Actually they harass Kenyans more than any other category of arrivals at the airport, because they believe that all Kenyans import concealed items for trade purposes. Infact if your baggage exceeds 25 Kg your are guaranteed to go through this process.

Those orders came from him and his boss. KRA officials don't do things with impunity unless they know they have the backing of the big bosses. Even you, you can't go bullying others who are more economically powerful than you with impunity unless you have the protection of your big boss or higher power. When the plan goes south, they'll come out and pretend they didn't know anything while shifting blame away from them. It's typical of those in power

Going to visit back home is no longer a joy. I get anxiety at the thought of dealing with custom agents.
The opposite when travelling back to USA, they are so pleasant and actually say, ‘welcome back home’ as they stamp your passport.

Corruption at that airport is the root of all of it. KRa harass travelers to bargain for a lower corruption low charges in cash indoors. Cameras should be mounted all over even in bathroom doors to curb this behavior.

I'm mzungu that takes vacation 1-2 times a year to Africa. I used to go to tanzania for 4-5 years but last 5 years been taking vacation in Kenya .
Definitely looking at going back to tanzania on vacation, if Kenya government is going to make it more difficult to come on vacation..
I would think with the economic struggles at moment you would want to make it easier for tourists to come and spend money within the country..
I usually spend 1-2 million Kenyan shilling every time I come on vacation. If Kenya government don't want this, I'm sure tanzania or maybe Uganda would like my money..

looks like I might be going back to tanzania for vacation if the Kenyan government don't want my money spent in Kenya..
Why make it more difficult to come to a country with more drama and issues. Especially when I would think you want more tourists to come spend money and help out the economy..
Crazy when governments don't think out the solutions and make quick decisions without understanding the bigger economic impact.. scaring away tourists is only going to make it more difficult for Kenyans and create more struggles for economy..

The Nairobi Airport customs is known to be very corrupt, especially towards tourists. I was compelled to pay approximately $400 in fabricated tax fees for personal, used computer monitors.
Reflecting on the situation, I wish I had recorded the customs agent explaining the taxes, obtained a printed copy of their report, and recorded myself signing the document. Alternatively, leaving the monitors at the airport with a photo of the agent next to them might have been a better course of action.
By paying, you effectively admit guilt, and there is little chance of getting your money back. Unfortunately, there is no legal system to provide assistance in such cases.

Whoa! This is disgraceful. I love traveling to Kenya. I spend a month.w This is absolute B.S. The greed is appalling. This is taking this extortion thing to a new low. For Kenyans, traveling back to Kenya, I feel for them. If a family member needs a laptop for business, school, etc...you have to purchase it, then when you get to Kenya pay tax....the $500 limit is ridiculous... they should be zero tax on personal items and for gift $1500 -$2000. I'm taking a 15-hour flight to be harassed and extorted... no, thank you! There are other Afrakan countries to travel to, the Caribbean, etc. I usually walk with 2 phones, one US line, I use "Whatsapp on," and I get a Kenyan sim for the spare to call friends and contact business, etc. while in Kenya... now I can't walk with an extra phone. 😒 Most business professionals travel with 2 phones, one personal and one for business. Shame on "KRA".

Not true. I travel back and forth once a year or every 18months and take loads of braids and hair products back with me to. No one has ever questioned why I have travelled back with a suitcase full of braids and hair productions. Never. and I have never been taxed. The only times I have been directed to the customs lane is to check whether I have got any contrabands (not drugs). In addition, the customs officers are civll and handle my personal items with respect. Oh and they wear gloves both for their own personal protection. So, I don't know what countries you have travelled to but just so you know it is not the norm where some of us come from.
