I was a roofer for 15 years so I have used something similar for ladders on hillsides and stairs. One thing I would add to your design is a lip or a bracket that would stop the feet from sliding. Also if you are going to use this outside without a wall to stop it from moving I would add something to anchor it to the ground. The higher up you climb the more the ladder will want to slide.
good points, thanks for that. i have done a few roofs, that is a hard job.
epic
Yeah, while I watched I was nervous about the feet slipping
I have a simple solution to that ( if carpet only): drill 2-3 sturdy screws through the horizontal board and let them poke or bottom about 1/4 inch. It'll provide a slip grip.
Great improvement points for safety. Thank you
Just built this ladder stairwell hack. assembled in one hour and all for under $20. Thanks for inventing this and saving me over $75. Gerry
Thank you for this! Made myself one today ready for sanding and painting my hallway ceiling.
I made a similar step when decorating a hallway. For added security, I screwed it to the staircase stringer and like some other comments put a lip on the downhill side to prevent lateral slippage, rock solid.
great video! i dont have any carpentry or wood working skills but i managed to build one of my own wood platforms, and put the ladder on top of it to reach a light fixture in the hallway. the key is to put the platform on the opposite side of the wall that you plan on climbing. really appreciate you posting this video
Wow, you are the MAN! Thank you, have a tough stairwell to deal with for painting. Tony in Oregon 2020
Painting the stairwell on my basement that I just finished myself. Was going to buy a special ladder today with an extendable leg. Nope! Built your hack in 30min and now I'm golden. Saved $150. Thank-you!
Fantastic! Thank you. Made mine yesterday and worked a treat today! 👍🏼👍🏼
Great, simple, and easy to make solution. I just bought a triple ladder with a "stair function" (ie. it can fold out into an offset A frame shape), to paint our stairwell. it doesn't get me anywhere near high enough; and it's incredibly dangerous too! I'm taking it back to the shop; and I'm going to make one of these instead! Thanks so much.
😂
Saw this idea and copied it, it works a treat! Thank you.
Thanks man!!! Saved me about $120, I had some huge pieces of wood around the house, so made this for free instead of driving to the store which is far away. thanks again.
Simple, effective. ...downright brilliant!
I've been needing to change a side wall mounted light for years but didn't know a safe way to do it. Thanks! 👍
A lip around the top edge would hold the legs of the ladder in pretty good don't you think.
Genius! This is the answer! Thank you( my wife says) for saving me from falling!
I just used this tip yesterday. Worked perfectly. Thanks for sharing
Great stuff , I was sitting down hands on my head wondering how to get the ladder in position , My idea was to use bricks or concrete blocks but decided it was not so good . Then I searched about as you do and found your video. I've just made the step ready to try out tomorrow.
Thanks and like all the others will be careful.
Ha! Grabbing the tape was a quality production move. Thanks for the help
I wish my parents knew this 20 years ago when they moved in. They could have hired somebody to make this, and they could have been using this for the past 20 years!!
For those doing this for a light bulb, use an LED.
nice way to do this, getting ready to do the same, paint stairway ceiling and walls. this will help, thanks
Thank you, I needed this. I'm going to add a lip on the back and a lip on the side to prevent the ladder from sliding off either direction.
found this video very informative and useful
I'm amazed manufacturers dont have sliding at the bottom of each end of the ladder that can be adjusted singly for stairs heights
Little giant does have this feature
You solved my problem in three seconds flat, thank you
Genius, making one of these today. Extremely helpful.
Nice, easy solution to a number of short-person problems. I had to laugh: I used to have a high-ceilinged house; whenever I finished painting there was always that one forgotten piece of masking tape well beyond my short-person reach..
Very nice. I have a deep stairwell going into my basement. Hard to paint and clean at the top. This will definitely help me out. Thanks!
not sure why i hadn't thought of this before, but it works well. thx!
I always wondered how to paint over a staircase. Watching this video was very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing !!
Loved it! Loved watching the dogs just glide thru the water!! They are so beautiful!
It's a good idea but instead of measuring down underneath the ladder is it more simple to put a spirit level on the stair tread get it level and then measure down. The ladder will be level without looking at your tape and measuring
I've found d it extremely difficult to find something like this in the UK. I do all my own diy. I don't have wood or ply wood to make this so I'll have to find items around the home to put on the step and see if they'll work.
you do painting regular? more ladder tips are welcome . for example how to tackle exterior high up corbels on front of house ? one middle easy other two extreme left/right how to reach for scrape/paint.
Hire a long ladder and get someone to hold the bottom. Also, make sure you don’t suffer from vertigo. Alternatively, get some scaffolding erected or hire a mini tower, if you are not tight for💰
I want to put a clock on my wall high up on the stairs and couldn’t figure out how. Thank you so much
Thanks dude
Thanks for the tip.I need to reinstall my smoke alarm but was concerned about going ass over tea kettle by overreaching beyond the handrail...
I'm go''in, cover me...
Add some grip tread too
Your video helped me a lot. I was only changing a smoke alarm.
Stairway to heaven
great idea will do this
Perfect timing, I need to paint our entry way and we have some tricky stairs - nice end card btw
the top stair is always a pain, this makes it a bit easier.
Nice saved a lot of money these tools are so expensive
Thanks 👍 for the video I really appreciate it 😊 I'm a painter and I need one for sure, god bless you 🙏🙏🙏👍
fantastic idea simple and effective enjoyed the video
Nice rig, and nice dogs.
Thanks man, simple yet effective idea
Thanks appreciate the idea, will be making one
You saved me a good 150 ! Thank you my brother
What about the wall opposite the stairs? Ours is tall and you'd be pretty high sideways using this method. Can I send you a picture and you give me some advice after seeing my problem?
Thank you sir. Your wisdom is required.
That's pretty groovy. I like it.
yeah, it works for me. thx!
Nice and simple, now I don't have to go out and buy a ladder leveler. Thanks!
Thanks for showing this
Thanks 4 solving my problem. U R a genious @ work
Good thinking and good job!
All fine and dandy, but if you're on stairs with no wall to lean a ladder against what do you do?
Holy smokes, Thanks for this video,...for old coots like myself that don't have $50 bucks or more to spend for a step stand that would hardly get used.. hoot, hoot, I got all the wood needed for this, *SCORE*...
Very helpful! Thank you!
wow thank you so much for your diy looking forward to more hacks for repairs
very useful thank you. lovely dogs
be good to put up piece of angle iron along the side to keep the ladder from sliding sideways too. thx!
Very helpful thank you GardenFork! I have a spiral staircase that's a bear, this'll come in real handy!
Fantastic. Thank you for sharing
Genius- thank you
Thank you. We made a platform and it worked great. Picture is hung.
Thank You for this video, it worked for me
Awesome
Thanks for sharing the experience!I appreciate it :)!Love DIY videos!Good job!
good thinking. I recall my Father use to stack up some old WW1 encyclopedia volumes; look dangerous but worked.
yeah, this makes it more steady!
That's when men were men and explains why women live longer than men...
That's why all the older men we knew when we were growing up had limps.
My husband used phone books! Which brought me to this video… 😯 thank you!
Thank for the info!!
Cool making one for for my hall.. 😁😎👍
Nice 👍
cool idea bro thanks
i use a paint can ... don't do what i do.. smart idea i have done something similiar nice job
Please don't ever use a paint can my friends...it is waiting to slide and or flip. Peace
at 38 seconds did you really think someone would think to position a ladder like that on the stairs and think it would work? hahaha
someone needs to invent a ladder with retractable legs for instances like this
great tip
makes painting easier! eric.
Clever
10Q from México
Why not just get some adjustable feet. I use extend-a leg.
Hmmm??!!!! I really don't like those drywall screws for structural stuff as they are too brittle and will snap under load. Us wood screws and glue for that stair extension and apply a non-slip surface like a scrap of carper glued to the top and rubber feet on the bottom so that it does not slip on the stairs.
Gonna save me from having to buy one of those fancy adjustable ladders 👍
dooohh why didn't I think of that ; thank you.
Gotta trust a guy with yellow labs!!
Cool idea but be careful. Thanks Greg.
yes, always have to be careful when you are up on a ladder. thx!
Nice! And BTW, nice wood work on your stairs
thx, 120 yr old row house
+GardenFork Nice! Our 120 ish year old farmhouse with NONE of the original woodwork. Old owners thought fake paneling and thin trim was better :(
yeah, i've seen that. and removed a lot of 1970s paneling and skim coated over the glue.
+GardenFork lol, that is EXACTLY how I handled it!
cute dogs
Put a rubber shoe on that base to prevent slipping
great tip thanks
good to hear, this has helped me when painting stairs. thx!
Great tip! (But how do you throw the ball?) ;-)
the pups disappear when its time to paint!
A crack in the main board and you are screwed Dude.
Not hating, I would suggest using thick planks of 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12 boards, then use thicker deck screws or 12d or 16d nails. Your angle brace needs to be thicker as well. Half inch or 5/8 plywood. No particle board. Then you could paint the finished product and add some sand into the paint for traction control. I say all of this because everything I build, I have to bullet proof for the idiots/moron employees. They can tear up steel ball bearings!
Must be a big boy..
wouldn't other wood types be more sturdy than pine? yikes. Be safe
+Ryan Betker I think it's up to the maker. For me, the pine was sufficient, but if it's a heavy load, one might consider upgrading thx!
man make me one and i'll buy it...
There is something similar made out of metal, in Walmart, for $120
buy a Pivit jack so you can sue somebody if you get hurt:)
That still scares me but I’m afraid of heights and I’m 75 years old woman with arthritis so I’m afraid to try that.
Dip into your pension money and employ a professional decorator….. 👌
ladder aid pro duh
I think I'd buy the proper ladder or use scaffolding
Justin Hicks
Justin - scaffolding on a staircase ???
Think you better hire it done so you have a long life. You are not qualified by any means.
Bryan Wilson I am qualified. I work construction and have an OSHA 30 & Arsc card. Scaffolding is much safer than this ladder hack.
I'd off screwed that plywood onto the stairs... I trust nothing lol.. Great video
dogbeasts still look good
they are great!
this odd share the thumbsdown count is desperately needed
Wow. Duh. Or you could just spend a $100 + to buy a metal one? Either way thanks for the advice to those who have no brain.
nice wan>>>.......
