    That young lady who works fro you when she is not at uni is absolutely a dear. when you get her to assist on video ie pass you the inserts to promote pregnancy, she try's so hard not to look at the camera, fails and looks up then gets so embarrassed. Adorable. I listen when you give her high praise so it is is obvious you think . very highly of her and how she works with you. I think the idea to color code the sheep by how many babies she is carrying, has really helped lessen the amount of ewes you have to do an internal exam on during lambing. :)

      @jessehachey2732 3 года назад +4

      Not quite - she still checks anyway (and has gotten upset at Jess for not checking in fact, and herself more than once). The idea of shearing when she does isn’t to reduce internal exams - it’s so that the nearly blind newborn lambies have clear access to the teats to nurse, and to keep backsides area more sanitary during labour delivery and finally so their undersides are cleaner for the babies who don’t got an immune system yet and are particularly vulnerable to pathogens like bacteria and viruses that usually get trapped in belly wool etc.

    A friend in Collingwood, her dad was a fast sheep shearer and would win first place at the Royal Winter Fair every year, and everyone got fed up with him always winning ~ so they made him a judge! Problem solved. We got to see him shear a couple of lambs and he explained you can either shear up and down, like Charlie obviously does, or you can shear in a round about fashion. Back breaking work outside being a farrier. Terrific work. Well done. 🙂

I'm a 35 yr old previous farm girl in Alberta and I've been thinking of going back home to the farm to take over/start a cattle operation on my dad's old homestead for the last 2 years. I'm getting lots of ideas from your channel and definitely want to treat the cattle operation like a business! Hoping that my partner and I can take that leap in the coming year. I was really impressed to see that there weren't a FLOOD of comments of people screaming about 'he's being so rough with them!' I've watched a lot of shearing videos and have never personally done it, and it is a very labor-intensive profession that requires a lot of skill to keep the wool and the sheep safe and controlled. Well done! Happy naked mamas!

    Seeing Billie’s mom again got me wondering, are sheep colorings classified similarly to those used on horses (or other domesticated hoofed animals)? In the horse world, Billie’s mom would be close to a Blue Roan. Black base coat with white hairs sprinkled throughout the body but still maintain the black coat on the head and “points”. Very beautiful. She needs a name at one point.

    • @Dan.Whiteford

      In all honesty the firmness of handling the sheep is an experience thing - too soft and slow and it is almost like tickling them and they sense they can get away if they jump, squirm and struggle enough.
      Too much and it can be almost brutal and can result in injuries to the animal and person, about right and they realize they cannot escape and basically give in to being sheared. If they start to struggle then applying extra pressure to their bodies at the correct location / place temporarily they often give up and lie there pretty quietly.
      It is also worth noting that the sheep's size, breed and age will also have an influence as well how used they are to being handled and worked with in close quarters. Small mountain breeds are the most awkward and least compliant whereas larger Downland breeds are easier.

    Sandi, if you want to adjust the headers, you can always contact the software developer and tell them what you need. Most are happy to help with that.
    Also, you can export to an online spreadsheet and it will unlock it for you, then you can adjust it and download it back to your file system. Or at least that's what I do when I can't figure out a work around. Hope that helps!
