it in the finals of the Euriopean cup - if he blew it, that would haunt him till the last day of his life - so for me Panenka's panenka is the best becuase of the bravery - but then again I am a Czech so what else could one expect from me.
Same for Alexis Sanchez in copa america 2015, he did a panenka penalty in the finals of the copa america (which was the last one in the shootout) and scored it making Chile win their first ever championship, if he missed that would’ve haunted him for his entire life
I'm Italian, but I gladly admit that, if this video had been made four months later, it would have certainly included Maguire's penalty at the Euro2020 final. Dude shot a legit rocket.
Marius Lacatus' penalty in the 1986 European Champions Cup is also one of those full-blast shots. What makes it different is that it was in the final of the most important club competition (so the pressure of what Zidane and Panenka had to deal with) and he took that shot after all 4 players before him (2 from each team) saw their penalties saved. It is rumoured that he said to his teammates "I'm going to f it so hard, no one is saving it".
Zidane’s penalty against Italy should be number 1 according to your own criteria (importance of the match, technique, etc.). That being said, I can see how Panenka and Ajax are up there, but the rest? Ezequiel Calvente? I mean, I’m from Spain and a football fan and barely got to know about that penalty...

It’s the final of the copa America, a year prior to this Chile had won their first ever copa america, they’re back again against Messi’s Argentina, this is also the 100th edition of the copa America, sanchez has a penalty to wins in and panenka’s the keeper, surely this gets a mention in this list, we all know if it was Messi who done that no one would be forgetting it in a hurry
Best penalty taker ever was Matthew Le Tissier who only missed once in 49 attempts for a 98% success rate. I doubt that will ever be bettered by anyone who takes a similar number.
