      It is an expensive investment. The old saying "you get what you pay for" holds true here.
      I play 4 shows a week 52 weeks a year at Disney World on a Roland TD-50 drum kit. The whole band uses in ears.
      Here is an FYI, The amount I spent on my first 3 sets would have paid for my molded 4 way in ears:) The current cost with impressions is $750.
      I refer people out to Kim Fisher Ears here in the Orlando Florida area all the time.
      Also I use a butt kicker on my drum seat. I use a monitor out send and can dial in the crossover point to get the bass and kick drum balanced for a tight full sound.
      This is just my experience, there are a lot of options and products out there.
      Thank you and keep up the great post Stephen!!

      Charles Imo Totaly Agree...the butt kicker really helps you not lose that low end. And it’s true...Cheap is not always best. Like Andy said, what are you using them for? Let that inform your purchase. Always great to hear from you Charles!

    I took the plunge into in-ears without really knowing a lot about monitors. I was fortunate enough to use a local company who provided me with good information, I can honestly say it’s change my life!
    Gigging becomes a joy rather than having your ears blasted by monitors & I would never go back to gigging without them now!
    Protect your ears gang, you only get one pair!

    Hi Stephen, I'm one of your followers and a drum student of yours. Upon my inquiry of Alclair and your recommendation, I worked with Andy at Alclair and bought a pair of Alclairs ear monitors... This was a seamless purchase while working with Andy and the staff, I changed a few things mid-sale, and they bent over backwards to accommodate my requests. So, I want to publicly thank Alclair and Andy for an unbelievable product and the discount the gave, when I mentioned I was a student of yours.... and a huge thank you to you too Stephen, for another lesson learned.....

    If practicing or gigging in a club MEE audio M6 PRO have been a godsend for me: they isolate well with memory foam tips, have detachable memory wires, you can hear your base player and they run $40-50 for a set.

    My church has been using I’m ears for a few years and I just use the ones they have there when I drum, but I’ve recently been getting more gigs and most of them have been with wedge monitors, but I’ve gotta play one in two weeks with in ears and I gotta get a pair before then so I really appreciate the advice and thank you for being so dedicated to your channel

    Great stuff Stephen, I love my Alclair Dual XB's and I still have my Shure 215's as a back up just in case. I even use my molded earplugs for when I cannot use in-ears to protect my hearing on crazy live stages. :-)

      Frankie Drums I have them, and recommend them. They are tremendous for their price. I get a lot of really clear sound out of them, and the bass is really great as well.

    I started playing at a church, and use shure SE215s. I also use them as ear protection, but have noticed my ears still ring at times when I practice, or especially after a gig. Stephen I am very concerned about my hearing. What do you think, and can I get a good quality in-ears that will protect my hearing? One other note, I had to jack up the volume of my inears because of the loud volume of the cymbals, etc when I play live.
    Thoughts on Westone in ears?

    • @ajswanson
      @ajswanson 6 лет назад

      One of the benefits of in-ears is that they offer noise reduction. Ours (Alclair) offer about -26dB reduction. This is particularly important for drummers (and even more so if you are in an aquarium). The 215's won't offer quite that amount and they have a single dynamic driver. A balanced armature driver can generally get the sound closer to your ear drum and so it has much lower sound pressure levels than even headphones. Westone makes a great product. I tend to think they are a bit upper-endy my self, but they have been around a long time and make great ears. A custom mold is one of the best things you can do for long term hearing health.

    With respect to Stephen and Andy, to say Alclair is the best might be a stretch. One thing that really stood out for me in this interview was the reference to another company using the same drivers as Alclair. I suspect you are referring to a standard hearing aid driver, which would almost always be inferior to a proprietary driver that a company would take the time to research and develop. Thing is...you have to buy before you try a molded in ear. Therefore, it's hard to say who is best without trying them all...not feasible.
    I bought a pair of 'Future Sonics' in 2006 for $1000 and they're still going strong today. I use them regularly...

      Angelo Chappetta Hey Angelo...I state in this video, it’s personal preference when it comes to gear. The title to the video is not meant to convey that Alclair is “the best” (impossible to measure) but simply that if you want to pick the best in ear monitors for you, here’s 3 tips to help. In my opinion, what makes a product superior to others is the company behind it. But this video was by no means meant to make the claim that Alclair is the best in ear monitor company. Not even they will say that. But they’re a fantastic company with great customer support.
      Also, on your Future Sonics...really glad to hear they’ve lasted you that long! I bought a pair of theirs (my first) years back and they lasted me less than a year. They just didn’t hold up to the road work I was doing at the time. But really glad you’ve had a good experience with them.

    • @n0iseboy
      @n0iseboy 6 лет назад

      Agreed...customer support is a huge factor. We all have different finite hearing and there isn't necessarily a 'best'. Particularly musicians who have certainly lost something across the frequency spectrum over time. Personally, I've lost 3db at 3k. I've always tried to be responsible with my hearing but loud music over time will take its toll.
      Admittedly, I've always taken meticulous care of my in ears. Stored in their case and transported in a padded Pelican 1530. Sorry to hear yours failed you. I always delt directly with Marty who owns the company. He supported me and the bands I worked with very well. I did have to send in one pair to be serviced, but it was at no cost and expidited for quick return.
      Don't get me wrong...I love your channel and value your opinions...

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  6 лет назад +1

      Lol, bro, this is just a discussion. It's why I love this channel and community...because we can discuss things without it turning in to a troll fest.

    • @ajswanson
      @ajswanson 6 лет назад +3

      True! There are really only two companies who make a proprietary driver. And often, they are "magged up" which gives a better performance at the expense of durability. Sonion and Knowles are really the only two suppliers of balanced armature drivers, but they are not just hearing aid drivers. They are designed for audio applications. Its the same as a guitar amp company using a Celestion speaker. They are "off the shelf" but that doesn't mean they are not designed for guitar and incredibly good.
      And regarding the company that uses the same driver, there is a particular dual driver combination driver that a number of companies use. Its is designed for audio and sounds absolutely killer. The point I was making is that we are committed to keeping pricing low, even though we use the same drivers as 80% of the companies making in-ears.
